Just got back from Beijing.. what an unpleasant place to be.. we have to make sure the rest of Asia doesn't end up like that.

I had organized a VPN before I went but some colleagues couldn't believe how restricted information is there..

Leader for life, control the information, apparently the whole government control of TV is going to change to be even more strict.. its a scary prospect.

Sounds really insecure.

For decades the world has heard from Beijing about a peaceful rise. Basically the era of looking outward to the world by Beijing has passed. We’re now seeing the beginning of a new China. Will have of course influence but won’t win admiration in eliminating dissonant voices & free speech. A rocky road.

Socialism is still touted as a legitimate ideology despite the fact that more have died in the name of socialism than any other ideology in history.

Canada, Norway, Sweden etc. All better countries than the USA, all socialist.

Xi is a communist

No, China is not communist.

They called themselves socialist.

Kind of like how the Democratic People's Republic of Korea call themselves Democratic? Do you believe them too?

Toasted: The revisionism taking place on this thread regarding the nazis is not only astonishing but dangerous.

The Nazi’s are gone and are no threat to anyone. Socialism is still touted as a legitimate ideology despite the fact that more have died in the name of socialism than any other ideology in history. Today, it is international socialism that is what is dangerous. Xi is a communist which means he supports international socialism. He is clearly thinking in terms of expansion and expanding Chinese influence particularly in the third world. When a communist with nuclear weapons starts talking about “blood” others would be wise to listen and prepare appropriately.

The nazis were ideologically opposed to the socialists and communists - they did not embrace socialism.

That is plainly a false statement. They called themselves socialist. Do you not know what Nazi means? The socialists/communists in Germany at the time were allied with like minded groups outside of Germany. The Nazi’s opposed outside interference in German politics. They were national socialists- exactly as their name stated they were. Denying the obvious just because you think any association between fascism (national socialism) and (international) socialism reflects badly on the socialist brand does not change reality.

First off, if Xi is going to rule for life, I hope that from now on he take a valium before he speaks in public. The very last thing China needs (and we need) is a war. A war would wreck China's budding capitalist economy.

Yes, capitalist.

There a Communist Party and when ever they come together they sing the "International." The Chinese flag is red and sports the hammer and sickle. Xi says China has socialism. But in fact China has a capitalist economy that exploits workers and is overseen and protected by a totalitarian state that will not "whither away" (Lenin) or "die out" (Engels). In fact, it is the perfect fascist state: the melding of corporate and state power into a totalitarian entity.

Xi was clever to use "socialism" and not "communism" in his speech. According to Lenin (but not Marx or Engels) "socialism" is the lower stage of "communism" which will come into being when people are able to contribute according their abilities and take according to their needs. (This is a paraphrase of a marginal note in the Gotha Program in which Marx quotes from Acts 5 in the New Testament.) The reason Xi was clever, Stalinistically clever, is because the unsaid but practiced presumption of the Chinese state is that until "communism" comes they can do as they wish under "socialism," which is an ipso fact impure version of the ideal.

No, there is not socialism in China. And there never will be. If there ever was a quivering presence of socialism in China it died when the last barefoot doctor put on his shoes, moved the city and bought a BMW.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

When I stated above about "communication", the saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword", also is relevant here. And, that is the most important part of China's strategic plan to take over the world. They want to control the "pen" which in essence means "information". It is the availability and the use of information that is more powerful than the use of weapons and violence.

It is not knowledge or education or even skill that assures "life". It is having the awareness and access to factual, correct, meaningful, useful, usable and pertinent information that can be used physically, appropriately and properly with the right skills for the right purpose and goals that makes the difference.  It is the availability, dissemination and the use of information that affects and causes people to take action. That has been the basis of all “revolutions” and “physical change” all thought history.

Interestingly it is the “control” and “manipulation” of information; its source, its contents, its availability, its dissemination and its uses, that have allowed people to gain power and wealth as well as ways to counteract the “misuse” of such power and wealth. The copyright and patent system is but a few ways in which information is controlled allowing protection as well as manipulation and misuse. China has never conformed to any form of such control other than for their own only.

China is starting a new internet which they "control". That definitely can and will control "communication" including "hacking" power. The internet is the most powerful tool that can control and manipulate information from its source to the contents and its dissemination as well as its usage by manipulating information that shows how, when, where any information can be meaningfully used.

To make that physical, they must control the physical aspects. They have already started.

China wants to use their "currency" and their counterpart to the IMF and the banks to control the world finances.

China militarized the S China Sea and their navy escorts their commercial ships around the Northern route above Russia. China is "mapping" the undersea resources along S China Sea, the Pacific, Japan Sea and even the North pole area while controlling the sea transportation routes. They even control the ports along the path that connect Asia to Europe from S China Sea and Indian Ocean through the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

China in the name of the new Silk Road is building in the name of economic aid, massive rail systems that connects Peking to Europe. That assure control of both land and sea routes for commerce.

Such transportation routes can go both ways and for more than one purpose. It can be commercial use or for military use. That definitely can control commerce and thus economies. But worse, it can be used militarily and with Chinese fortifications and China Towns all over the world, they have a massive and powerful network already in place for both overt and covert activities.

So we cannot take XI's statement lightly.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"only socialism can save China". China has lots and lots of billionaires. That is not socialism, no matter how broad the definition.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"regain" means "regain" from what point in time?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tommy Jones - You got me there. Your comprehensive, air-tight rebuttel "nope" is a stroke of genius.

I shall humbly stand down.

When facts and logic fail, try the simple approach.

The U.S needs to put every cent they can spare into the development of hypersonic nuclear missiles. That needs to be their No.1 priority now. There is nothing more important.

Its high time the idea of crowdfunding bunkers became a reality.

Or, perhaps it's time to get away from the conflict mentality. Move beyond the enemy of the week scenario and reach out to our brothers and sisters across the globe.

Xi and all these authoritarian leaders are not the people. They don't care about the people. I believe we must do everything we can to avoid falling into the trap of endless war, cold or otherwise.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Getting back to the subject at hand...

As old saying goes.. "Action speaks louder than Words."

So far China's actions have proven that only military action will stop their overt and covert actions, putting priority to "acquire" land with its human and natural resources and controlling transportation and communication systems and infrastructures throughout the world. In effect they control "people" physically. Ultimately, "power" is gained and maintained by "controlling" people physically, mentally and emotionally, directly and indirectly.

Now they have openly "declared" verbally what their actions were and will be.

So the "intentions" are clear and of no doubt.

What are you suggesting to do about it..?

I for one have only one word for it... "Communicate"... Let all know the obvious threat...

for... what China does will "definitely" affect our future lives...

And... at this time, by the way Xi presented it... it is going to be a dangerous world...

whether we like it or not...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I hope that the US should seriously pay attention to Xi's statements. In case the Thucydides trap could not be avoided, it is from the Southeast Asia Sea that Xi's 'Bloody War' would take place. The US should take on China's expansion sooner than later, as China still need more time to eclipse its counterpart.

The U.S is not going to take on China's activity in S.E Asia directly. The Chinese might have stolen Filipino territory, among others, but they haven't killed opposing forces in the process. The U.S would be seen as the aggressor. They will attempt to boost arms sales to partners and keep onboard their current alliance partners like Japan and push U.S companies to engage more in the region, but the U.S is no position to fight a war against China so close to the Chinese mainland. Given the likely losses, it would make little sense for the U.S to do that. That sort of effort needs to be saved for the defense of America and core allies.

The U.S needs to put every cent they can spare into the development of hypersonic nuclear missiles. That needs to be their No.1 priority now. There is nothing more important. If I was Trump I would direct every U.S arms manufacture to work together to achieve that goal and they need to back it up with billions. They need to make sure their deterrent against any strike on the U.S itself is credible. Right now its not given that Russia have demonstrated the ability to knock out U.S ballistic missile strikes, China probably also.

Its time the individual started planning for their own survival to be honest. The world is headed towards a very nasty new horizon. Its abundantly clear. And we don't know if the MAD doctrine will hold true this time around.

Think passports, think foreign citizenship, think bunkers, think about putting aside enough money to give yourself options if you need to travel quickly. Ultimately though, when you start talking about missiles that can go at 25 times the speed of sound. Can travel 10,000 kilometres in 20 minutes, then really you need to start talking about living your entire life deep underground. Some bloke over at Quora reckons that at 15 feet underground you should be protected from a 100KT blast at 1 mile.

Its high time the idea of crowdfunding bunkers became a reality.

The revisionism taking place on this thread regarding the nazis is not only astonishing but dangerous. ...

Xi's China is a grotesque parody of socialism, just as Trump's America and Putin's Russia are currently parodies of democracy.

Indeed, you have to wonder if certain posters here just don't know anything about socialism or don't know anything about China. In many ways, China has been the ur-example of the kind of state Republicans in the US want: terribly inept or non-existent environmental and public safety regulations, huge wealth gaps between the rich and poor, minimal regulations to protect employees from their employers, a mostly de facto free marketplace where anything can be for sale if you know where to look, a public afraid of protesting the conservative administration, a press that won't speak out against their leaders, the inclusion of racial minorities given lip service but those minorities brutally and collectively oppressed if anyone from their community acts out against the regime... I mean, if the Communist Party of China just dropped the "Communist" from their name and took a little lighter stance on Christianity (no need to lift controls over other religions) and was a little bit needlessly meaner to the LGBT, they would be the ideal Republican government.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The revisionism taking place on this thread regarding the nazis is not only astonishing but dangerous. The nazis were ideologically opposed to the socialists and communists - they did not embrace socialism. They demonised and murdered the left - Jewish and Christian members alike.

Xi's China is a grotesque parody of socialism, just as Trump's America and Putin's Russia are currently parodies of democracy.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Is he trying to become the Chinese Trump? Yuck.

Historically, China made the decision to turn in on itself, and to shun the rest of the world. That was back in the 15th century. In hind sight, it may have been a bad decision. In the 15th century China had the potential to be the foremost world leader.

Socialism requires tyranny in order to force individuals to conform with the “experts” rules for how the people must live.

And yet the best countries in the world are socialist with no tyranny at all.

You Americans sure are weird about 'socialism'. And by that I mean entirely clueless.

Socialism is dead.

Tell that to Canada and the northern Europeans. And Australia. And NZ. And so on.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

”History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China”

He will not get a good grade in history. Socialism is dead.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Toasted: The Nazis despised socialism and communism. They are clearly not one and the same, despite your bizarre claims.

The Nazi’s despised the communists because they were a rival faction of socialists who stood in the way of their goal of gaining power. They didn’t ‘despise socialism’ - they embraced it. They named themselves after it.

Like Xi and present day Communists in China, the German communists of the day were internationally oriented. Hitler and his national socialists were inward oriented. Both believed in collectivism and believed that the rights of individuals should be subsumed in lieu of the greater good - as they saw it. Also like the Progressives in America that shaped their ideas on race, they believed that eugenics could be used by the government to create a better society. The fascist’s were no different from socialists/communists except one was nationalist and the other internationalist subject to various extremes within the overall socialist umbrella.

Xi’s ‘bloody battle’ rhetoric seen in context of Mao’s murderous regime is in keeping with socialism’s tyrannical lineage.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

clemenza: Tiananmen Square IS socialism.

Toasted: Nope, it was tyranny - brutal and murderous tyranny.

Clemenza is correct. Socialism requires tyranny in order to force individuals to conform with the “experts” rules for how the people must live.

Xi and the leaders of socialist parties in other parts of the world, like the American Democrat party, share the same basic ideology and political philosophy. The exception being that Xi is currently operating within a more fully developed socialist system. As socialism develops political pluralism recedes as can be seen in states like California.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Midnight Sun Tribe, as long as Taiwan bundle independence with democracy, Chinese people is going to treat democracy as independence. Abe should be very careful about this because some people in Taiwan still act like traitors in 1930s when Japan occupied Manchuria.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

No surprise. The CCP has ever been a dictatorship. Now it it official and the unlikely Chinese people living in China will continue to suffer and sacrifice for the Tyrant Xi. Ever since Tiananmen, hope has been fading for a just, democratic China. Sad.

Thankfully Taiwan is still a free and independent nation with its own army, allies, and self-respect. And, in Taiwan, they still read Chinese, unlike those unfortunate people raised in China forced by the CCP to learn a weak, infantile version of Chinese writing... Another attempt by the CCP to control and dumb-down the captive population.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

China basically wants the smart people to make decisions.

The US basically wants the foolish masses to think they are making decisions.

Japan basically wants to be distracted from politics by food shows and idols.

Russia basically wants to drink vodka.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

But the most dangerpous thing is his statment that "China has a "rightful" place in the world"...and that he (China) will "fight" to get it.

That is the most "dangerous" statement ever made by any world leader... he has just "declared war" on the rest of world...

Meh, it's another riff on Trump's bellicose rhetoric. Or Putin's new nuclear reveal from a couple of weeks back:

"They have not succeeded in holding Russia back," said Putin, referring to the West, which he said had ignored Moscow in the past, but would now have to sit up and listen.

This is the strongman approach and though tedious and occasionally alarming, it's an old, old game.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

kazetsukai, please read Xi's original speech to understand that you are wrong.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

The subject matter is not Xi as much as what he "represents" that got him the lifetime position, a dictatorship in communist form. His statement that China will "fight" is in itself a "threat" of war to the rest of the world, regardless what other statements he may make.

But the most dangerpous thing is his statment that "China has a "rightful" place in the world"...and that he (China) will "fight" to get it.

That is the most "dangerous" statement ever made by any world leader... he has just "declared war" on the rest of world...

If Trump said "Make America Great Again" that did not threaten the world. Xi's statement "does threaten the world." It apparently was not for political reasons... He no longer has to worry about domestic politics in China... He has all the power he needs for life... He said it for the world to hear...

And that affects all of us. Why is everyone taking it so lightly..?

It is bigger than Abe's domestic problems or even N Korea's threats...

China is talking "global"... and they have started to build the "infrastructure" to do it militarily as well...

Why is this discussion going sideways..?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Oh, lord -- not another war-mongering politician ... the ones who NEVER join the fight. I wonder if he suffers from bone spurs??

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Jimizo, I don't want lecture you. By the end of anti-Japan war, KMT to CCP was 8:1 in terms of military. KMT had govt, money and all other resources. Because ideology difference, KMT chose war to eliminate CCP but failed. The colonial mentality of KMT was hated by Chinese people.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Strangerland, obviously you are a stranger of Chinese history.

No, I know a fair bit both about Chinese history, and present day China as well. I've been to China over 30 times, and I speak some very simple Mandarin as well. I find China very interesting, and I have many Chinese friends. But I cannot agree with the policies and actions of the Chinese government in regards to freedom and civil liberties.

When it was founded, there were only a few people. By 1949 when CCP took over China, it already a biggest party in the world. Chinese people not only chose the party, millions died for it.

Oh I agree that the CCP is responsible for millions of deaths.

But the Chinese people have not had the option to choose their government. They are pawns of an authoritarian state.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

@Akie

Most Chinese people were not alive and virtually none were old enough to ‘choose’ the CCP in 1949.

Chinese people not only chose the party, millions died for it.

And millions were butchered by it.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Strangerland, obviously you are a stranger of Chinese history. When it was founded, there were only a few people. By 1949 when CCP took over China, it already a biggest party in the world. Chinese people not only chose the party, millions died for it.

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

CCP is chosen by Chinese people

No it wasn't. The CCP is an authoritarian party. The people have never been given the option to choose or refuse the CCP.

Do Chinese people have their right and freedom to choose ?

No, they don't, as the CCP does not give them that right nor the freedom to do so.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Jimizo, be humble please. You are not the world. CCP is chosen by Chinese people, not by people of Japan. Do Chinese people have their right and freedom to choose ? And the reason why CCP can take over China is that because KMT failed to protect Chinese people and Chinese territory against foreign powers. If you are interested in China, then study her history in full.

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

Strangerland, not on this planet, not in this UN, not in human history, not according to the rules and laws.

According to Taiwan.

The Chinese hate it, but boo hoo. Fact is, Taiwan is an entirely separate country. We all know it, the Chinese just try to pretend otherwise.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Strangerland, not on this planet, not in this UN, not in human history, not according to the rules and laws.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

@Akie

China does have a long and distinguished history. It was for a long time the most economically and technologically advanced civilization. I have spent time in China, have good friends there, have seen stunning beauty there and even attempted to learn Mandarin ( partly as a courtesy to clients and partly though my own interest ). It’s a fascinating place.

However, the monstrosity that was Mao and the corrupt, bullying and autocratic CCP which have continued have seen this country lose respect in the eyes of the world.

The vast majority world does not want to emulate modern China.

I’d love to see a free China and that means free of the CCP.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Jimizo, when China says One China, it means One China. Do you see any foreign troops on Tawain ? Mathematically One is One.

And yet, Taiwan is an independent country, separate from China.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I don't know much, but if, if, Japan, USA, etc., still made products instead of us having to buy everything Hecho en Chine, seems to me China surely wouldn't be prospering so much. I don't know what all that would mean, but at least we'd still have a manufacturing base. Maybe. Like I said, I know know so much. Except I'll fight for our basic freedoms, and have.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

englisc aspyrgend, you said "boundaries, limits and nothing". Would you please quantify these terms mathematically with facts and numbers ?

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

The superstates, be they Russia, China or the US could do with being taken down a peg or two. Their size and ambition will be troublesome for all of us as they continue to dispute and squabble over resources.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Jimzo, if you say corruption is a crime and crime is against law in Mandarin, you know corruption is against law. You don't have to debate it in parliament at all.

Perhaps a debate might be useful. It might fix it the heads of the infamously corrupt CCP bureaucrats .They seem to be a bit fuzzy on the ideas of corruption.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

What does China see as its "rightful place" in the world? What it has historicaly always seen as its rightful place, as the centre of the world, the "Middle Kingdom" with all the rest of the world paying tribute to it. Nothing has changed except a greater capacity to force its view on its neighbours. China has for some while adopted the approach of nibbling away at the boundaries, pushing the limits of what it can get awat with while practicing doublespeak to pretend that it is doing nothing of the sort! And you are a warmonger/using wrong thinking etc for claiming otherwise.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China," he said.

Then how come he wants to stay indefinitely in power in order to implement his market reforms, which are largely attempt at adopting Capitalism without threatening State power?

China has been able to grow so much because of Capitalism. The few cities where almost all the growth comes from are all free trade zones.

China is more capitalistic than America is right now. They want to have more free market but they are afraid to let go of the State control over the economy. Ultimately it's either more government or more free economy, you cannot have both, and they need free economy to keep growing. Economic growth is the only thing keeping an angry Chinese mob from stamping over the government.

Also, people are criticizing China for wanting to be more assertive abroad, while turning a blind eye on the sole superpower/hegamon. Do you all remember when Bush said - ''you are either with us or against us'', and the countless times Pentagon officials and other high officials in the US have said that they will not accept anyone challenging their world supremacy. Why is that OK, but if someone else does it it's not OK.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

We all knew this was coming.

Next, you will see something MORE than already HAS, off the coast of Okinawa, where

those tiny little Low Tide Sand Bars have been built up to Military OutPosts.

The worst is yet to come. Get ready for the first "Bloody Battle" and it will likely involve all those US Military

members and JSDF people on Okinawa.

Sounds like the next step is to "Take Back" Taiwan.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Jimizo, Mandarin is such a beautiful language that is simple, mathematically correct

I speak basic Mandarin badly. I agree it’s a beautiful language ( not the way I speak it ) but it isn’t simple and I don’t get the idea of a mathematically correct language. I wouldn’t call Mandarin particularly logical either if that’s what you mean.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

This is XI beginning of XI end!!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"Bloody battle" is probably mistranslated, or fake translation. It is helpful to quote original language in context. In recent history, China had terrible experiences in defending her own territories. Japan taught China a lesson how a "rich nation is not necessary a strong nation". I think China gets it.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Its hilarious seeing the people argue with you insist on links and citations.

Because everyone has an opinion, some have an agenda and quite often these two components of an argument are presented as facts.

Why would that help at all? Do people get all their facts and information from the internet without even thinking for themselves about what’s right, moral, and true for us as a species? Says a lot about the person...who needs a link to click on, instead of a thought to muse over.

Musing over thoughts is all well and good but the promotion of fiction, falsehoods and mistruths online cannot be ignored. Which is why it's good to have something to back up one's argument rather than just passion.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Nothing is more terrible than monopoly on thoughts. China, Japan, USA, Russia pursuit totalitarianism of ideology. But as long they all exist, 1984 will not happen.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Matt Hartwell

Wel put and thought out. If things are true they can’t be disproven, no extreme left or right rhetoric is usually worth any discussing.

Socialism in China is a joke now , and even if he ants that about Chinese actions overseas, they are corrupting the world and looting regions like Africa and central Asia.In mainland China , even if people have money they have 0 sense of how to use it and are all greedy uneducated stinky people.

Start taking showers first.

With such a huge area of its own stop fixating on Taiwan and HKG, let them remain what they are.

You're right that majority privilege exists in pretty much every culture on earth. But that doesn't mean that white privilege doesn't exist in the country it exists in. Trying to pretend it doesn't exist is ridiculous.

My view is that it exists and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it because its the natural product of being numerically dominant and building up a culture over centuries. Is it a particular privilege, when, as you agreed, every ethnicity achieves the same status in the countries in which they dominate? What is particularly privileged about that? You could qualify it by saying its no simple when you consider Western imperialism, but you could equally say that about pretty much every other ethnic group on earth. Go back through the ages and every one has been at war at some point and conquered new territory or lost it as a result. Eventually they settle down, defend off their opponents for long enough, develop a culture and develop a dominance. Its the natural order of the world. Animals btw, do exactly the same thing.

I believe its the duty of the government and ideally, its people, to integrate immigrants from other countries into the larger culture if they choose to take in immigrants. I am in favour of integration, not segregation and NOT attempting to dismantle the dominant culture and in the process discriminating against those that built it. You must have a dominant culture, dominant social norms, institutions etc to achieve unity or you no longer have a country, you just have tribes. That's Afghanistan. That country can be made up of different ethnicities if they all agree to play by a single set of rules which are favoured by the majority. Ultimately, how can it possibly be any other way if you want to see your nation survive?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

China’s style is to threaten and to bluster so that China’s enemies will just let themselves be rolled over.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

China could do with ‘safe spaces’ for those who disagree with the CCP. The expression ‘trigger warning’ would have a different meaning too.

I bet the great Liu Xiaobo didn’t cuddle a fluffy panda toy after being ‘insulted’.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

You absolutely have the right to criticize and fight for injustice, but you DO NOT have the right to prevent other people with a different point of view from simply speaking, in a completely non violent manner, at university, school, wherever. Especially at university. The whole idea of the place is the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Its really quite offensive to prevent people from speaking in that location in particular.

I would be in favor of a non-violent picket or a sit down or silent protest. Let the speakers speak and let the protesters protest without the two sides coming to blows.

That said, if a sexist/sectarian/homophobic/racist/anti-Semitic speaker comes to my neighborhood, as an individual I'd be less concerned if they got a hostile reception. And I mean, vocally hostile. But that's my own response. Ideally, it's better to hear them out for their foolish rhetoric & well done to those who can bite their tongues.

Those that try to ban you are no better than those that try to shut down an academic at university.

Short of promoting physical violence, everything should be open to discussion imo.

Agreed. I am not in favor of bans - the thing that worries me in this age of deliberate misinformation - it's getting perilous that falsehoods presented as facts will get accepted as facts. It has to be challenged.

I would not promote violence. Unless it comes down to last resort, end of days stuff - when there's a knock on the door and an entire family is taken away, never to be heard of again. Luckily we have not reached that extreme and I hope we never do. I leave that to the Xi and Kims out there.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

If you believe in free speech and the right to criticise, then why would you have a problem with those of us fighting injustice?

You absolutely have the right to criticize and fight for injustice, but you DO NOT have the right to prevent other people with a different point of view from simply speaking, in a completely non violent manner, at university, school, wherever. Especially at university. The whole idea of the place is the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Its really quite offensive to prevent people from speaking in that location in particular.

I've noticed here that those who shout SJW the loudest and claim we're shutting down freedom of speech are the same people who call on posters like me to be banned.

Ironically, I cannot name names, as this would mean my reply to you being deleted. But I am not referring to you.

You are quite welcome to compare me with Xi, SJWs, racists or whoever you like. This is your freedom of speech. Just like I can compare you to a youtube video, a pumpkin or a broflake.

But they are just our views (joking or otherwise) and they are unsubstanstiated.

Those that try to ban you are no better than those that try to shut down an academic at university.

Short of promoting physical violence, everything should be open to discussion imo.

Xi says China ready to fight 'bloody battle' to regain its rightful place in world

Sounds like Trump talking about the USA.

I'm with you for most of your post Matt. The extreme left is as bad as the extreme right. That said, I have to take issue with this:

This notion of so-called "white privilege". Stupid. Every country on the planet has a numerically dominant ethnicity that in large part created the institutions, law and culture of that country and they created it to suit their shared beliefs and practices. This applies to China, this applies to Japan, this applies to India, it applies to EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY ON EARTH. White people have no more "privilege" than that of any other country in which they have been historically numerically dominant and have built the dominant culture.

You're right that majority privilege exists in pretty much every culture on earth. But that doesn't mean that white privilege doesn't exist in the country it exists in. Trying to pretend it doesn't exist is ridiculous.

Now that said, the idea that we (white people) should have to apologize for having this privilege is just silly. No one (other than the white supremacists) has asked for it, and therefore cannot be blamed for it. It's just something that exists, and should be recognized as existing.

Under certain hiring practices and student programmes you are now seeing discrimination against white people and increasingly Asians as well in the oppression Olympics that the left likes to put forward as justified in the name of "diversity"

The extreme left, not the left.

@Matt, thanks for taking the time to reply. It's obvious you feel passionately about such categorisations and I appreciate that. However, it's simply an opinion you have - posted with no links/citations/evidence.

If you believe in free speech and the right to criticise, then why would you have a problem with those of us fighting injustice? You claim we're racist and anti-white - again with not a shred of evidence. I don't doubt that there's a few hypocrites but you'll find those within any ideology.

I've noticed here that those who shout SJW the loudest and claim we're shutting down freedom of speech are the same people who call on posters like me to be banned.

Ironically, I cannot name names, as this would mean my reply to you being deleted. But I am not referring to you.

An SJW is supposed to be an insult to those of us who believe in equality and justice. The term is used like somehow wanting an end to tyranny, racism, sexism etc is a bad thing.

'cos we are clearly exactly the same as Xi. With our nationalism, our land grabs and presidents for life and sabre rattling.

SJW's are compared with Xi in the sense that neither believes in free speech. And that's a fact that cannot be denied. You only have to look at the actions of SJW's on university campuses for quite some time now to clearly see they don't believe in free speech and as a result are a fundamentally anti-democratic movement. Its never conservatives on the right that shut down SJW events. Its ALWAYS from the left. The far left have had an easy time taking on the extremely limited numbers of actual Nazi's but now that normal conservatives and those broadly on the right are waking up they can expect some massive push back against their nonsense.

On top of the free speech issue is the increasing realization among non SJW's, especially whites, that many of these fools are out and out racists who seem to have a big problem with white people, even though most of them are also white, which goes to show how dumb and mindless these knuckleheads actually are.

In fact, white people have less "privilege" than Japanese or Chinese, because those two societies are largely walled off against outsiders. That isn't the case in the West. They are open societies and increasingly the same opportunities are available to non-whites as white people. Under certain hiring practices and student programmes you are now seeing discrimination against white people and increasingly Asians as well in the oppression Olympics that the left likes to put forward as justified in the name of "diversity" when its really just out and out racial discrimination.

Could be he took a note from Donald Trump's make America great again. Xi's objective is : Make China great again! Every world leaders has that vision and their rights to make their country great again. Not just Trump, not just U.S.!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Authoritarianism with Chinese characteristics.

clamenza: "Stalinist socialism IS socialism in its purest form."

Clearly you have no clue what socialism means. I'd say start by getting a dictionary and checking the meaning, but you'd just turn on FOX, and that's not a dictionary. Didn't you also say Obama is a socialist, but defend Trump's comments on how he wouldn't mind the US having the same thing as what Xi did here?

Like I said, you have no clue as to what Socialism means, purist form or most complicated.

Anyway, Xi's speech isn't that different from what Abe has given in the past few years to get increases in military spending, and to push for Constitutional changes and changes in government to keep his reign going.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

The scary thing is the scourge of the 20th century is slowly creeping back into the West in the form of compelled speech, for example. China's Xi and the pathetic SJWs in the west have more in common than they realize.

The even scarier thing is those who paint a revisionist picture of history denying key events in the rise of Nazism and the victims of the Holocaust.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Good luck Xi. Being a dictator isn't all it is made up to be.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Come on Xi isn't the first leader to give a dithyrambic speech to his fellow countrymen. They all do it.

What I always find funny on those political threads is that many posters still equate communism/socialism (presumably all forms) to nazism and dictatorship. Brainwashed.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Mao bought in weekly self denouncing meetings for everyone, Xi could probably use a few of those.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

China's Xi and the pathetic SJWs in the west have more in common than they realize.

I’d say Xi, Duterte and Putin have things in common. Authoritarianism would be one.

A pity the leader of the most powerful democracy on earth seems to be rather taken with all three.

I agree with you on the pathetic and dangerous attempts to curb free speech in the west, but I think admiration for types I mentioned should raise a few alarms too.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Tommy Jones - You got me there. Your comprehensive, air-tight rebuttel "nope" is a stroke of genius.

I shall humbly stand down.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

Don't believe me? Read Laurence Rees "The Nazis - a Warning from History" for starters.

Sure, but first you go read "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives" by Alan Bullock for starters.

The scary thing is the scourge of the 20th century is slowly creeping back into the West in the form of compelled speech, for example. China's Xi and the pathetic SJWs in the west have more in common than they realize.

-10 ( +2 / -12 )

Xi, I got news for you.

Right wing tongue wagging usually is inward talking. You are talking to your own divided billion people. You have problems on all borders.

Japan, the US, and it’s allies are also willing to fight to keep what’s there’s so let’s play nice instead of trying to tough talk so you can keep your grip on power at home.

China’s record with battling with its neighbors is terrible. It always self destructs, so learn from history and let’s stay peaceful.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

National socialism and communism are one and the same

No they aren't.

Not the same ideology, but provoking exactly the same outcome in the long run.

Nazi Germany, Stalin and Mao all lead to the same end. Millions dead.

Extreme politics always leads to extreme finales and piles of dead.

The middle path is always the best path and Western democracies have the balance largely right.

Doesn't mean there isn't a lot of reform to do, especially regarding cleaning up politics and the media.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

By the time 1.4 billion Chinese can afford a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, the world will have run out of everything and the globe will resemble a not very pleasant human anthill. Whether China's leader is right or wrong, the future does not bode well for any of us.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Why does Xi not inspire confidence that China will be a responsible and moral power in the coming half century? It's probably about time Japan nuke up as I don't think anyone knows what China will try and do

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Jittery responses here. The “bloody battles” is meant for those in Taiwan imo. Hong Kong had a little demonstration in 2014 but is under control. With the new law Trump signed, Xi had to respond to that and warn Taiwan.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Remember when the world made "room" for Hitler.....didn't end well did it.?

Socialism with Chinese characteristics? No! No!

The dictatorship of XI Jin Ping with Stalinist characteristics, underpinned by Chinese state terrorism against it's own peoples.

What is this socialism you speak of , Xi? And can you explain Xi's family $Billions of dollars hidden overseas.?

What about the 600 million Chinese living below the poverty level.? And when do they get to share in UR $Billions.?????

In China Only Xi Has "free speech"!

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Nice bit of sabre rattling to put the neighbours at ease.  and of course all of China (Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang) are sooooo  Chinese.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Hitler, like Stalin, saw every political opponent as the enemy. What were the gulags filled with?

National socialism and communism are one and the same

So, you are unable to answer the question?

The Nazis despised socialism and communism. They are clearly not one and the same, despite your bizarre claims.

Don't believe me? Read Laurence Rees "The Nazis - a Warning from History" for starters.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

The future looks bleaker by the day.

Certainly does when it comes to China and their intentions. One thing we could do to make it a little less bleak is remember who our friends are. That's a message Trump needs to hear loud and clear.

If the free world is united and strategically aligned through planning, then China cannot takeover, they don't have the manpower, bases or territory, if we are not united militarily at least, then we are easy pickings.

Japan is definitely in the firing line. I hope Abe hangs around long enough to at least secure a path towards further constitutional change through other leaders in the LDP, including a future PM.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

National socialism and communism are one and the same

No they aren't.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

False. Or perhaps you can explain why the nazis locked up socialists and communists first before turning on the Jewish population? Yes, some of the left wingers were Jewish but Hitler looked upon the socialists as scum. Dachau in 1933 was filled mainly with these political targets.

Hitler, like Stalin, saw every political opponent as the enemy. What were the gulags filled with?

National socialism and communism are one and the same

-13 ( +5 / -18 )

It’s obvious, Russian and America will have a big war, and China will come in at the end and take everything. That is what happened last time, when USA got everything.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

China has issued a warning. It considers anyone currently holding or administering lands and waters it considers as Chinese territory, as a future enemy that it WILL FIGHT to "regain its territory".

Japan has now been given a direct warning and threat about the Senkaku Islands and it should prepare to either hand over these Islands to China, or prepare for war with China. Sadly with Japans current constitution limiting it to Defense, it can never win a conflict. The obvious thing to do is to hand over the Senkaku Islands, and any other Japanese territory that China demands. Or fix your constitution to take the "gloves off" and allow Japan to have a chance to fight off China or any other aggressor by having the ability to "dish it out" as well as to take it.

China is preparing its millitary "as Germany was in the 1930's" for a time it considers itself ready to go to war and win against anyone. At that point it will start conflicts in areas it can contain and win, one war after another until it has "regained its rightful place". These words spoken by China's leader are prophetic of what China's intended actions in the future are. We can ourselves prepare for this horrific future in an attempt to forstall it. Or we can do nothing and await the Chinese tsunami to wash over the entire Asian and Pacific region leading to world domination, militarily, economically and socially.

The future looks bleaker by the day.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Don't panic. He's not speaking to foreigners; he's speaking to his countrymen. And his words are a sign of weakness, not strength.

All acts and tricks to separate the country are doomed to fail and will be condemned by the people and punished by history.

Here, he's likely referring to Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The latter will not return to the mother country until it is at least somewhat democratic, which is to say, never - but neither will it seek de jure independence as long as de facto suffices. Violence regarding the former three is on the rise, all caused by internal players with only minor help from sympathizers from abroad. It is to these Chinese citizens Xi is speaking.

History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China.

Here, he's likely referring to the "benevolent dictatorship if the CCP," and he's probably right. China has oft been compared to a sheet of paper covered with sand: any small disturbance of the underlying stratum will wreak havoc on the surface.

Then, of course, there is the unstoppable march of demographics. China is aging about as fast as Japan but has nowhere near the wealth Japan does to deal with the problems this will entail. (Google "dependency ratio for retirees japan vs. china")

The irony is that, while China is not ready for democracy, it cannot get ready without practice, and Xi is not providing that. Both Xi and Putin have now subjected their countries to the greatest instability of all: authoritarianism without gradual introduction of democratic reforms leave both countries highly vulnerable when the two inevitably vanish from the scene.

Very interesting take on the situation. I seriously hope you are right. All I want is more own little corner of the world to continue to develop peacefully and steadily, but if I have to take up the gun to secure the freedom of this country, or attempt to do so, so be it. I am not living under Xi's vision under any circumstance.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Unfortunately the only countries taking China seriously and what appears to be their global ambitions is the United States and Japan. Europe has turned a blind eye to the inconvenient truth of Russia and Putins desire to rebuild the USSR and they will do the same with China, especially if it involves spending money on securing their freedom. I do see signs of a change, but its too little too late. They need to step up massively.

The only hope the free world has is a robust alliance and one that is capable of bringing in more countries than just the West as well. Any country or peoples that value their freedom from tyranny should join that alliance.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

This is definitely some scary stuff - a leader who just appointed himself for life, talking about reclaiming China's place in the world.

It's as deluded as Trump trying to claim that America is downtrodden, even while it has the strongest economy on the planet.

These despots rile up the emotions of the people who are too ignorant to find out the truth for themselves. Though to be fair, that's a lot harder in China with the great firewall deciding what information they are allowed to see.

13 ( +17 / -4 )

Ahh, I see. Tanks rolling over protesters coulda happened in any Western capitalist society in 1989......

Ok. Got it.

Western? I thought the topic was Chinese but ok, ever visit NI/6 counties during "the troubles"?

Do you remember what happened when Irish socialists took to the streets of Derry for a civil rights march in the Bogside?

How Irish socialists were imprisoned without trial? How an elected MP was allowed starve himself to death in a Western capitalist society?

Xi and the Chinese "Communist" party are a disgrace. They are about as socialist as Ayn Rand.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

So China is willing to commit to global war to regain that which was lost through its own internal strife. Sure, they were attacked in moments of weakness but that weakness itself was of their own doing and during a time which weakness was always seen as opportunity. Now... all of that said, why should we, those of 2018, escape global war? The scale of global war will increase as communications and alliances deepen just as WW2 was on a larger scale than WW1. So the Chinese want Taiwan and mineral rights around the South China Sea and many islands to the North of those. Mao sacrificed millions of Chinese during the Cultural Revolution... do you, as a Chinese citizen, want to again sacrifice hundreds of millions of your own... just to appease National Pride. Your leaders have a two fold reason for taking this stance.... one is greed, the other is to deflect, by way of Nationalistic Jingoism, any other grievances you have with your rulers. Never trust a Government where you are actually kept in the dark... where they control what you see and read. But we know.... you're happy now, you've made some money, things are going well. Now is the time to take full advantage all the Pride they've festered in you.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

China needs to be big and strong, else it will be preyed upon and split up by rapacious foreign countries, like in the 19th century. The UK, US, and Japan are all guilty of that.

-19 ( +7 / -26 )

It seems tyrants and authoritarians all over the world are trying to seize power by appealing to a restoration of a mythic past that never really existed or at least is completely inapplicable to the modern day.

But then you can hardly blame them, that kind of rhetoric always seems to work on the simple-minded who slept through their history classes.

14 ( +17 / -3 )

Tiannanmen Square IS socialism.

Nope, it was tyranny - brutal and murderous tyranny.

Ahh, I see. Tanks rolling over protesters coulda happened in any Western capitalist society in 1989......

Ok. Got it.

-13 ( +6 / -19 )

When the tubby despot Xi talks about fighting "bloody battles" he doesn't include himself or any of his family. The blood will be shed by poor, uneducated Chinese, brainwashed into thinking Xi knows best.

"The Communist Party of China must... resolutely eliminate" corruption, Xi said.

Start by eliminating it within your own family then, you crooked tyrant.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

When a man has such power, and refuses to countenance ever relinquishing it...that's megalomania. A most dangerous thing for a leader to suffer from as history has taught us.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

"History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China," Xi said.

Kind of like how the Cultural Revolution saved China?

China's going down the wrong path and Donald Trump isn't helping matters any. I feel sorry for the next U.S. president who has to clean up his mess.

The world is coming unglued at the same time the U.S. president is. This is not good.

"The Chinese people have been indomitable and persistent, we have the spirit of fighting the bloody battle against our enemies to the bitter end," he said."History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China,"

“Nationalism and Socialism had to be redefined and they had to be blended into one strong new idea to carry new strength which would make Germany great again.

fight "the bloody battle" to regain its rightful place in the world.

"new era" of unrivalled global military and economic supremacy.

The rhetoric coming from Xi gets more alarming by the day. How much of it is nationalistic blabber and how much of it is a genuine desire for world domination? What is China's "rightful place in the world" precisely? Is it based on what it was hundreds or thousands of years ago? Times have moved on and the overwhelming majority of the planet has absolutely no interest in living under "socialism with Chinese characteristics".

If that is what China wants, then war is absolutely inevitable. If China wants a bigger seat at the table, then that would seem appropriate providing it can follow the rules or play nice in attempting to change them.

Unfortunately it seems like it wants more than that...

You also have this...

Chinese development projects abroad, saying they "will not pose a threat to any country."

Really? If that is the case why are sovereign assets of debtor nations swallowed up and then used as strategic assets to encircle others? What China has done in Sri Lanka and is doing in the Maldives is a case in point. What they continue to do in Doklam is another one. Its all designed to encircle India. Anybody who believes the notion of "no threat" and then listens to Xi going on about bloody battles etc finds it hard to square the two sentiments.

16 ( +19 / -3 )

Stalinist socialism IS socialism in its purest form.

IIrc, you seem to believe the Nazis were socialist too. And Obama. So I'll take your statement as perhaps an example of misinformed commentary.

Possibly but what Xi is doing isn't socialism. It sounds more like neo-Stalinist imperialism.

Stalinist socialism IS socialism in its purest form.

What Xi means is that only a socialist state can curtail the freedoms ordinary Chinese crave. Tiannanmen Square IS socialism.

Xi is bad news.
