Brenton Tarrant displays no grounding or concept of the extremities of grief, or losing a loved one or any of the desolation and loneliness one of the worst experiences any family can experience or have to endure.
On our first year at University one political science module was devoted to deontology, utilitarianism, and virtue and applied ethics.
Basically, the moral political ethics that define a nations moral codes/to renounce war and capital punishment.
Brenton Tarrant is a empty shell.
Is it not possible that Brenton Tarrant was not indoctrinated into a state of mind that weaponizes an intense urge to kill?

Something that the judge should take into account. Once you are dead, that's it, an eternal sleep from which you don't awake. The pain is more on the loved ones, who bare the pain for the rest of their lives. There are as much the victims.

while I can’t speak for the NZ justice system, in the US, victim impact statements aren’t just for closure. They serve a practical purpose for the prosecution: They show the jury the terrible human cost of the defendant’s actions, bringing the crime out of the realm of abstraction and hopefully hammering home the need to find the defendant guilty and punish them to the fullest extent possible

Yes, well, I’d hate to see the ramblings of an Islamophobic spree killer who described himself as “a regular White man....who decided to take a stand to ensure a future for my people” (a little close to the infamous “14 words”) - and who flashed a white power symbol at his first hearing - be mischaracterized and misquoted.
That’d be a real outrage, wouldn’t it?

That's because the Biden campaign quickly disavowed him, calling him "absolutely repugnant."
Your boy Trump welcomes QAnon and defended neo nazis in North Carolina as "good people".

We can all give thanks to Allah that we don't have to walk in this murderer's shoes. He is no devil, just a poor soul who lost his way in life and now must accept his punishment living in the eternal hell of loneliness, isolation and banishment from the community of his fellows until the end of his days, unless he exits with a suicide or is himself murdered in prison. What a tragic waste of so many lives cut short because of one person's psychopathic impulses!

I was thinking that maybe he will take the opportunity to reaffirm his beliefs and drive it hard to the people
i@n
Was that the reason he chose New Zealand?
If he is gunning for a possibilityofparole or lighter sentence then he will show some remorse and/or probably ask for forgiveness and understanding when he addresses the court/people

Tarrant is a bigot, emboldened by the global climate where bigotry is encouraged even rewarded .
A life in prison, no parole and limiting his interaction with other people is what is required.

On the positive side this evil act has cemented Muslims and indeed all minority immigrants firmly in New Zealand society proving what a terminal failure militant white supremacy is.
Yes I believe they have

minimum sentencing guidelines are life with NO PAROLE. I hope he eats himself hollow with guilt in another 4 decades and dies a sad lonely and remorseful death.

I was hoping POSTUS wouldn't be mentioned in this thread. No chance.
Salaam and Aroha!

New Zealand is a tolerant and forgiving Country. In every respect in all walks of life.
There will be no hanging Tarrant from the nearest lamp post.

It is important to understand the relevance of victim impact statements/panels mean to families that have suffered immeasurable damage

Pressing for sentence?
An examination of the New Zealand crown prosecutor’s role in sentencing
Prosecutors are among the most powerful actors in any criminal justice system. Their exercise of discretion, however, has not been subjected to the same level of public and empirical scrutiny as other parts of the criminal justice system.

Will Tarrant need to testify in open court?
Can Tarrant be forced?
The guilty plea could be interpreted as a means to negate nullify any means of attestation.

Misquote. The quote say symbol of renewed identy and common purpose, not supremacy. And it does not state anywhere he was "influenced by Trump". In fact, he answers the question if he is a Trump supporter with "Dear God No", just like many posters here would.

The fury could come after he addresses the court.

Where did he state that? Do you have a reference for that?

Closure for the survivors. It is the least they are owed.
An inspiring article I read was from a mother whose son was killed who said, "I no longer hate him. I pity him." Being able to say that to his face is therapy before he is locked away forever.

I think it's a good idea for victims and their families. They are not under any obligation to take part but if someone in my family were killed by such a nutter, I'd want a chance to look at him in the flesh and say what I thought. As difficult as it may be, even if he ignored me or laughed, it'd still be something I'd want to do.
albaleo
I wondered the same. Then I saw some of the statements on TV, and I was surprised how calm they were. None of the "fury" mentioned in the headline. A common theme was that the event had strengthened their faith. If that sends a message to other potential killers about the effect of their actions, then it will have done some good.

His face is very scary and ugly.I wonder what he sees when he looks at the mirror. No wonder he suffers from inferiority complex.

He clearly stated that he was influenced by Trump. SMH
Also, I thought it was decided that his face and name would not be published to avoid giving him notoriety. What changed?
Ego Sum Lux Mundi
In his mind it's a war, and he is just a soldier in it. Not sure he's going to be shamed or give a damn what they say.
