over 22,000 feet!! OMG. I hope the last of the dead were already gone, the terror of sinking that far into the darkness and still being alive doesn't bear thinking about.

There is a really cool video on YouTube that shows you the depth of each shipwreck in comparison. They'll have to update the video with Sammy B being found. Here is the link...

It's an amazing story. The whole thing can be read about in the excellent book "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers."

The Samar engagement involving the ships of Taffy 3 was truly an epic, David vs. Goliath battle in the annals of naval warfare. Two other heroic ships that were sunk were the destroyers USS Johnston and USS Hoel.

As a moving account by the BBC reported, about the Johnston:

It was only after two hours of fighting, with the ship hit by dozens of shells and its survivors clinging to the rear of the battered vessel, the [Johnston] finally sank, taking with it 186 of her 327 crew. Survivors reported one of the Japanese destroyer captains saluting as it slid beneath the waves.

The part where you think about just how long it took to sink all the way down to there.. just slowly falling for FOUR miles into the dark..
