The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. Maybe it will some day. Maybe not. If guns are banned in the U.S., people will just find something else to kill each other with. It's not the gun's problem. People who are in prison for shooting another person or who are una-bomber crazy should not legally be allowed to own guns. I doubt any new legislation will be coming from the federal side - the states that still allow gun show sales between private parties without background checks can eliminate that through their own legislation. The federal government can help by providing more money to U.S. Attorneys to prosecute "straw sales" and unlicensed dealing.

Well, actually no. What gun nuts like to overlook is the mechanisms by which those guns flow into the hands of outlaws. That happens chiefly via a middle man, the very law abiding citizens you want to arm. In fact, a great many law abiding citizens buy guns and become outlaws themselves. Imagine if we never armed them!

Reducing the overall number of guns reduces the overall number of gun crimes and gun deaths. The logic is sound and at the elementary school level. Accept it.

I read the entire article, and am not at all in the wrong for criticising the woman that the author of the article chose to open with. Ms. Smith is a real person, believe it or not, and she is like many other gun enthusiasts as spoken about in the lines following the opening, stocking up on unnecessary lethal weapons because of paranoid delusion and irrational fear. Don't get wrong? I was bought up in an environment in which guns were used extensively - for hunting. I have also played war for real. In my home state you have to be 12 and have to attend a gun safty course to hunt or use a gun... Guns dont kill people do, just like knives, box cutters, cars, and bombs....

Smitty, Actually, I wasn't much older than 10 when I received my first gun, a 4-10 shotgun. That said, I went through a course in gun safety and had to pass a test on how to walk with a rifle and/or shotgun, how to cross a fence, how to load and unload it and how to store it safely. I'm pretty sure that the entire thing was put on by the community and was not law, but...the lessons learned there stick with me to this day. I don't think it would be a bad idea to make those lessons mandatory, much like the test we must pass in order to drive a car. And I absolutely think that background checks are a good idea too. What if said person was a violent felon, or (gasp) a terrorist? I guess taking measures to protect us from them nasty terrorists are only considered valid if if they come from a moron and not a well educated person. Amazing, is it not?

I told you before, I don't think I would see you in places where I would go to either see relatives, friends, and especially my staff. The US is a very, very sick nation when it comes to gun-loving and the lack of gun control in general, and I do indeed hope Obama reigns things in. As well as putting strict controls on sales of firearms, he should pass legislation requiring ALL firearms to be registered and kept locked up in the house. Finally, he should ban all gun shows/circuses like the one in which the 9 year old boy shot himself in the face with an uzi last week!

I would like common people to have guns to protect them from the government. Many of you were too young, but right on the other side of my mom's house, in horror, all of us got to see how they took Elian. Like flamming Nazis they came in, guns pointed at faces, hair was pulled.
