Both Macron’s party and Le Pen’s have failed to do as well as they hoped. These elections are always bad news for the incumbent party but they did even worse than expected. The left hardly made a showing and as always was divided.

There are many aspects to the story but perhaps the most significant one that throws in to question any analysis of all the others is the abstention rate of about 70%. That is a message from the electorate that all the parties need to think hard on!
