Fox News veteran Shepard Smith quits, says he hopes 'facts will win the day'

Shepard Smith, the chief news anchor of Fox News and a sometime critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, announced on Friday he was quitting the network after 23 years.

In an unexpected on-air statement at the end of his daily"Shepard Smith Reporting" show, Smith said he had asked to leave.

His farewell message ended with the hope that "the truth will always matter."

"Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News. After requesting that I stay, they obliged. Under our agreement I won't be reporting elsewhere, at least in the near future," Smith said.

"Even in our currently polarized nation, it's my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter, that journalism and journalists will survive," Smith said.

Smith, who is also managing editor of the network's breaking news unit, has been one of the few senior journalists on conservative-leaning Fox News to criticize Trump.

In March, he took issue with Trump's criticism of the late Republican Senator John McCain, and in August Smith spoke out about the "unmistakable rise of white nationalism and white racism in America" which Democrats say Trump has not done enough to discourage.

Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the U.S. media as "the enemy of the people," has lashed out publicly against Shepard.

"Watching Fake News CNN is better than watching Shepard Smith, the lowest rated show on @FoxNews," Trump tweeted in August.

Smith has been with Fox News, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation, since it was launched in 1996.

Fox News president Jay Wallace in a statement called him"one of the premier newscasters of his generation."

"While this day is especially difficult as his former producer, we respect his decision and are deeply grateful for his immense contributions to the entire network,” Wallace said.

Fox "News" just lost one of the very few people it had that possessed any integrity. Good on you, Mr. Smith.

You're fired.

You're fired.

One can't be fired if they've resigned.

Thank God, now we can all have peace. Good move on FNC.

For some truth don't matter much!

Thank God, now we can all have peace.

You're going to need it.

Thank God, now we can all have peace. Good move on FNC.

But isn’t Smith a good counterweight to the likes of Hannity who went on stage supporting Trump?

Fox "News" just lost one of the very few people it had that possessed any integrity.

The other one with any integrity is Donna Brazile, right? You know, the one who gave Hillary the debate questions.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

For some truth don't matter much!

Yup.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

After watching a few minutes of Hannity, Carlson, and Ingraham over the past week, I can understand why Shep couldn't take any more of the pure, unadulterated BS...

Trumpers just lost one of the few remaining voices of sanity on an insane network...

Rupert must have figured with all the damning info coming out on Trump, he couldn't have someone who would actually report the true facts.

Expect to hear more Obama, Hillary, Biden, Deep State, Bigfoot, QAnon, Flat Earth, Area 51 Aliens, etc....

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Thank God, now we can all have peace. Good move on FNC.

Good move for Fox "News" to allow Smith to resign? You clearly don't care about objective reporting.

The other one with any integrity is Donna Brazile, right? You know, the one who gave Hillary the debate questions.

You people can't control your obsessive compulsions to WHATABOUT HILLARY. Way too funny that you think this is appropriate in critical discourse.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

But isn’t Smith a good counterweight to the likes of Hannity who went on stage supporting Trump?

Not really. You have other liberals that listen present the news and listen to reason and facts. Shep wasn’t one of them. Shep was also a hard news guy, so it wasn’t his job to give his opinion, if he wanted to do that, then he would have needed to talk to management and get a show in the prime time slot then it would be ok. If Ailes were alive Shep would have been in trouble.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Good move for Fox "News" to allow Smith to resign? You clearly don't care about objective reporting.

I do. Just not from hard news guys. Want to voice your opinion, change your job description and leave that time slot.

You people can't control your obsessive compulsions to WHATABOUT HILLARY.

do you people can control your obsessive compulsion’s to Trump and Russia Russia and collusion, collusion

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

If Ailes were alive Shep would have been in trouble.

Ailes was a disgraceful man who set the low tone for this appalling network.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I do. Just not from hard news guys. Want to voice your opinion, change your job description and leave that time slot.

You care about objective reporting, but not from hard news people? This means you want objective reporting from opinion reporters. Smooth.

do you people can control your obsessive compulsion’s to Trump and Russia Russia and collusion, collusion

False analogy given Donny's the president and he's sided with Russia over our intelligence agencies. Smooth.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Ailes was a disgraceful man who set the low tone for this appalling network.

Yeah, liberals would say that, I disagree.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

You care about objective reporting, but not from hard news people?

Yes, but No, that’s not their job description or in their contract.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Fox News isn't available in Japan. So how can people comment on a station which isn't available?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Objective reporting is reporting the facts, which is hard news. I though you were a journalist.

I am, that’s WHY I’m saying what I just said, but I’m telling you, Shep went over his pay grade in not reporting straight news and leaving the opinions to the Prime time hosts. Again, if he wanted to do that, fine. Change your job description and time slot, if not, stick to your job description and report the news. Harris Faulkner does it as well as Julie Banderas in their perspective time slots.

Rodger Ailes a sexual abuser and vile human being.

I am

You've told us you were retired. Which is it? Please chose one and stick with it.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Imo blokes like Smith are part of the problem. The whole us media circus has always been more about the anchor than the news.

Fox News isn't available in Japan. So how can people comment on a station which isn't available?

Hmmm...there’s this amazing device called a satellite....

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Thank God, now we can all have peace. Good move on FNC.

It was Smith’s decision, not FNC’s. They begged him to stay.

By “we can have peace”, you mean “finally, dissenting voices are being silenced”.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Hmmm...there’s this amazing device called a satellite....

Please inform me how that works in Japan. Fox News from which satellite?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It was Smith’s decision, not FNC’s. They begged him to stay.

They didn’t beg him, they wanted him to stay of course because he is a cash cow for the network that’s indisputable for his time slot, but there were a lot of internal problems with him and other anchors, personality conflicts etc. and he was feeling more isolated politically and socially, it happens on every network. CNN is the king of news doo revolving for years now.

By “we can have peace”, you mean “finally, dissenting voices are being silenced”.

No, because the network has a bunch of dissenting liberal voices compared to CNN or my former network where being a conservative or opinionated one can put you on the endangered list.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I wonder if there's a connection between Smith resigning around the time Rupert Murdoch met with Trump's Attorney General (the other one, not Rudy G).

The president’s attorney general, known for pushing foreign officials to help discredit the Russia investigation, met with the head of Fox News, where some anchors have begun to speak out against Trump.

Can't find any online info on being able to access Fox News from a satellite in Japan?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

They didn’t beg him, they wanted him to stay of course because he is a cash cow for the network

So he must not have been as bad as you claim.

No, because the network has a bunch of dissenting liberal voices

That get shutdown whenever Fox "News" feels like shitting them down.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Can't find any online info on being able to access Fox News from a satellite in Japan?

Me neither. I know you can get BBC and CNN on Skyperfect but I didn’t know Fox was available. I’ve also stayed in countless business hotels over the years in Japan and I’m pretty sure I never saw it alongside BBC and CNN on the channel options which were often there.

Bass, let us know.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What? Lol. Anyway, it works for me that’s all I can say.

Then which satellite channel are you using. SkyPerfect and HirakiTV don't have Fox News nor does Jcom

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Me neither. I know you can get BBC and CNN on Skyperfect but I didn’t know Fox was available.

Not on Skyperfect, you’re right.

I’ve also stayed in countless business hotels over the years in Japan and I’m pretty sure I never saw it alongside BBC and CNN on the channel options which were often there.

Because it’s not.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Farewell, Shep. You were one of the very few over there who had integrity, and you showed heart, too. I wish you well in the next stage of your career.

It must have been excruciating to try and do straight journalism in a propaganda outlet. Fox's loss.

Now let's find out if Bill Barr's meeting with Rupert Murdoch had anything to do with it.

if you are such a supporter of Fox News inform us how we can watch it from Japan. Simple question simple answer.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Please inform me how that works in Japan. Fox News from which satellite?

What? Lol. Anyway, it works for me that’s all I can say.

Would it work for anyone else?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Because maybe its not actually correct and you can't access Fox News from Japan which I have just confirmed with Fox News.

I can, but I don’t need to give out that info.

Shall we just assume you, like the rest of us, can’t watch Fox in Japan on satellite and just ignore your 10:56 post?

You can assume whatever you like. I’m perfectly fine with that

Put another way: I've been caught out again pushing a falsehood. At least you didn't claim to have already told us how we can get Fox "News" in Japan, which is something you often do when you cannot back up one of your assertions with facts.

No, no falsehoods. I said, what I said and if someone doesn’t believe it, quite alright. I won’t answer to the haters what they want to hear. If you ask me a question, I give you an honest answer that’s all, nothing more.

Time to change the channel

I guess at NBC Brian Williams wasn't the only one not telling the truth?

The removal of a balanced voice results in a louder echo chamber for the pubs.

And he still has a job, but they need someone for their nightly news. Anyway, one less loudmouth Shep is a big win for the network, long overdo.

There isn't a single person who can get Fox News here not even the military bases which have also stopped ESPN.

Spot on. I only know Fox from posted clips, but I did notice that one. They always seemed less in line with the globalist propaganda chorus, but apparently have changed their policy recently. George Soros must be smiling.

There's this thing called Youtube. The anti-Trumpers really ought to watch my links, they might learn something. Like this one:

That’s not quite entirely true.

Could you cite one example of something that Hannity, Carlson and Ingraham said that was pure unadulterated BS? We'll be waiting. In the meantime:

Trump speaks to media during meeting with Chinese officials

Maybe Hannity and Carlson quit and make a 24/7 H&C network. They will never turn on Trump. What do you think? It seems FOX News is going down the toilet. But Hannity and Carlson are 100% loyal and Trump gets all his advice from them. Forget FOX News. FOX News is finished but Hannity, Carlson, and Friends can live on.

Gingrich is a certified nut job just like Rudy - there's a good reason he was tossed out of Congress in disgrace....

Newsweek? Oh...lol....

As I've been saying for the past several days, the Trumpers here have really lost their mojo - it seems all the evidence against Trump has put them in a funk and they're resigned to his defeat - they just offer one word replies or rhetorical questions that have nothing of substance.

Pitiful - but we can all understand...he confessed to a quid-pro-quo in the transcript, his crazy criminal lawyer is melting down, and officials are jumping ship left and right. They've finally realized Trump is toast.

Rupert Murdoch's son and head of Fox News is not as enamored with Trump as much as his father was

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It would be a commendable move if it had not taken so very very long.

My forgiveness for the damage he has helped do to the nation will require a sincere apology and some solid action against that foul network.....not that I think the other networks are clean mind you its just the FOX is so clearly the worst.
