Wouldn't be surprised to see more of these things happening.

Very sad....

It actually reminds me of something my aunt said when she was a teacher, which is that a lot of kids attempt suicide for the purpose of getting caught (saved). Maybe this guy broadcasted it for that reason, but no one arrived in time.

Internet is really a bizarre world where monsters or ghosts really exist but no police there!

I feel vary sorry for him. I've suffered from depression for years and I've said many many times, "depression kills."
I know the post says that he suffered from bipolar disorder. These diseases that effort the emotions and reasoning are horrible.
I feel for him. < :-)

This will be the next big thing here in Japan

What a tragic story - and it illustrates the need for some policing of these social network websites. They bear a heavy responsibility for this, and it also illustrates the kinbd of sick perverts who use these sites - the kind of people who egged on this unfortunate young man to commit sucicide online so they could fulfil their deprave lusts by watching. American society is at a new low - and not just economically, as this story proves. America is a nation in social, moral and economic decline. People are looking to President Obama to save them - I hope they are not disappointed.

No, it demonstrates that a very small percentage of people are sick, which is something we already know. Taking away the sites won't change that.

Realist what a drama queen you are today. Come now. I think he would have done it some other way if not online. Maybe jumping off a building where he may have hit some innocent person on the ground like in Tokyo last year I believe it was. People who are depressed and want to do themselves in are the responsibility of their family not the public who can go and see anything online. He was the sick one for wanting to show such a personal choice as ending it all. If I were in that situation I don't think I'd want to share it. He was sick and paid the ultimate price for his sickness. others die of cancer or something.

Sorry, but I don't think the site in question was technically an SNS (as they've come to be known). Biggs' MySpace account, on the other hand, IS part of an SNS. Anyway, my point is that you cannot say 'these sites ought to be closed' without pointing the finger at other sites, then at the internet as a whole, then at computers, then at clubs, etc. It's not the sites themselves that promote this kind of thing. Closing down SNS would not accomplish a thing towards avoiding this kind of behaviour.
All that being said, it is a tragedy that in this day and age this would happen. But again, it's not limited to the internet and/or such sites: there was a man who jumped off a builing in Britain a few weeks ago when egged on by the people people, whom I might add jostled elbows to get cell phone pics of the shattered corpse. Fingers need to be pointed at society, not the technology itself.

That tricky English language with its silent Fs!

This news makes me sick! I hope this horrible news does not make killing yourself "live" over the internet the next new fad in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter. I can not imagine the saddness this boy's parents must be going through. I would like to know if this kid had any friends? Somebody to hear him out?

How sad and disturbing. Realist, I don't know what more the site admin could have done. They notified the police as soon as they were informed. It's a pity that it was several hours too late. No site could possibly have the manpower to check on what all the users are up to.

TOTALLY AGREED! I wouldn't be surprised to hear such things happening in numbers here sooner or later!!!
