Radio active materials does not need the permission or visa to travel to oversea. If the exposed reactor core is fully meltdown, it is very possible to spread out to others. Prevention is better than cure. Whether the outcome is happy ending or nightmare, Some nations or family with kids have to take extra precaution for their safety. It is fair enough.

The root cause of panic for nuclear reactor crisis was lack of transparency and downgrading the potential risks by bureaucrats.

If Japan call US nuclear experts earlier, things will be better. US is more conservative about safety than Japan. For example, safety distance from nuclear power plant. Japan limit is 30 KM. US limit is 80 KM.

Now the workers are risking their life for averting the full meltdown. They are modern days Samurai with sacrifice. If the media concern about the safety of people, they have to be more transparent.

The radioactive fallout will be going in Tokyo's direction this weekend. These radioactive particles are dangerous and you don't want to breath them in. Much more dangerous than background radiation.

The root cause for panic is a fundamental lack of science knowledge and fear of anything with the word "nuclear".

If there are no even slightly dangerous levels of radiation in Tochigi 1 week on, why would there be dangerous levels in Tokyo, much much further away?

Smorkian,

"If there are no even slightly dangerous levels of radiation in Tochigi 1 week on, why would there be dangerous levels in Tokyo, much much further away?" Maybe because the wind has been blowing out ot sea this week away from Tochigi, according the the JMA website. However this weekend the wind is blowing towards Tokyo.

adam, wind is irrelevant. Distance is.

"wind is irrelevant"

No it isn't. I'm not surprised, however, that there is no health risk to the west coast of the U.S., thousands of kilometers away. Tokyo, on the other hand, is a mere 280km away. The U.S. government has urged people within 80km to evacuate, and this is before any meltdown...

Unfortunately - fewer and fewer people believe in the US government rhetoric - especially after the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" debacle.

There is a disconnect in the message of those who hail the sacrifice of the "Fukushima 50" for their efforts to save Eastern Japan and their simulataneous insistence that the nuclear issue is being blown out of proportion by the "Western media". Are the F-50 dying for nothing?

I believe that how far away you get from the reactors depends on your faith in the truthfulness of your government. And, in the long run, the truth will come out. So it pays your government to be truthful with you.
