Not by choice by the look of it.

Finland has been a NATO member in all but name for quite a few years. NATO members routinely conduct exercises in Finland and their air force is integrated with that of Denmark, Norway and Sweden jointly patrolling Scandinavian skies.

Congrats Finland and NATO!

Not by choice by the look of it.

Finland's parliament voted 9 to 1 in favor of joining NATO. Couldn't be more literally by choice.

Well Putin already put them on the Polish-Belarussian border.

next months news will be cancelled due to the destruction and extinction of human being due to the nuclear war.

How many times has Indicted War Criminal Putin mentioned nukes in his speeches? How many has Biden?

Hope this was the outcome Putin wanted. Sweden will be joining too and Ukraine will try to join as soon as they kill their invaders out. too. Seems it is too dangerous to be outside NATO when Russia is close, at least under Putin.

I really look forward to a day when NATO isn't needed anymore. Spending money on so much military is wasteful. Only dictators need military to retain control over their people.

Putin made it happen.

Its meaningless. Only the warmongers care.

He doesnt care.

The more interesting question is, if really anyone will come for help if Russia would conventionally attack Finland too. And of course they will or at least they feel that they have to. They simply cannot tolerate such a long NATO border in direct neighborhood. That’s sure for 99.9% , because they also invaded Ukraine when there were still only far away rumors of a potential NATO membership in the future.

He doesnt care.

He cared enough to put on a big show of his withdrawal proposal he tried to force on NATO.

You're right, NATO will come and feel they have to. It's in the treaty.

Putin invaded a country Ukraine that was not a NATO member, is only getting assistance from NATO, and has not been able to accomplish his objective in over a year.

Why would he now invade Finland, a NATO country and go up against 30 countries that will fight Russian forces directly?

I think even Putin recognizes that he's already made an error in judgement. I don't see him foolish enough to make matters even worse. I'm not even sure the Russian military has the resources to invade Finland.

Newsflash: Putin never had any intention of invading Finland, Poland, or any other country. Its the warmongers and their shills who spout that nonsense.

The Russians will complain NATO continues to move on Russian borders but with Finland joining NATO as a direct result of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the blame is as it has always been. NATO has been drawn eastwards by Russia's hostile behavior and threats to other ex soviet nations. Russia has issues with ex soviet nations seeking a future in closer association with the west. Russia has nothing to offer but its dictatorship and endemic corruption which ex soviet nations are well aware of, and to which they were subjected to for decades.

Finland was not in the Soviet Union, it was neutral but found that no longer protection enough against Russian ambitions of expanding its borders. Russia has again enlarged NATO so can not complain about the eastwards movement of NATO.

Well done Finland and congratulations NATO on your newest member. Strength and safety in numbers.

On the 17th February 2022 Kremlin officials stated no invasion of Ukraine was underway or planned.

On the 20th February 2022 the russian ambassador to the US stated clearly that there was no plan to invade Ukraine.

On the 24th February 2022 russia launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine.

Newsflash: Putin is a barefaced liar.

At the end of 2021, Putin denied he was going to invade Ukraine. But he did.

The former Soviet Union tried to invade Finland in 1939 and lost badly. Only Sweden aided the Finns who were badly outnumbered but still outfought and out thought the Russians in what is called The Winter War. The Finns are far better armed today.

No, not happening. The Finns have been clear that while they are joining NATO they are not going to host permanent bases for other NATO member's military units. In any event NATO forces have been conduction joint exercises with the Finnish military in Finland for years.

What nuclear weapons the US keeps in NATO will remain at their bases in Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Turkey (unless there is a major dispute between the US and Turkey that causes the US to withdraw). The facilities to store and secure nuclear weapons are very expensive to build and then guard.
