"calls are now growing for a re-run"
From the EU, yes, but not from the British public. Even the fact checkers at the BBC admitted to this, leaving Alastair Campbell looking like a nana live on air.https://order-order.com/2018/09/20/alistair-campbell-torpedoed-bbc-fact-check/
Polling guru John Curtice (seen as the country's leading expert in that field) stated yesterday, 'there's no evidence of a shift in public support for a second referendum.'

Why are there countries in the EU attempting to stifle Brexit-don’t they believe in democracy?A majority of the British people voted for greater self determination and they (EU bullies) don’t wish that to happen!
If that recalcitrant posture exposes the warped spirit of the EU then the U.K. is better off without it......

There aren't.

There is nothing left to negotiate, the Parrot (May's chequers blueprint) is dead …..
'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more!
He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker!
'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you
hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies!
This unseemly debacle is unpleasant, poisonous and toxic. It is time for both sides except failure to negotiate a withdrawal agreement under the terms stated in Article 50 and go there separate ways whatever the consequences.

By the way anyone for a blind Brexit? With lashings of sickly sweet, teeth rotting, political fudge?
Forget hard and soft Brexit – we’re heading for a blind Brexit.....

When the political establishment treat the electorate like something nasty they have trodden in or found under a rock sooner or later that same electorate will deliver a boot up the jacksie.

British-ruled for now.
There appears to be a resurgence of pro-IRA sentiment, in some quarters. Just take a look around, next time you're in Dublin. Let's hope the push for unification does not go down the old road of paramilitary activism.
Still - thanks to the British electorate, changes have been set in motion that cannot be reversed.
The Irish economy can only benefit from Brexit as more and more international companies avoid the chaos in the UK and invest in the Republic. Also, a fair few British people are getting out of the UK and chosing to live in Ireland either by availing of the CTA or those of Irish descent applying for Irish passports.
Brexit just keeps giving and giving!

I don’t understand why you used ‘stifle’ here.
I do see the EU sending out a clear message that leaving the EU will be made as difficult as possible. That makes sense.
I also get a sense that the members of the EU will now be glad to see the back of a country that has been a pain in the arse for a long time.

"EU Council President Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron tore into May's plan for economic ties with the EU after Brexit, saying it simply "will not work" and was "not acceptable".
Macron is absolutely right and it is refreshing to hear a politician speak so bluntly and truthfully.
The party behind Brexit (UKIP) basically does not exist anymore. Its main leaders were long gone once the votes were cast.
Some of them tried to find other lucrative jobs (like working for Trump, albeit with no success).
All of these people, including Boris Johnson, talked and criticized a lot but when it was time to implement this disastrous decision, they all vanished.
Theresa May has a huge, uphill battle before her but compared to the Brexit instigators, she is at least trying to make the best of an impossible situation.
The U.K. will lose tremendously in this experiment and the Kremlin sponsors are more than happy.

The EU is trying to block May’s leadership at every turn.
To what end?
Why does that make sense?
Maybe it is because that reflects their self interest and not the majority of British people that voted to leave?
Finly, the EU shows it’s rank ugly domineering face to the world.
The British are better off out of it!

I'm British and I think leaving the EU is suicide. Economically and socially stupid, and risks the Northern Ireland peace process. The living standards for almost all residents will drop dramatically.
That aside, there will not be a second referendum and there will not be a deal before we leave. I never thought I would agree with May though, she is right not to have Northern Ireland treated differently by the EU single market than the rest of the UK.

True, but we have to go as our citizens voted for it. We have no choice.
Agree. A second referendum would undermine our democracy.
Agree too. So what do we do? The only way to soften the blow is team up with Canada OZ and NZ and form CANZUK. I know many here don't like the idea, but if ANYONE has a BETTER idea, I'm all ears.
I think N ireland needs a referendum- EU or UK. That will solve that issue. If they choose UK, then there will be a hard border with Ireland. If they choose the EU, then the British island can make an easier break from the EU- Unless of course Scotland decides to split, which will be another can of worms.

The more I see and hear from this EU Council, the more I say well done UK for the majority of it's citizens voting to leave.
And, well done British PM for sticking with the democratic decision, and not being fooled (along with the majority of British citizens) by the Fear Factor tatics of the EU Commission.

I think the UK government wanted a soft Brexit with trade protected, but was too incompetent to properly negotiate for one. We are now at the mercy of whatever the EU offers. The main card the UK has left is the UK consumer. Losing access to the UK market will hurt EU businesses, and it is pathetic that this could not leveraged into a workable deal by now.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called "Brexit backers are liars".
Now they are insulting each others like primary school children.
