Tragic - though, if you climb a volcano, you've gotta expect the worst. I climbed Sakurajima and was lucky to have exited alive.

Get on a ferry in Tokyo and go to Isu Oshima. You can climb the volcano and the Onsen are fantastic.

The Ontakesan tragedy that left 58 victims made me think more carefully about my options for the weekend, Japan is 73% mountains, I'm not sure if I will want to climb a ticking bomb with my family ever again... just because it hasnt erupted in 100s of years it means it won't happen in the many hours you will be spending there.

It's the thrill of adventure that people find in mountain climbing that makes them want to do it. But for active volcanoes? That's pretty reckless. This isn't the first time people have been killed climbing volcanoes. It is a senseless thing to do.

You think so? Thousands of climbers climb Mount Fuji every year; are they being senseless?
