People on some countries just don't realize how lucky they have been

Europe standards for PCR tests are using a high "Cycle Threshold" resulting a high rate of positive tests even if only few old non-contagious covid-19 fragment are detected.

That explains high infection numbers but low serious cases and deaths numbers.

To beat the virus into the winter,

means a lockdown again, now - lower numbers later!

The China story, too sad.

"Our family is shattered," she added. "I can never be happy again."

Large parts of Europe on Friday geared up for broad new restrictions to stop the coronavirus

These "large parts" are those that locked down and thus avoided herd immunity. These "large parts" do not lnclude Sweden, which is done with the virus. As I said early on, after this runs its course, most comparable countries will have similar numbers to Sweden, and overall the numbers will largely reflect the health of the population.

Incidently, I am wondering what will happen to the slogan that Europe is doing so much better than the US that we have been hearing so often. Seems gone now, doesn't it.

Actually, Sweden is nowhere near 'herd immunity,' as that term requires anywhere between 70 and 90 percent of the population to have contracted the disease and developed anitbodies. No country is near that.

As for the European model, get back to me when Europe reaches 200,000 deaths. Then again, when they do the US will probably be somewhere around 400,000.

Please post links to evidence that Sweden has reached herd immunity.

This kind of statement on a serious topic needs to be backed up.

Unfortunately the virus is not done with Sweden.

So much for easing up restrictions, a second wave is likely to put the final nail in the Olympics coffin. Or have the games with Japanese athletes only.

Incidentally, Sweden’s in Europe innit? According to you that’s doing better than anybody, so...actually the last time I heard that slogan was from you. Nice one.

From the article:

with Europe accounting for more than 200,000.

Didn't bother to look did you.

As of today:

As of 18 September 2020, 185 533 deaths have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: United Kingdom (41 705), Italy (35 658), France (31 095), Spain (30 405), Belgium (9 936), Germany (9 378), Netherlands (6 257), Sweden (5 864), Romania (4 312), Poland (2 253), Portugal (1 888), Ireland (1 789), Austria (758), Bulgaria (744), Hungary (669), Denmark (635), Czechia (489), Finland (339), Greece (325), Norway (266), Croatia (238), Slovenia (131), Luxembourg (124), Lithuania (87), Estonia (64), Slovakia (39), Latvia (36), Cyprus (22), Malta (16), Iceland (10) and Liechtenstein (1).

The US is already at 200,000 deaths, with a smaller population Than the EU/EEA.

With some near third world countries in there as well.

Talk about American superiority. They're better at catching and dying from covid than any other country.

@zaphod. You often post about herd immunity, but you do not seem to grasp what it actually means. No country has achieved herd immunity to this virus, including Sweden. Herd immunity in a country the size of Japan will takes years, all the while people will die from the virus or end up with life changing health issues. For a country to achieve herd immunity 85% of the population need to have antibodies. That number is huge.

Until we have an effective vaccine or the virus burns out (and that ship has sailed) there will be peaks and troughs of infection rates. Europe is entering the second wave, it was expected, the issue is whether countries are prepared for this. They should be, it’s not as if anyone with a brain cell beloved this virus would disappear. Unfortunately, many countries leaders are so bent and incompetent so these governments have no interest in mitigating a second wave. That includes my own country, the UK.

Firstly, there is no set percentage figure for herd immunity. It depends on the R rate and the living conditions. And secondly, nobody knows the infection rate because no country in the world can possibly test everyone constantly. What you should be looking at is the death rate. And that has been completely flat in Sweden since the end of July. No new deaths, aka the disease is done with in the country. Call it what you want.

As for the European model, get back to me when Europe reaches 200,000 deaths. Then again, when they do the US will probably be somewhere around 400,000

There is no "European" figure, as countries vary widely. This article itself only refers to a few countries. Sweden certainly does not apply any new lockdowns! Likewise, in the US, the figures for states vary widely. Almost all the deaths are in NY, Connecticut and Massachusets. Take those out, and the US death rate is actually very low. Using continent-wide averages is extremely misleading.

Well let’s hope that this does come to pass. And this is very good to read, because I was getting concerned about the rise in spikes and such.

Maybe this would explain Japan’s lower numbers as well.

I call it 5 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

These are the Blue states crying wolf the loudest.... Trump's fault. As early as March... Trump has trumpeted HCQ for early use....but these Dem Govs, playing the deadly political game.... banned them point blank.

Even worse ---- Coumo quietly sent covid-positive sick people to Aged Care homes where the D rate is highest. :)(:

Yet again you're just flat out wrong. A simple search will show that while New York and New Jersey do have the current highest number of COVID deaths, that Texas, California, and Florida are numbers 3 through 5. And that while New York had 7 deaths in the past 24 hours, Texas and Florida are both in the triple digits, with Cali being just below 100.

In fact, the death rate has been remarkably consistent since the beginning of July, averaging roughly 1000 deaths a day. And those deaths aren't happening in just 'Democrat' states, cities, or locations, but throughout the USA.

Why are you using past and present tense and in the same sentence?

Oh yeah, because you’re confusing now with last spring. I see.

As early as March... Trump has trumpeted HCQ for early use....but these Dem Govs, playing the deadly political game.... banned them point blank.

Still HCQ a cover up? Nobody can get it because the Democrats blocked it?

Wow, what almighty power they have. Seems they don’t need to win the election if they already have more power than the current President.
