Thanks for the coverage of this event from back home. NHK couldn't even be bother mentioning this on their news last night and instead crapped on about their new budget for more awful programming.

Is that right mrsynik? I must admit I missed the news last night. But let me take a guess! They didnt want to have to mention how there is so little people in such a big area. Go on compare the numbers to that of Brazil. People numbers and size of land numbers; its so obvious do I really need to spellt it out. The whole 'Big Australia' or not issue, tends to sway to the Big, in light of the size and numbers. Perhaps the certain European lean of NHK, is starting to trip. How hard do Australians really want to push themselves, I pray they realize how hard theyve been pushed.

illsayit - I sat through the entire 7pm bulletin last night, and also saw nothing of it on Ohayo Nihon this morning either. The BBC, France 24 and a few other news agencies elsewhere in the world have been covering it. I'm surprised the Japanese National broadcaster can't be bothered mentioning a once in 37 year catastrophic event in a major trading partner's 3rd largest city. Perhaps its payback for the whaling stuff.

Illsayit, quote: "its so obvious do I really need to spellt it out."(sic)

What? What are you trying to say or suggest? Brazil gets less attention than Australia?

I have to admit that I was shocked by the lack of coverage on J TV and the lack of interest shown by my J wife when I tried to explain what was going on there. She would probably have been just as unresponsive if I had mentioned Brazil too. I wonder if they (Australia and Brazil's floods) are both El Nino related weather patterns?

mrsynik, I didn't see it last night but I saw it on the news this morning.

I will probably get howled down for this but do you really expect any different. Unless it directly impacts Japan then it doesnt seem to matter.

La Nina, this time. (Or so I'm told. Hell, I'm no expert :) )

Interesting that so far few people have commented on the thread about the Brazil flooding and landslides that claimed 150+ people.

I seen reports about the australian floods on a few channels, avoid NHK for getting good news coverage here.

Just watched a special report on BBC, courtesy of ABC about the floods in and around Brisbane. Really devastating, fortunately not so many casualties.

I recall reading that a dam had been planned, one that was supposed to forestall disasters of this magnitude, but the eco-extremists won out and now Australia has lost. Maybe Tim Flannery and Peter Garret and the other wingnuts will clarify...

I dont believe that a dam would have stopped this disaster from happening the scale of the flooding is just too great and spread over to big of area for a dam to have prevented this. I guess it is just one of those freak natural events. While this site has been reasonably good at reporting the events in Qld, it has made no mention that the rest of the east coast of Australia including Tasmania are now experiencing damaging flooding.

SolidariTea - yet again someone who does not know the whole facts. when will anonymous people on these forums stop making uneducated & ignorant statements about an issue they little or nothing about. this dam you mention is Wivenhoe dam, it is designed to hold approx 1.165 giga L for water supply with 1 1/2times that again for flood mitigation. it was at 100% supply storage on 4th Jan, with constant controlled releases since then it filled as much as 0.3 GL in one day alone, it is now at 180% capacity. the amount of rainfall we experienced here in Qld this last week was phenominal, with many areas receiving as much as 350mm in one day and some locations even having 250mm in a few short hours. The catchment extends for a total of 13,500km2. The dam was raised some years ago, but as you will find if you do your research, that combined rainfalls in previous months, december where i live, just north of brisbane, we had 675mm in December, we have had that again since the 1st Jan, with most since last Sunday, there was little chance brisbane was going to escape, especially given the frightening event that happenned in Toowoomab and flowed through the lockyer valley. Everyone will sit up and take notice when coking coal starts to get low in Japan's coal station reserves, or they can't get beef because we've none left to export. seems like the rest of the world is terribly insular when it comes to anything outside their own little world, sorry country. MAybe because Australia is a diverse, multicultural land that we get & expect news and information on other parts of the world, including tradgedies in Japan. So dont forget where your power comes from and a good deal of your food; not to mention where a good number of your exports go to.

My heart goes out to everyone there but it is Australia... was around for the 74 floods and glad this time they weren't so bad...

mrsynik: You should check out NHK News 7. You could also check out NHK World, as well as their website. It's on that as well.

You'll be able to see a lot of footage from the floods in Brazil as well as in Australia.
