It's a waste of time. The GOP cares more about NRA money than dead children in schools.

Before you Trumpophiles start putting forward the argument that Chicago demonstrates gun control laws don't work, remember that Chicago is not an island. Once you acknowledge that small point, have a look at firearm violence in Hawaii.

Background checks aren't even close to being enough.

Start with an outright ban on the sales of semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines, and make their possession a felony.

Make the gun owners pay user fees on their purchases of guns and ammo. Earmark the money to cover the billions non-gun owners pay in taxes for governments at all levels to deal with the problems gun owners create.

Trump's 'ban' on bump stocks has led to at least one man being arrested for possessing one, among other weapons. And yes, he was judged to be mentally unsound. Mental illness and gun ownership once again linked.

Have the JT posters who've crowed about owning bump stocks followed your president's ban?

But Chicago!

But Hawaii.

Stronger Red Flag and mandatory trigger locks while they are at it.

Given the number of guns stolen from 'law abiding citizens', plus the number stolen from gun stores (Google/Yandex yourself), something needs to be done to make it more difficult for guns to be taken from both. Think about gun owners with multiple residences, for example someone who lives in Japan part of the year but has numerous guns at their places in Texas and California. It would be nearly impossible for them to completely ensure they can't be stolen. Because they can't ensure that, they end up putting the general population at even greater risk because of their gun fetishes.

If you have multiple firearms, a gun safe is a good investment.

Have a friend where they poured concrete to set the safe in place. It is sized about like a deep freezer that people have for sorting game kills and fish 6+ months. If the combination isn't known, getting into a safe like that is hours and hours with a very hot torch. This friend's home was burgularized, but because he has a federal firearms permit, the police came by immediately when called to verify no firearms were missing. The thieves were disappointed - they only got 10+ yr old TVs and VCRs. They did leave a mess looking for hidden cash in the flour and sugar jars. ;(

If you are unwilling to store your firearms securely, then it is best not to have any, if you live in a city. For people that live in remote locations at the end of 2 mile long private roads, a trigger lock would be sufficient and allow quick action when a dangerous animal wants to eat your kid or pets.

Have a friend

Good on your friend. I imagine there are many others like him who take full responsibility for their weapons. But there are dozens of millions of gun owners, and among them I have to think there are many more who don't take those precautions. The guns stolen numbers bear that out.

McConnell is damaged goods. Obama's election win broke him

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump's "urgent, personal intervention is needed to stem the endless massacres of our fellow Americans by gunfire."

Come on Nancy and Chuck - you do realize the President is involved in much more important matters than the needless slaughter of innocent Americans...

He's having a Twitter fight with John Legend and his wife...

The second amendment of guns ownership has outdated, why people don't get this! Or they don't want to get this!?

Oh, yeah, that'll stop the sales and purchases....lol

Yeah and neither politician will touch it with a ten foot pole.

Trump's 'ban' on bump stocks has led to at least one man being arrested for possessing one, among other weapons. And yes, he was judged to be mentally unsound. Mental illness and gun ownership once again linked.

I do agree both sides should come together on this, but as long as Democrats demand to ban certain guns outright the GOP will be continue to dig in their heels and as long as the Democrats dig in their heels to address the mental instability of mass shooters, the gun debate will never move forward, never.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

@bas4fs long as the Democrats dig in their heels to address the mental instability of mass shooters, t

What? Link to a specific example to show when that happened.

I do agree both sides should come together on this

Honest up: if you want them to come together, you want them to do nothing. You've repeatedly written you want no changes. Have you turned in your bump stock like your president asked you - and other TexAggies - to do?

I do agree both sides should come together on this

The 'Pubs idea of 'coming together' is that the Democrats do whatever the 'Pubs tell them to.

See how they dealt with the Democrats trying to come together with them on Obamacare for an example. They torpedoed it, then criticized it for being the weak system they caused it to be.

The 'pubs have not shown that they have any ability nor intention whatsoever to come together with Democrats. Look at Moscow Mitch - he just simply refuses to even debate any legislation that the extremists don't like if it's bipartisan. Which exposed them when they refused to even debate bipartisan immigration bills during the Obama administration. Then they try to tell us they aren't the open-borders party.

What a joke.

Honest up: if you want them to come together, you want them to do nothing.

No, because I know full well Democrats won’t address the issue of mental disease, they just won’t. So if the Dems think the GOP are going to meet them head on if that’s the case, forget it.

You've repeatedly written you want no changes.

I want changes as long as it doesn’t involve taking away my rights or fiddling with the 2nd amendment.

Have you turned in your bump stock like your president asked you - and other TexAggies - to do?

What!

Can you point to some examples?

An opinion poll about the cause of shootings? I thought we were talking about legislation. The Dems aren't stopping any Repub legislation because there is none. An opinion poll doesn't change that.

Besides, Obamacare gave millions more access to mental care and you want to take that away. You are working in the opposite direction.

And let's not forget that Republicans stopped the CDC from researching gun violence as a health crisis issue because they didn't like the negative statistics that were coming out.

And let's not forget that Republicans passed legislation banning doctors from asking patients if there is a gun in the house.

They can say they think it's a mental health issue, but they can't say they support mental health initiatives

3 ( +3 / -0 )

There are a very wide range of mental disorders but not all would lead someone to commit a mass shooting.

Never said that, but we can’t ignore that that it does indeed play a huge part predominantly, how do I know this? Any sane, normal and compassionate human being would never purposely kill people indiscriminately, there is no way on God’s green Earth. The thought never crossed my mind and even if it did, I wouldn’t act on it. I could never live with the guilt knowing I killed dozens and I don’t want to die whether it’s by my hand or the hands of the police. I never had random thoughts as to what it would be like killing innocent people because I know my life would be shortened and one day I will have a needle in my arm. Same people always think about the repercussions, mentally disturbed people do not.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Hang on, some say the problem is not guns but mental health and the same people don’t support mental health initiatives.

I’d type ROFL but these people are going to get more people killed.

Depends, in mass shootings, it’s obvious what the reason is. More than a few screws loss.

Detailed diagnosis.

What would you do about mental health and where would the money come from?

Trump is already bankrupting the country with his out of control socialist spending.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Not really, consumer spending is up

That’s just temporary and could change very quickly. You write in the financial section of the Washington Post and must know this.

Trump’s out of control socialist spending is piling on more debt.

Fiscal conservatives see a problem with this.
