I guess it would just kill the so called journalist to tell us what was actually said.

It said "rehearsal is for fags". Why they hired Eddie in the first place is beyond me. Hollywood has a short memory of his horrific behaviour.

I don't think it is so much that Ratner was fired as it was widely anticipated Murphy would be an outright bomb (he himself said he would do a bad job). This way no one will ever know, and Ratner leaving gave him the perfect out.

Award shows are gay. Gay not in a homesexual way, but in a wussy way. Let's not call in the Vocab-police on every little account. File this story under "So What".

LoL!! Phrase of the day

The kids around here use "gay" to mean anything they don't like. When I ask them why they hate gays so much, they stare at me like I've grown a second head, then try to explain it away just like jforce did. "It's not about hating homos, it's about hating something being GAY!" Usually that's about the time I stop trying to hit them over the head with the "obvious" hammer and give up. They'll never get it even if you spoon-feed it to them syllable by syllable.

Ratner wasn't fried!!

While Ratner should have been much more careful if he cared about public opinion, the word has taken on the meaning in English that Fadamor and jforce described. Meaning and usage change. That is why while some might think Ratner's use of the word was 'sick' (demented), others might think it is 'sick' (cool). While he was insensitive to the possible affront. He obviously did not mean to imply anything to do with homosexual people. He apologized. A new producer has been found. I still won't watch it anyway.

The irony of someone complaining about other people expropriating a word that was already expropriated...

Ben,

He said "fag", not "gay". "Fag" is a serious slur that is often used with malice in the US. It's a big, big deal. It's the word gay men often hear as they are being beaten to death to by people that hate them for being different. It's a word that drives people to suicide.

You're right, meaning and usage change, and history dictates that sometimes we discontinue usage of what once were fairly innocuous words because they have taken on hateful and malicious meanings.

It's interesting that very few people ever complain that we've all gone too "PC" these days if a white guy uses the term "ni***er" (which ironically, I am forbidden from posting as is), but every time someone gets in hot water for using the word "fag", it's always, "those gays are just too damn sensitive! Get over it!"

Human Target,

Thank you for pointing that out. The article did not mention and I did not noticed it. I guess I would be correct in assuming Ratner was not saying rehearsals are the time for a smoke. I understand your point about the seriousness of the word you described in the American lexicon. Thank you for pointing it out and the irony that the other word you described cannot be said. However that is probably because the word Ratner used has an innoxious meaning.

as well.

Using the word "gay" to insult or belittle someone or something is asshatish -- not in a, "I wear a donkey on my head" way, but in a, "Hey, everyone. I'm a bit of a jerk" way. Not a whole lot unlike some loudmouth thinking it would be funny or cool to claim, "rehearsals are for fags."

Murphy may be selling himself short. Maybe going on with the show sans his jerk-of-a-partner might have resulted in something entertaining from a man who desperately needs to reinvent himself.

Why the heck did I get thumbs down for reporting what was said? Get a grip people!

While I'm not 3 reallys worth, I wanted to see Eddie host too.

An interesting conversation came up about Eddie Murphy a few months ago on ESPN. He's the only Murphy you can think of that doesn't go by "Murph."
