Being totally oblivious to the world of fashion, I'd never even heard of this man before his drunken rant went viral. I suppose there are many others who would say the same thing. Instead of his achievements, the man may only be remembered by most of the world because of the spectacular way in which he chose to end his career.

Regretfully, Galliano's anti-semitism was covered up by Dior for years until he was finally publicly exposed on the internet. Mel Gibson also hurled anti-semitic racial epithets while drunk exposing deeply repressed racism. Anti-semitism still seems to remain strong in Europe and western countries - but is virtually non-existent in Asia.

funny Galliano being antisemitic, considering he doesnt have blonde hair or blue eyes, and would not have being considered for Hitlers pure race back in the day,,,so sad these people who are racist,,,,we are all the same, human, all 99.9 % the same with that 0.1 percent detemining our eye and hair and skin colour

The world of fashion is such rubbish anyway, he was probably bored out his mind, hence his heavy drinking. People say stupid stuff when they're hammered.

It has always surprised me that people can still get into so much trouble (legally and otherwise) by just mentioning the Nazis and Hitler. There have been many other cases of massacres in history but only the Holocaust seems to be off limits. One wonders why some seem to get tempted to have these anti-Semitic rants...What is the underlying reason?

May be it'll be good for Galliano to learn some humility after this debacle. He'll soon find out common people need to make reservation at fancy resturant and , once seated, has to behave with civility towards others. Don't worry too much about him, he's a millionaire and won't be out on the street anytime soon ( like common people ).

Indeed, and I'm also surprised that this has been considered such an important world news; its the third AP article about Galliano's troubles in about a week!
atamant
It is not a major story nor is it considered by anyone to be such important world news. However, nothing wrong with AP mentioning it. They are not the only ones. I am sure you agree that such racism should not be tolerated.

JT selects 5 news items to put into their "World" news section. They chose at least 3 news items about the Galliano case in about a week. If it wasn't considered important news, don't you think they would have chosen other news instead of this.
atamant
No, not necessarily. This is a site devouted to news of interest. Perhaps the editors felt the story about Galliano was interesting enough to follow. You and I obviously agree with them as we have both been following it too. Strange to complain about others being interested in something you yourself have shown an obvious interest in.

Yeah, what I find very interesting and its what I have been basically saying since the first Galliano news is the fact that such a big deal is made specifically by this type of hate speech.
atamant
Yeah, what I find very interesting and its what I have been basically saying since the first Galliano news story here is that fact that France makes a big deal about all types of hate speech. In fact, I proved to you that they do. What is it about this type of hate speech being punished like any other that bothers you so?
sabiwabi
Atamant,
The Dieudonne case I explained before clearly demonstrated that France and her media is not fair and balanced when dealing with hate speech.
I am only bothered by the lack of balanced and fair response to alleged hate speech in Europe (and North America).
atamant
The Dieudonne case is another example of how hate speech was punished in France just as Galliano's is being punished. All hate speech crimes are prosecuted in France. Galliano's will be, Dieudonne's were many times and Bardot's was. There is no lack of balance for fairness in these examples. There is only a lack of decency and common sense on the parts of the hate speakers. It does not matter that you seem to agree with Dieudonne's hate speech, it was hate speech all the same and it was prosecuted. Don't like it? Tough luck.

The probable reason being - Jews do not have much local influence any more in Asia. Previously they did - and I understand there were a few big Jewish enclaves in China, for example - however they were run out of Asia. On the other hand, anti-Chinese feeling remains strong in parts of Asia - Japan, for example - but is virtually non-existent in the Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland etc.
Anyway - I have no sympathy for this sick Galliano pervert.
