The point seems so clear here.
Thank you Wanderlust

We allow ourselves to save suffering from our beloved pets...so we should be able to do the same for our fellow men.

That sad case didn't constitute assisted suicide. The girl voluntarily stopped eating and drinking in order to end her own life. Media outlets were criticized for reporting the case as euthanasia.

I think they should make a system similar with the donor card: personally, I would sign whatever papers necessary to agree if I will ever be terminally ill and in an unconscious state, please put me to sleep and let me die with dignity

My mother is lying in a care home bed totally demented, unaware of her surroundings, unable to talk, unable to move or walk even with assistance, unable to do anything alone, with regular pain meds to relieve her after breaking her leg; the carers pour food in one end, and wipe it out of the other end, day after day. That's not life. If she knew that this is how she would spend the end of her life, she would have been appalled. If she was a family pet like a dog or cat, she would have been put to sleep with no qualms. The rest of the family are in agreement that she should not be suffering needlessly or in pain, but this is zero quality of life.
Realization
@Cricky, I don't from what pain you feel like this.
However, this is the difference between father and kids.
A Father will be never think same (just medical costs and the longer it went the more mental torturous it became.). Father will spend all of his asset to keep alive his kids for another second.
And when father became older and suffer from cancer/else for years, we think no need to spend for him.
This is true every one has to leave the world but also true no one will came back for a second.
We are moving to a unfortunate world.

There are going to be problems, however, I would rather live in a society with legal assisted suicide than one without it.

...including recently a 17 year old girl in Holland, who was chronically depressed after being gang-raped by men which the media does not identify.
Yes, there are situations where I would prefer to die rather than continue to suffer, but formalizing this as a legal opition opens a whole new pandoras box of problems.

So terribly sad what Cricky wrote.
Myself at 54 with a wife and two teenage kids, I’ve often thought about what I would do if I became terminally ill. It would be such a terrible burden on the ones I love most.
I think I’d have a talk with my family and it’d be me and the charcoal grill in the shower room on a sunny day.
Good on Victoria state.

There have been some dubious cases in Europe where doctors have assisted people who really should not have been ready to die.
But, yeah, dragging out a clearly terminal illness is cruel to the person and the family. And extra year of life isn't so great if it's spent in agony and semi-consciousness, and costs the surviving family money they need to live on.
Disillusioned
Watching terminally ill relatives and friends slowly fade away and hanging on for days, weeks, months or even years is tortuous for both the sufferer and for the families and friends. This is a responsible and mature option that should be available to any terminally ill patient.

Option is key. Like @Cricky I've had to deal with these decisions. Allow individuals the choice.
Good on Victoria.

Had my father suffer from cancer for years, and years. If he had the option to die. He might of taken it. The family would not be so bent out of shape now. I turned off his life support said goodbye. There was no future just medical costs and the longer it went the more mental torturous it became.
