"In a nation that is increasingly divided along political lines, some expressed hope that fascination for this spectacular phenomenon would offer people a chance to unite."

I have been watching the total eclipse of US democracy for 6 months with absolutely no effect on my retina. My stomach is really queasy, however.

Need to remember to step outside on Monday afternoon to see it. Should be about 97.8% covered, so not total, but close. Weather forecast is partly cloudy and 32.2 deg.

Remember an eclipse in 1991. My boss had setup a 5inch telescope with all the necessary filters in the parking lot. It wasn't total in that location, but 65% is still impressive.

Crazy Joe

It will show up as you age as little spots in your sight from the intense light similar to welders in Industry getting flashes .

There are many ways to watch an eclipse safely so in future please use them for your own sake as i have had to have my lenses removed similar to cataracts and artificial implants used.

An 80%, 90% or even a 95% eclipse is not good enough! Do what ever you can to get into the 100% eclipse zone.

Even with 5% or 10% of the sun still exposed it is going to be far too bright - it will just seem like an overcast day and you will not get to see any of the eclipse 'surprises' that a full eclipse gives you.

If you can manage it, see it from the top of a hill, a mountain or from the ocean with no obstructions to spoil the view of the horizon in all directions. You won't regret it. And remember, anything less than a full eclipse and you have to keep your protective glasses on the WHOLE time, however during the full eclipse (when you can only see the sun's corona) then you can view those few minutes without the glasses and that makes all the difference. Be careful to put them straight back on when the diamond ring appears though!

The closest I've been to an eclipse was around 70% totality

The event, coined the "Great American Eclipse," is inspiring a surge in tourism in the United States

In this eclipse, the US is literally the only country where totality would pass thru

Too bad for the average viewer paper glasses have been so difficult or expensive to obtain. At least where I live supplies from retailers or free city vendors ran out weeks ago. If libraries and schools had known this would be such an event they would have put much more grant money into programming.
