The usual suspects have turned this into a right vs left argument and in their devotion to their partisan arguments are missing the bigger picture here.

No one should care what a person does in their private life as long as it doesn’t impact their job. When your job is being the leader of your country then anything you do or say can be held against you, as it rightly should in a democracy.

There is a reason why she is taking a drug test. And previously she partied after coming in contact with a Covid positive person.

She allowed her political opponents (if any since I am not familiar with Finland politics) an opening which is a sign of naivety in itself.

If her politics was not left leaning all these usual suspects would be singing a different tune. Folks who are criticising her would be defending her and folks who are defending her would be tearing her apart.

any kind of country is worth of being taken seriously but each person has the right to have a different opinion. This is getting uncivilized and childish. Everyone should calm down already.

No wonder people don’t take Finland seriously. Nice country though overall.

Because their PM likes dancing? Seriously?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Everyone hating everyone, a pleasure to some people’s eyes, but its actually a disaster. Could you all please stop arguing over one’s person opinion?

People have right to have an opinion that’s different from yours, even if its sth you feel strongly against.

As for the topic of the article, personally I if I were a Finnish citizen, would actually reflect on the personality of the PM chosen by me a lot, and the actions and lifestyle are good markers of personality.

Most likely ignorance, and also, there is the language barrier. Not many people speak Finnish.

But of course you aren't buying it. When reality conflicts with your predetermined notions, it creates anxiety. Easier to disbelieve

Ok.

The right: Separating children from their families is good. Cops killing people of color with impunity is awesome. I love it when democracy is under threat. These things are all good.

What?

A woman dances -

The right: This is disgusting. She should be killed for this. Preferably by a cop.

Slow down, no one is calling for that, I merely said, hard to take the woman seriously as a politician, didn’t say she was bad or evil or wrong, just a business opinionated professional observation.

Speaking in English, Marin, the Nordic country's youngest-ever prime minister, said she didn’t have any government meetings that weekend and "I had some time off and I spent it with my friends. And I didn’t do anything illegal.”

Young, smart socialist democratic woman. A video of her dancing and it triggers the same contingent.

Drawing parallels to AOC's similar video from her college days.

We need more fair, clean genuine social democratic women and their policies like AOC and Marin and fewer corrupt corporate Democrats, Republicans and LDP politicos.

Ok, still I’m not impressed and if Finland was so great, why don’t you see all the migrants moving there and enjoying all the wonderful things that they have to offer.

Don’t know whether the Finns play such dirty politics which is common elsewhere.

For example the PM of my country did a lot of things to outmanoeuvre his opponents within his own party in order to rise to the top, and the ambitions of one of his opponents who was earlier his comrade were nipped in the bud because of a sex video shot surreptitiously and released to discredit him.

Keeping a file filled with the dirty secrets of all of one’s political friends and foes is par for the course here, that’s why I asked if Finland is new to such dirty politics or not.

Not suggesting that a liberal European democracy should fall to the pathetic standards of my country but still a person holding the top political office should have been slightly careful.

Trying to get liberals to agree to hold a socialist democrat responsible for poor personal behavior is a pointless waste of time.

Blacklabel getting upset and clutching his pearls due to “poor personal behaviour”. Now I’ve seen everything.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Actually they do.

Ok, not buying it.

Finland has the third least corruption in the world.

Finland is the freest country in the world together with Sweden and Norway.

Finland has the least organised crime in the world.

Next to Norwegians and Icelanders, Finns feel the second least insecure in the world.

Finland’s judicial system is the most independent in the world.

Finland is the best country in protecting fundamental human rights in the world.

Finland excels in education and many in the US are looking to Finland to see how they can fix their failing education system.

Ok, still I’m not impressed and if Finland was so great, why don’t you see all the migrants moving there and enjoying all the wonderful things that they have to offer, I would love if they would do that, but they’re not, so there goes that. If you like Finland great, good for you and I’m happy for you, I love America and I think it’s the best, that’s just my opinion.

Most would not judge a country by flippant comments like some like, some don't.

O wasn’t dissing it, no need for over analyzation, I said what I said, nothing more. Sorry, if I’m not on the Finland bandwagon and by the way, people talk smack about the US all the time. No sweat off my back. We all have our own opinions, that’s it.

What reasons would people have for not taking Finland seriously?

There’s some people that don’t like the social program, don’t like the progressiveness of the country or the food or the lifestyle, the many reasons that everybody has like a certain country.

Blacklabel

Trying to get liberals to agree to hold a socialist democrat responsible for poor personal behavior is a pointless waste of time.

In this case, it's fine personal behaviour. Having fun is OK, you know.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

poor personal behavior

What poor personal behaviour? I don’t see it.

What behaviour would you regard as poor for the leader of a country?

Your standards must be extraordinarily high. Admirable in some ways.

Saying that ‘people’ don’t take Finland seriously is not a personal point. Personal means regarding a ‘person’. Singular.

i’m not so sure, because that bag is mixed, so that’s why I said it and I’m allowed to say whatever I want

The vast majority of Finnish people are also well-spoken in English as well as a variety of other languages.

The point is that its easy for a high profile person attending private parties to be compromised. A political opponent can easily get someone to spike her drinks and make false allegations to bring her down.

Really?

Don’t know whether the Finns play such dirty politics which is common elsewhere.

Where?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Why wouldn’t people take Finland seriously?

Some do, some don’t.

Looks like ‘why’ isn’t doing the job here.

I’ll try again.

What reasons would people have for not taking Finland seriously?

I’m honestly interested.

I see it as a prosperous, well-educated nation.

I’m sure you’d agree.

I do not.

Why wouldn’t people take Finland seriously?

Some do, some don’t

I’m intrigued.

Interesting.

So who doesn’t take Finland seriously?

Why wouldn’t people take Finland seriously?

I’m intrigued.

I am not complaining, I don’t live there (thankfully) I was making a personal point.

America needs to step up it's game for the sake of it's people.

Again, Finland is not America and vice versa. If people want to live or move there go for it. I love America and wouldn’t trade it for the world, that’s why I still own property. Finnish people can be proud and happy and so am I with my country, they don’t envy me and I sure don’t envy them. Live and let live.

The man of contradictions. “No wonder people don’t take Finland seriously.”

Has nothing to do with her being a woman, no need for projection and speculation.

What?!

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin is a good example of a social democratic leader of a country with low poverty, robust, efficient social services, and very importantly one of the least corrupt nations.

https://www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/the-curious-case-of-finlands-clean-politics/

Quite a contrast to the coup attempts, riots, poverty and corporate corruption affecting the so-called "Greatest Nation on Earth".

America needs to step up it's game for the sake of it's people.

You’re the one complaining about Finland,

I am not complaining, I don’t live there (thankfully) I was making a personal point.

In Europe, which you frequently claim not to care about.

Right!

do intelligent successful women bother you or something?

No, I have four sisters and most of the women in my family are financially successful. I love it!

Until you need our help in your wars.

We help you so it goes without saying.

That’s why the leaders in many countries are guarded at all times, though I don’t for a moment suggest that spending tax payers money on clowns is justified.

what reasons do you have to bad mouth Finland and Prime Minister Sanna Marin? Did they do something to upset you?

Again, they are happy good, they also should be happy (since 1946) because when it comes down to it, America will always be the one in the end to ensure their happiness so the Russians don’t take it.

The last time Soviet Russia invaded Finland they were repelled by the Finns. They call it the Winter War.

Your biased comments are difficult to understand. Did a Finnish girl refuse your offers?

It must be nice to live off dreams of American exceptionalism.

Look, I don’t envy the Finnish and if people want to live there, go for it. I’m not jealous, don’t want to be, love or emulate them. They do what they do and we do what we do and why is it that liberals are always so angry and miserable?

Seriously? Random discrimination.

None

The leaders of countries are allowed to have time out, party, and enjoy themselves. Her time, her life.

Good for her. Doesn’t mean we have to take her seriously.

Since 2002, the World Happiness Report has used statistical analysis to determine the world's happiest countries. In its 2021 update, the report concluded that Finland is the happiest country in the world.

Which people?

11 ( +12 / -1 )

It must be nice to live off dreams of American exceptionalism,

That is just the same rotten old puritanical streak that infects American society. Fun = sin is the operating equation of too many Americans. And if you are sinning, I mean having fun, then you must be a bad person who is going to hades. I was brought up in that environment and know well that miserable way of thinking.

What’s all the fuss about? It was a private party. She doesn’t ‘dance’ to YMCA at public events or anything embarrassing like that.

How dare a woman in her thirties behave like a woman in her thirties!!!!

The 60+ year old men of Finland are rightfully outraged!

Women in the 1960s and 1970s never behaved like this...oh they did.

Rather than corrupt neo-liberals funneling the nation's treasure to their corporate buddies.
