Trump will negotiate a trade deal with India that benefits both countries ad reduces the trade deficit with India.

Nah, he's not very good at this stuff.

Trump will negotiate a trade deal with India that benefits the Trump family and increases the trade deficit with India.

"Mr. Trump has given a tremendous speech and blah, blah, blah . . . "

Nope. Just more of the same BS.

Our local commentators must be bewildered.

Not at all. The rally is tiny, when you take into account India's population of over 1 billion. And as pointed out, even this crowd weren't really into the blundering comedy figure of fun:

Barely five minutes into US President’s Donald Trump’s speech, the restless crowd at the Motera cricket stadium started to vacate their seats. By the time Trump finished, almost half of the stadium was empty. Senior police officers estimated that at least 85,000 to 90,000 people had assembled at the stadium and half of them left before the event ended.

he struggled to pronounce several Indian words - from Ahmedabad, the city where he was speaking, to Swami Vivekananda, an Indian philosopher, greatly admired by Mr Modi. He also called the Vedas - ancient Hindu texts - "Vestas". He ended his speech by saying: "God bless India, God bless the United States of America - we love you, we love you very much." He spoke after Mr Modi, and crowds began leaving mid-way through the US president's speech.

The speech at the Motera stadium wasn't as magical as the above report suggests. Audience bemusement at his inability to pronounce place names and people turned to boredom as thousands left the grounds.

The media were distracted too, as violence in New Delhi flared again.

And of course, Modi couldn't allow the stark reality of the poor to intrude, so he walled them off from Trump.

Still, at least the two demagogues can have a natter about immigrants and Muslims, eh.

Well, maybe he'll move some of his clothing line to Indian sweatshop factories from the current Chinese ones...

Indian-made Trump tie anyone?

"Mr Trump has given a tremendous speech and it's really touched our minds and hearts, and I am sure he has spoken with honesty and integrity," said Shrilak Shah, one of the spectators.

As he read from an index card and stuffed the 10 rupees in his pocket...

Toasted Heretic

So what number of people would you like to turn out to call it big, if 100000 is not enough?

And, by that standard, has there ever been a big rally anywhere??

Trump arrived on Monday and hailed India and its "tremendously successful" but "very tough" Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rowdy rally of 100,000 at the world's largest cricket stadium.

Our local commentators must be bewildered.

Yep.
