I was stationed there in the mid 1980s. It was bubbaville back then. I had to ask the father of a young lady I was dating to not use the N word around me. I find it unacceptable. The dude was flabbergasted, no one ever told him to do or not do anything. But he stopped using that word around me. Certain towns in the region had unwritten rules for African Americans not to be out after dark. There were people standing on the medians of major streets with bull horns screaming at us to repent. It was torture waiting for the light to change so you could get away from the noise. Everyone was constantly asking me "when are you coming to our church"? Constant pressure to go to this or that church. I was brought that asking such questions are very bad manners. Not in Florida. I would go just to quiet them but most of what I saw was phony. Pray to god Sunday morning and sin like no tomorrow the rest of the week. Coming from the west coast it was like an alternate, parallel universe. I don't think Mr. DeSantis ideology is going to go over well in the northeast or west.

Most of the "traditional values" I was brought up with I utterly reject and would not want passed on to future generations. We were taught that if god wanted whites to marry other races then god would not have separated the races on different continents.

The whole thing about homosexuality in the bible neglects what the bible was criticizing, and that was Greek temple practice of having young boys available for older men. It had nothing to do with gay marriage, and in any event the science all says sexual orientation is genetic and not a choice. I have known too many gays who tried to deny their true self and suffered mental anguish from it. Society expects you to be what you aren't and punishes you harshly for being yourself. That is wrong and must stop. Going to all those fundamentalist churches in the south I came away understanding they were nothing but hypocrites.

I enraged a room full of my peers once when, during a halftime they channel surfed and stopped Jerry Falwell. I told them to turn the volume off and look at the body language. He's a use car salesman like you see on late night TV, only wearing thousand dollar suits paid for by the donations from him preying on people's fear of the afterlife. I told them he was a charlatan. Just like Ron DeSantis. He is insincere, saying what he does for his own personal gain just like those TV preachers and too often the preacher of the local churches. Liars and charlatans, but these fools hang on their every word convinced it is somehow the word of god.

That kind of uncritical thinking and vulnerability to being taken is not what I want kids to learn. Kids need to read James Madison and John Adams for starters, read their critiques of government and of organized religion. Neither had anything nice to say about christianity and some of their writings and speeches would be labeled as hate speech today. Kids need to learn the truth about US history, including and especially the uncomfortable parts. Every German kid is taught about the Holocaust and the horrors committed by the Nazis. Don't tell me American kids can't understand the horrors of slavery, the reasons for the Civil War or that Rosa Parks had to sit at the back of the bus because her skin was black. That has to be taught, every ugly detail of it.

You must have been further south. I was stationed in the Panhandle, aka "Florabama". It was backwoods, the kind of place that thought the movie "Deliverance" was a comedy. Even back then the bubbas were shooting and killing abortion doctors. Heck, the local Catholic and Lutheran churches were bombed too. If you weren't Baptist or Pentacostle you kept your head down.

I worked in Charleston right after Hurricane Hugo furiously logging the fallen trees before they could "blue", grow mold and be unmarketable. There were all these "private social clubs" in town instead of normal night clubs. They were all racially segregated. However if I went to a white "private social club", after the doorman asked me if I was a cop or not and signed something attesting to this fact ( ! ) they would enter my name as somebody's guest and in I would go. If however an African American came to the door of the very same club they would be turned away "sorry this club is for members only". And then there were people smoking in the grocery store and stomping the butt out on the floor. Enough to make you wretch. That is another place that is bigoted and backwards.

I visited my parents every year since 1970 until they died in 2017. Sometimes to Florida or sometimes to their log cabin in the Appalachian Mountains. Before that, they lived in a private golf club in Fairlawn NJ. Nice place too.
