damn how could this happen?

what a mess... this virtually should not happen with such a super-computerised ship. More and more I start believing the captain's story that the maps were wrong...

He was arrested already. Old news.

Surely the ship is pointing the wrong way?

The maps show its regualr course to be east of the island, so heading north from Rome the island should be on the left with the bow pointing the other way.

Did the ship turn round in a circle, trying to make this little harbor/harbour?

I saw many other pictures taken from the air at daylight. The captain commanded or allowed the ship to pass by the rocky shore virtually just a few meters, at very high speed. Mystery how it could happen, not even an amateur would approach huge rocks and the rocky seabed so close.

Maritime vessels now use maritime GPS with the maps detailing the depths and coastal landmarks rather than roads. Assuming they entered the ship's maximum draft into the GPS, there should have never been a way they could hit a reef and not know they were in the wrong place.

@zichi Agree but these ships have eco sounders depth and collision radar etc, so all the instruments and warning systems must have been off or other wise no-one was on watch

Just read an article in the Telegraph that there was a tradition for these big ships to sail as close to the shore as possible and sound the foghorn, to please tourists on the island.

This time though, say the islanders, the ship came far too close. Some talk of one of the crew wanting to shout and establish human voice contact with a friend on shore. (?)

What the Korean couple did would be the same scenario as if it had been a Japanese couple. Their unawareness of what to do outside of their cocoon like life lives in Korea or as I mentioned if they were a Japanese couple would have been the same. Most Japanese and Koreans don't have the experience to deal with these types of events as do most foreigners who would say "lets get the hell out of here" and see what is going on. I am not saying what they did is wrong but if presented with a serious problem, you need to depend on yourselves and not go into a cocoon and call for help.

Genoa-based Costa Crociere is Europe’s biggest cruise operator, with a turnover of 2.9 billion euros ($3.7 billion) in 2010.

Colombian crewman Edgard Lopez Sanchez told AFP: “We saved between 500 and 600 people. I made a dozen trips with the lifeboat, it was cold and windy.”

We are the heroes—the Colombians, the Hondurans, the Chinese, the crew made up of 20 nationalities,” he said.

These big cruise ship companies have Columbians and Chinese manning their ships? All the Europeans care about is profits.

I've been following this story all day. The stories I've read sound crazy. Worst than the real Titanic. So funny to hear the Captain was one of the first off the ship.

Captain: "I ain't going down with the ship" " You watch too many movies" "I'll see you on the beach".

Only positive thing is I'm glad they ignored the women and children first rule. Children should be first and after that let it be each man for himself.

What do you have against Columbians and Chinese manning ships?
