DeSantis is another one of Trump's failures in handling Covid.

But Trump and his fellow 'elite' Republicans couldn't care less. They have access to excellent healthcare and the means to weather financial setbacks. They know this pandemic is hitting people at the lower ends of the economic scale hardest. The 'elites' disregard for their fellow citizens is even more blatantly obvious these days.

Yeah, only 130,000 Americans. Hardly anything to worry about right?

The virus is viewed by many as an "Act of God", but the fault doesn't lie in the stars, as people used to believe (influenza): mankind's ignorance and lack of respect for animals and nature are likely to blame for the release of the virus into the larger world. In America the blame for the out-of-control spread of covid-19 lies with the unscientific attitude and behavior of the general population, but the lack of leadership from Washington makes this pandemic and particularly the loss of life an "Act of Trump". Florida has a large retirement community and the virus can be expected to cut a swathe through the state aided by irresponsible behavior of the young generation and, again, failed political will on the part of the foolish politicians misguided by the thought "it can't happen here" in "the sunshine state".

What a disaster - all caused by DeSantis mirroring Trump and ignoring the pandemic....
Did you watch him bragging about how well he handled the virus several months ago....
“Part of the reason is that because you got a lot of people in your profession who waxed poetically for weeks and weeks about how Florida was going to be just like New York, wait two weeks and Florida’s going to be next just like Italy, wait two weeks. Well hell, we’re eight weeks away from that and it hasn’t happened,” DeSantis goes on, using a smug voice when recalling the naysayers before triumphantly proclaiming Florida has been spared of the virus’s vicious impact.
DeSantis then goes on to brag about the state’s low death rate compared to the Midwest, the Northeast and across the South, pointing to states like Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia...

DeSantis bragging with Pence smirking in the background , will haunt him for a long long time.
And what is up with people in Florida, ranting about masks, crowding beaches, bars.....
Has intelligent life left the place???

The governors who aren't mandating masks are cowards. They are offloading enforcement of mask requirements to low paid customer service workers.

The deaths are at an all time high and trending up.

Most people don't die immediately, but rather deteriorate over time. Death rates lag infections rates by about 8 weeks. Watch what happens later.
I can't believe I have to explain this. Sigh. My dog figured it out in minutes.

I can't understand why the same voices seek to minimalise the wiping out of a generation of Americans.
Is it a partisan thing, or just an anti-humanity stance?

In headlines around the world every day.
Trump and his supporters led the way with that. Now it’s a red state and it’s “liberal media!!!!”
It’s a record for Florida.
PTownsend
There are numerous reasons "Florida man" is a meme.

Liberal claim? What really matters is what the public think. Trump’s approval rating on coronavirus is going in the wrong direction.
Do you remember when his supporters here were trumpeting his good approval numbers on this in the past? I do.
Toasted Heretic
I wouldn't know, not being a liberal.
Personally, as he's the leader of the US, the buck stops with him. He spread lies, played down the threat of the virus, called it a hoax, used racist rhetoric to blame China, suggested quackery as a substitute to science and refused to wear a mask for months.
The article is on the disgraceful and deadly rise of deaths in Florida. He's certainly no saviour but it is a miracle that people are surviving his incompetence.
Toasted Heretic
Unlike right wing circles in 'murica, we have political nuance where I come from. Dead people are dead people, we try to prevent such tragedies like Florida etc and we don't have nutters having covid parties, saying masks are the devils work/communism etc.
Rather, we seek to keep the pandemic at bay by putting up with restrictions. By realising that having to curtail our lives temporarily is for the greater good of all.
And here's the thing, we don't see it as an attack on personal liberties. We see it as, common sense and for the benefit of our friends/neighbours/fellow countrymen and women. Whether they support one party or another. No matter what their beliefs are.
Because that's what being human is about. Trump cultists seem to have forgotten that.
Toasted Heretic
I think it's more about people from all walks of life wanting to see a charlatan who cares only about himself get his political and legal comeuppance.
And I'm not saying for one moment that Biden can solve America's deep-seated woes.
Trump's presidency is but a symptom of a far greater malaise.
The Democrats aren't necessarily the answer. Certainly not the old guard, at any rate.

No, there are plenty of capitalist societies with social safety nets.

It's not surprising but worrying nonetheless the far right have been so blatant in pushing their eugenicist beliefs. This era has seen more and more of them openly and freely claim they favor discriminatory policies. They're saying the quiet parts even louder.
smithinjapan
Good old DeSantis -- risking the lives of tens of thousands to stuff his head up Trump's backside. When he loses the next election or is forced to resign soon, his cries of "I never liked Trump" post-November should not only be ignored, the man should be criminally investigated for what he's done, and locked up.
PTownsend
The far right are no longer hiding their beliefs. They're further emboldened having ultra-nationalistic, far right authoritarians saying the same things and offering to protect them.
Toasted Heretic
Calling out Trump's disasterous handling of the pandemic is not mocking him. There's a difference. He can be mocked 24/7 (for numerous reasons) but when his inaction, lies and conspiracy theories have led to the deaths of thousands upon thousands - he needs intense scrutiny.
If it were Biden or Obama, most people would question their fitness for leadership.
But the far right cult will excuse anything their leader does or doesn't.
NCIS Reruns
This is just the beginning. Before the pandemic is over, Americans are going to pay a terrible price for their ignorance and obstinacy. Anybody with a job in the retail, airline, hospitality or food and beverage industry had better polish off their begging bowl. This is the cost of listening to antiscientific "advice" from populist politicians and right-wing media crackpots.
koujuke39
The Corona virus doesn't care about a person's political or religious beliefs. I hope science will beat out politics when it comes to parents and local government's decisions to restart schools. I hope that a vaccine is available for the entire world soon.
sunfunbun
Left/right....binary ideals have nothing to do with the dislike of Trump and his terrible presidency.
There are a ton of conservatives who know his handling of the virus and overall lies are causing worse Covid numbers in America
Even many of his staunch supporters have come around to say Trump’s done poorly as a president.
Those who don’t have any use for facts and reason, they just make things up, turn a crazed blind eye, and pretend Trump is an adequate president.
But he’s not nearly that, he’s the worst president ever, hands down and it isn’t even close, as the virus enhances its vicious spread thru America.
Garthgoyle
Waiting for the all-knowledgeable posters that state the virus lethality is proven to be getting lower day by day, that's scientifically proven that masks don't prevent any virus and that they're just an attempt to take take away and/or destroy their "human-rights." Who wants to go on a BLM, anti-police or anti-lockdown march? Or perhaps a "safe social-distancing" retreat in South Beach?

Trump’s approval rating on handling corona is going south...
PTownsend
That's the first I've heard anyone say that. Or is this another case of a Trump supporter unable to find a single positive thing to say about their Trump and instead make up a story hoping to take the thread off topic and have it shut down.
Toasted Heretic
The whole world hates Trump, mate. Not because it's "liberal", rather because he's tried to start wars, pissed all over the peace process in Israel, pulled out of the climate accord, been racist to millions of people, cosied up to dictators like Putin etc and oh yeah, is a self-admitted sexual offender. And of course, the icing on this multi-layered towering inferno of a toilet cake is his zero leadership in dealing with the virus.
The only good thing is that one way or another, the virus will put an end to his presidency. He'll be long gone before covid 19 is.

It always amazes me to see Trump supporters post something without ever reading the article...
The numbers come at the end of a grim, record-breaking week as Florida reported 514 fatalities — an average of 73 per day. Three weeks ago, the state was averaging 30 deaths per day. Since the pandemic began in March, 4,346 people have died in Florida of COVID-19, the state says.
Record breaking week in deaths - 514...
Average of 73 per day now vs 30 three weeks ago...
Largest daily number of infections than any other state - 15,299...
And the worst is yet to come...
And DeSantis was out there bragging two months ago about how well the state was doing...
Electing a Repub is the same as signing your death certificate...
drlucifer
The number of infected is high and alarming however the exceptionally high number of testing performed should be commended, think for a second if 5,000 test was done, the number of infected won't be more than 3,000. That is why the number of test is very important and can't be downplayed and overlooked. Here we are in completely in the blind due to the extremely low number of test. Imagine Osaka pref 8M pop 800 test a test a day, hyogo 5M pop 90 test a day. Even tokyo with a pop of 14M that recently is boasting of increased testing is doing 3500 test a day, a drop in the ocean compared to Florida and even NY 65,000 test.

The virus has a potential to kill far more than the already terrible death toll. But hey, as long as Disney stays open and people can have their parties and beach excursions, it's all hunky dory.

Unlike the racists , we did not differentiate between the political affiliations of the states people died in.
Most of the liberal states seem to have got their act together and reduced infection and death rates.
Is that difficult for the racists to understand????
Blacklabel
All the people here bemoaning the "politicization" of deaths only seem to know the name "Trump" and seem to only know the names of US states run by Republicans.
Half the deaths in the USA, without CA.
Blacklabel
No, liberals “disapproved” in both situations.
The media needs scaremongering to manipulate the moderates/independents back and forth on approval. Trump had overall 49% approval once before, so the 8% who don’t like him now can like him again later.
Liberals hated Trump just as bad pre corona as they do now and as they will when corona is gone.

The only good thing is that one way or another, the virus will put an end to his presidency..
That's the thing, the radical left see's this as a god send opportunity to get rid of trump, all those gullible rioters, looters. arsonists were basically used to spread the virus, the more the virus spreads the more difficult for Trump to focus on the election..
Blacklabel
Yes, as not a single person died of confirmed COVID in NYC the last 2 days.
as 45 people in a state of 21 million residents is a media narrative.
Ike-in-Tokyo-from-89
The only thing worse than actually becoming ill from COVID-19 is ....
Dying.
Perhaps Governor DeSantis aspires to see as many dead as possible, but he’s got a long way to go to catch up to NY and other states.
As of July 11:
NY : 32,029 NJ : 15,525 MA : 8,310
IL : 7,372 CT : 4,348
FL : 4,241.
Which governor is doing best?
Blacklabel
now do zero deaths in NYC today and only 2 "probable" yesterday,
Blacklabel
Says “not a liberal”. Sure sounds like a mishmash of what liberals say.
Blacklabel
Just New York City by itself, not even the state of New York. Now compare that to Florida’s 45 deaths.
Blacklabel
well the liberal claim is that Trump is personally responsible for every death in every state. Especially in the liberal ones where you cant blame a Republican governor.
So when there are No deaths, he is also personally responsible for that too, right?
CaptDingleheimer
Capitalism: where money for all social programs originates.
Blacklabel
It’s a “you don’t gleefully post death counts when it’s liberal run states” thing.
no deaths in NYC today at all. Zero. Same as yesterday but they later added 2 “probable” deaths.
kyronstavic
You're welcome to pack up and move to one of those socialist paradises you seem to be yearning for. You know, the ones that have been responsible for 100 million plus deaths over the last century.
Kind of puts this virus in perspective doesn't it?
Blacklabel
there were no mocking or political comments negative to liberals when 30,000 people died in one state run by a liberal.
Just blamed Trump and looked for a Repub run state to criticize, right? Now that this state has zero deaths today, Trump had nothing to do with it.
When Florida becomes ok, back to Arizona. Then maybe Texas, then hope that the 4th of July caused something in North Dakota. its a political death count game, with the goal to exclude NY/CA/MI/NJ from anything, despite those being the highest death count states.
Blacklabel
the death rate is still low. So are the number of cases if you consider the large population. Liberal media wouldn’t even be mentioning this state if the governor was a liberal.
