The Taliban can pay in opioids and the Russians can use them on their mutilated suffering soldiers and drug addled media stars.

Given the reports of hunger in Afghanistan, it's good to see some people there might be able to get some grain. It will be interesting to see which ones actually receive the wheat.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

What, pray, will the Taliban pay the Russian's with ?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

If it alleviates some of the suffering of the Afghan in the hills, then good for them.

Another rogue regime happy to buy from fascist Russia.

Another regime for Mini-me supporters to support. They have zero shame.

it was NOT a good idea to abandon billions of dollars of serviceable high tech weapons in Afghanistan.

Is your point that Trump and Pompeo should not have dealt directly with the Taliban, and left Biden to clean up after their mess. Trump's stench lingers on everything he came near. https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-middle-east-taliban-doha-e6f48507848aef2ee849154604aa11be

yes, some of you were hugely supportive of the Biden withdrawal and had no criticisms whatsoever of any of it.

a peace deal Trump started, with the release of 5000 taliban prisoners' Biden just finished what Trump failed to do.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Is my memory gone ?

i though Russian army lost a lot of their soldiers during the war against Talibans

Are they going to leave their graves to protest ?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

How will they pay? They claimed to have no money. Most of the weapons left were damaged and broken.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Are there people saying that it was a good idea?

yes, some of you were hugely supportive of the Biden withdrawal and had no criticisms whatsoever of any of it. Including leaving the weapons behind.

Ah, the mind of a hyperpartisan in full effect is a joy to behold!

Who precisely are 'some of you"?

I don't recall anyone saying it was a Good Idea to leave weapons behind. I don't recall anyone having 'no criticisms whatsoever of any of it.' But then again I don't have your supreme strawman skills.

Two desperate nations cozying to each others for the time being.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The move, the first known major international economic deal struck by the Taliban since they returned to power more than a year ago, could help to ease the Islamist movement's isolation that has effectively cut it off from the global banking system.

One pariah state dealing with another more backwards pariah state will in no way ease the Taliban's isolation in the international community. Russia offers discounts in order to sell everything these days because they are shunned by friend and foe alike. A true friend would pay normal full price but their so called friends are the first to demand discounts to continue to do business.

The Taliban is a lost male tribe unable to function in the modern world with their barbaric religious views holding Afghanistan back. They will remain isolated, perhaps for hundreds of years, leaving them all stranded in time as the world continues to evolve. They could end up like the primitive jungle peoples of the Amazon, with no contact with the outside world, and view modern civilizations as magic with the seeming miracles they can preform. It wont be quite that bad but it may as well be.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

What kind of nutter looks at a world map and thinks that Russia isn't big enough?

Putin apparently. Not just a nutter, a loser in both the literal and figurative sense.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Damn... Russia is desperate. The Taliban banned the growing of the poppy plant but that was just a way for them to control the crop. You can probably bet the dollar proceeds from the sale of drugs will be going to Russia in exchange for this gas and wheat. Interestingly... much of the drugs the Taliban controls probably will be sold to Russian citizens. Yeah.... Russia is desperate.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

That's so cool. The Afghans can pay for it with some of the billions of dollars' worth of military equipment the Americans left behind in their panicked scramble to withdraw last year.

@Blacklabel

Since you're so obsessed on this issue, let me explain: The agreement under which the weapons were abandoned was made by the Trump administration, aka, the Doha Agreement, in early 2020. Trump wanted it implemented in May, but Biden extended it to Aug.

So the question you should be asking is why did the Trump people fail to make any provisions regarding the de-commissioning the weapons.

Most Taliban use Eastern Bloc weapons, anyway. the advanced US weapons are pretty useless by themselves: an army needs the eco-system of parts, ammo, and servicing by trained personnel. Good luck getting those amid the sanctions. LOL. You're definitely barking up the wrong tree.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

LOL Russia's Putin is desperate and will sign a deal with the devil! Wait he is the devil the man has sold his soul!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@Blacklabel

Thanks, the article you posted supports my counterpoint and nicely undermines your original post. LOL.

From your article:

Much of the remaining equipment” left in Afghanistan requires “specialized maintenance that DoD contractors previously provided” to Afghan forces “in the form of technical knowledge and support,” the report states.

Good luck getting that with the sanctions.

The $7.12 billion figure.... corresponds to ANDSF equipment and not U.S. military equipment used by our forces,”

Nearly all equipment...was either retrograded or destroyed prior to our withdrawal and is not part of the ‘$7.12 billion’ figure cited in the report.”

These aircraft were demilitarized and rendered inoperable before the US military left, the report states.

Just another false narrative spread by the anti-West, anti-Dems, pro-Putin gang. Your desperation is really showing now.

Doesn’t THAT figure

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Russia's only friends are terrorists. This war is working well for Russians, just ask the horde of Russian men escaping the country and surrendering to Ukraine.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Don't know what the point of contention was but that article confirms that there's 7billion worth of weapons and equipment separate from the supposedly useless ones left behind by the US

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Supports the sociopath who negotiated the crap deal….

Has no part in its implementation.

Complains about the outcome while virtually cheering on the failure of his own nation.

Can’t get much Trumpier (or more disingenuous) than that.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

odd way to admit some of us were right that it was NOT a good idea to abandon billions of dollars of serviceable high tech weapons in Afghanistan.

Are there people saying that it was a good idea?

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Is your point that Trump and Pompeo should not have dealt directly with the Taliban, and left Biden to clean up after their mess. Trump's stench lingers on everything he came near.

no that was definitely NOT my point. At all. not even close.

Who was in charge when the withdrawal was executed and who chose to leave behind the weapons?

wasnt Trump.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

One pariah state dealing with another more backwards pariah state

The last time Russia had so many friends around the world was 1944~45.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the brains of so many Anglo-Americans. No matter how many facts are presented to them, they can't comprehend 'the world' is much more than North America, Western Europe and Russia.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Is there anything that came out of it?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

It was totally Trump. He “negotiated” (if that word can be used for dropping one’s pants and bending over) the deal. He set the time line. He did nothing, not a damn thing to prepare for it. Then he walked away (which was probably for the best given how badly he screws up everything he touches.)

So Joe came in and made the best of a bad deal. Nobody, especially Cheeto-Jesus saw the collapse coming. And like everything else in his life, he wasn’t around when the bill came.

It was in artful at best, but short of reneging and going into direct conflict, which the country had no stomach for, it was the least worst option.

Japan has also quietly started paying Russia for fish and seafood products again. Too late to stop prices at my favorite kaiten sushi restaurant going up.

billion dollars worth of usable (and tradeable) weapons.

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/27/politics/afghan-weapons-left-behind/index.html

A lot of US money for the Taliban to be playing with, and exchanging with Russia.

Trump would not have left behind all that equipment.

What an incredible waste that comes back to bite the US.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

See? Nothing is even near green ideology elsewhere, the picture shows you the global reality, full 100% fossils, in the houses, on the roads and of course in the orders from the Russians. And you tell me something with solar panels or replacing StaBu plastic straws by paper ones or anything else containing a climate saving carbon free future. Return to the facts, not to your phantasy Ideals.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

odd way to admit some of us were right that it was NOT a good idea to abandon billions of dollars of serviceable high tech weapons in Afghanistan.

cause ya know, the Taliban might get them and then trade them to some bad people who might use them against good people.

Sound familiar now?

-5 ( +10 / -15 )

The agreement under which the weapons were abandoned

we agreed to leave all the US weapons there? there was an agreement to abandon our weapons?

No we did not. Biden just left them do to ineffective planning of the chaotic withdrawal.

He also left Afghanis, Americans and even pets. Was that in the "agreement" too?

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

In essence, the US provided the Taliban with oil products, gas, and wheat, while also funneling money to Russia.

-6 ( +8 / -14 )

I don't recall anyone having 'no criticisms whatsoever of any of it.'

see this. not one criticism of Biden whatsoever. You dont have to "recall" its here today.

It was totally Trump. He “negotiated” (if that word can be used for dropping one’s pants and bending over) the deal. He set the time line. He did nothing, not a damn thing to prepare for it. Then he walked away (which was probably for the best given how badly he screws up everything he touches.)

and left Biden to clean up after their mess.

do you see any criticisms whatsoever?

i sure dont. just excuses for good old Joe- just doin the best he can.

So now the Taliban has all these weapons they shouldnt have to trade to Russia.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

anyway. the advanced US weapons are pretty useless by themselves: an army needs the eco-system of parts, ammo, and servicing by trained personnel. Good luck getting those amid the sanctions. LOL. You're definitely barking up the wrong tree.

7 billion dollars worth of usable (and tradeable) weapons.

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/27/politics/afghan-weapons-left-behind/index.html

"It included aircraft, air-to-ground munitions, military vehicles, weapons, communications equipment and other materials, according to the DoD report."

woof woof, this is the right tree after all.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Are there people saying that it was a good idea?

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

or they can pay with all those US weapons that the Biden administration abandoned in Afghanistan.

One Taliban official claimed that the group has secured more than 300,000 light arms, 26,000 heavy weapons, and about 61,000 military vehicles as spoils of war.

The Taliban, which have thrived off smuggling of other sorts, aren’t averse to arms-dealing, especially with fellow travelers. “The Taliban have an ideological affinity with these groups the same way that democracies tend to get along and support each other,” Jamal said. “The ascendance of other fundamentalist-militant groups will serve to affirm the Taliban’s model, so the regime in Afghanistan has an interest in supporting these groups across the region.”

“I am not surprised that U.S.-supplied weapons from Afghanistan, the vast bulk of which is now in Taliban custody, are going to militants elsewhere in the subcontinent,” he added.
