A very interesting interview and report from The Scotsman newspaper:
(Scotsman)- ONE of Afghanistan's most powerful warlords has urged America not to send more troops, insisting there are enough to beat the Taleban already – if the rest of Nato simply pulled its weight.
Ismail Khan, the self-styled Emir of western Afghanistan, and three-decade veteran of fighting the Taleban and the Russians, was particularly scathing about the Italian forces, in his hometown of Herat.
He said: "Most of the time they sit in their bases. We don't need more Americans. The troops that we have already – the Italians, if they were more active, if they fought, then the situation would get better."

It took a great deal of effort not to make any snide comments about this headline...

The French will do just fine. Brave soldiers with a rich history.

"militants launch quick attacks, then disappear into hillside villages"
These hillside villages need to be surrounded and blockaded until the militants are found. The militants might just turn out to be the "villagers."

I agree.

Three-quarters of all civilian deaths in Afghanistan are at the hands of the Taliban. I hope for the sake of the Afghan people that this road makes it easier to bring order to the countryside and allow the Afghans to enjoy some of the peace we sometimes take for granted.

Hope they do a better job than the Germans...

These next few months (years) will be hell in Afghanistan, but the infrastructure for this North-South pipeline must be built and invading Iran would be far worse.
-the warlords time has come to an end and total control is necessary in order to transport this oil from the north. This is ObamaChange.

Don't misunderstand the fact. The French troops are acting as the member of NATO. They are fighting since the day one with the other members of NATO. The NATO allies are fighting against Taliban.

I'm glad to see France assist in the Afghanistan War. < :-)
MrUSA
Now all the people talking about "surrender monkeys" and "freedom fries" can shut up.

It's good that other countries are shouldering the burden of fighting in Afghanistan. If it's seen as a US only war, then it's only one enemy to defeat for the Taliban, but if it's many then it may be very demoralizing for them.

Quote: "The AP reporter saw one man dressed like a farmer fire a rocket-propelled grenade at the French troops, then drop his weapon and run into a field where he disappeared into a group of villagers."
Typical, but they can do this as they use fear tactics to bully the local populace into submission. Then when they get hit, they are innocent civilians. Who wants to fight with a bunch of psychopathic chameleon liars?
