Get a long pole, piece of rope, anything that floats, etc. Don't just jump in!
Even trained lifeguards have trouble saving people in deep water with no equipment.

...you're kidding right?

I really don't quite understand all the "minuses" the first five comments received...? Have those people lost a sense of compassion ? It IS a tragedy and I also feel very sorry for the whole family. (I often get thumbed down anyway so now I'm now immune...)
Kapuna
Terrible thing to happen to this family or, to anyone.
kochikame
Very sad...!!
Mocheake
FightingViking, I could tell you why but I think you can guess.

What a terrible tragedy! Even though I'm not much of a swimmer I would've probably dived in after her my own self just to beat the odds.

I am wondering what it was about that reservoir. Was it several meters straight down from the edge and the edge lined with slippery mud?
Mocheake
Such an awful thing. This is tragic no matter where and who it happens to. RIP.

Take time and get rid of your clothes and shoes before swimming, people! Panicking and jumping clothed in order to save someone is an almost certain way to tragedy. Experiencing a swim fully clothed was a real eye opener for me...
ebisen
Nessie, you've obviously never swam clothed before. Unless you're wearing proper swimming wear (bathing suits or, wet or dry suits), you're really always better naked.

Could have been a rough current, regardless if the currents are rough and you are not a good swimmer the undertow can take you down!

my heart aches for these poor people...no words.
TumbleDry
Tragic but 7 of them?
Nessie
Obviously you have no basis to say what I have and haven't done, since you don't know me.
I live in Hokkaido and I've swum clothed in very cold seawater and in snowmelt streams. As your body cools, you quickly lose coordination. Clothing makes it harder to swim, but it will slow the rate of cooling for your body, particularly if you're wearing wool, so that you keep your coordination for longer.

Terrible. Aweful. Tradgic. RIP. So sad. OMG. I know what you should have done.. So sad RIP. Everyone should read JT comments before you leave the house today.
Nessie
It depends on the water temp. You're be better off in clothes below a certain water temp.
