Fire at martial arts school in central China kills 18 people

Having suffered some 2nd and maybe 3rd degree burns to just one foot the pain was excruciating, worst pain I have ever experienced. I cannot even imaging how horrible it would be to burn to death. I don't care what country you are from, seeing innocent people burn to death is an awful tragedy. From experience the average Chinese is not responsible for the CCP. They are victims as much as anyone outside of China.

Anyone who has seen any decent martial arts movie from HK (36th Chamber of Shaolin for example) will realize how much of wood is used in the temple buildings which is susceptible to fire.

Also never understood why Japanese homes still use so much of wood for construction.

This at least suggests a significant lack of regulation of such schools.

Awful as this is, I wonder if, and to what extent, this school was insured, passed health and safety inspections, etc. If the owner is found guilty of not following rules, etc., he won’t just likely lose his livelihood, he will have people’s deaths on his conscience.

And he is right. How do want to regulate such a thing? Anybody can invent their own martial art and declare themselves great grandmaster in it.... in fact this happens all the time. I do not see what kind of "regulation" would prevent that. Building regulation is a different issue.... without more details in the article it is safe to assume that there were too many people and too few fire escapes in the building in the story.

If the owner hires qualified instructors I do not see a problem. I have a business renting residential property. I have no idea how to build a home and very limited skills making repairs. I hire qualified contractors and a qualified manager to take care of that.
