G20 leaders will denounce the use of, or any threat to use, nuclear weapons, according to an early draft seen by Reuters.

The reasonable among those leaders will earnestly denounce the use of and the threat of using nuclear weapons, which is good to hear, but fat lot of good if Putin and Lavrov won't go along with it. Putin and Lavrov are the current era's Nixon-Kissinger, Hitler-Ribentoff, maybe Stalin-Molotov. All shameful males bent on maintaining their power and willing to make the world even more unsafe for everyone else. But after all of the lies told by Putin and Lavrov, only their most loyal lackies might believe them if they denounce the threat of using nuclear weapons. They and the Kremlin seem content making the world even less safe by continuing to run their leaky, aging gas station of a nation, further polluting and poisoning the planet.

The invasion and reports of atrocities warrants global condemnation.

In addition, there should be global condemnation of the west for not living up to the signed agreement during the fall of the Soviet Union. The agreement was that the west would not expand NATO to expand the sphere of influence to surround the new Russian federation.

Seven countries were added after the agreement.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

Hang on they are considering not actually condemning just yet, it might take a few more thousand or 200 more tones of flesh before a decision can be put to a working party that will consider forwarding the idea of a discussion panel that will recommend to the invested parties a course of action they might consider.

there should be global condemnation of the west for not living up to the signed agreement during the fall of the Soviet Union. The agreement was that the west would not expand NATO to expand the sphere of influence to surround the new Russian federation.

There was no signed agreement or treaty regarding NATO or including new members, or refusing new members.

Seven countries were added after the agreement.

Seven countries joined after the fall of the USSR, who wanted closer relationships with the EU and wanted the safety NATO provides from coercion and threats by Russia. Those nations have the right to associate with whomever they like. If they have no wish to be in Moscow's sphere of influence that is entirely up to them. If not NATO then a new alliance under a different name that is identical to NATO. Would that have made it all better? Russia has no right to stop nations wishing to associate and not wanting to be under Russian influence. They had decades of that in the Soviet Union and decided they didnt like it, it was not for them, they moved to friendships with nations who had similar desires for freedom and democracy.

Most in the G20 strongly condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Even without a joint statement by all members, they should make a majority statement covering the barbaric war started by Russia for territorial expansion.

After all the death and destruction meted out by Ukraine's "Big Brother Bear" it's a bit rich and rather late to come with a condemnation that is sure to be followed by a snail's pace resort to anything that might be termed "action".

Useless, the UN security council meant NOTHING to Putin and I doubt if the G19 would.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Well it's about time that the freedom-loving democracies of the world stood up to the Fuhrer Putin and his pathetic acolytes and let him have it straight that the madness in Ukraine has to stop.

Even the British Prime Minister Sunak declared face-to-face with Lavrov that Russia must get the hell out of Ukraine Now.

I think a special mention should have been made loud-and-clear of the Russian's new method of dealing with retreating and unwilling Russian soldiers, namely their bludgeoning to death with Sledgehammers - honestly, I couldn't believe this til I looked into it, and this is prescribed by a guy known as 'Putins Chef' from the Wagner group....... this, in the 21st Century.

Russia is now a totalitarian Orwellian and truly gruesome state - roll on the Revolution there.

The US created the G20 when it's previous creation (The G6/7/8) non longer had the financial clout to force America's economic policy wishes on the rest of the world.

Of course it rigged the membership to ensure that the majority would be vassals of America.

That members other than China and Russia aren't rubber stamping America's language is the surprise for Biden.

People should use the power of the Internet to educate themselves re the agreement of February 9, 1990 that NATO would not "move one centimeter east."

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Is it progress to reiterate what you have said before or to recite what others have said? If it is, how much exactly is it...

Putin the Pitbull with no teeth stay home. LOL once a powerful man reduced to hiding in his dog house to afraid to come out.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The gathering of evidence for future war-crimes trials has been continuing for a while now, and once they proceed and convictions are obtained, then the question of reparations from Russia can be pursued.

The UN has been incredibly ineffective to date in regards all of the horrendous atrocities which have been (and continue to be) committed, and it's incumbent on all the democratic countries in the world to step up the pressure on them to act in a much more dynamic and professional way.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

to focus on action to resolve global economic problems like inflation, and food and energy security.

Global economic problems = caused by Russia.

Inflation = caused by Russia.

Food insecurity = caused by Russia.

Energy insecurity = caused by Russia.

So, it seems Russia is at the heart of the issues that the G20 should be solving. Only fools wouldn't see those connections.

Vladimir Putin must be stopped NOW. Before Tokio = Hiroshima+Nagasaki,

Washington = Nagasaki+Hiroshima, London = Hiroshima+Nagasaki, Paris=Nagasaki+Hiroshima, Moscow=Hiroshima+Nagasaki, Berlin=Nagasaki+Hiroshima, Singapore=Hiroshima+Nagasaki, Beijing=Nagasaki+Hiroshima, Sydney=Hiroshima+Nagasaki, Delhi=Nagasaki+Hiroshima, Etc.Etc.Etc.

And..... Planet Earth... becomes... A... BALL... OF... FIRE... LIKE...THE SUN...

“Well it's about time that the freedom-loving democracies of the world…”

Just a reminder that Ukraine is not a freedom-loving democracy. It’s an autocratic regime like many countries.

But all countries should stand against war and invasion.

Peter Neil:

Ukraine is a democracy, and their citizens are certainly freedom-loving.

*They've voted in several elections since 1991, including for their President and their Legislature, although it may not fit the exact model of USA, or European countries, or the Indian style of democracy.

Gurzuf:

I'm in no way exaggerating the words of the British Prime Minister Sunak in the way he has the guts to state to Lavrov publicly that the Russians must leave Ukraine, in the setting of the G20 forum. No other world leader has publicly rebuked Labrov (and by implication, his master, Putin) in this way, something which should be applauded, not derided.

It's an indication of his no-nonsense style that he feels comfortable facing-down a bully.

Instead of looking for more pacifist ways to achieve a cessation of hostilities, with these resolutions what they are going to do is escalate tensions and continue the war, in addition to creating a terrible environment that will bring us closer to a possible third world war.

Why don't they first condemn US interventionism and invasions around the world carrying their "democracy, freedom and goodwill??? Afghanistan, Iran, and the Condor plan in Latin America are an example of a long list that can be watched in the report RL30172 of the United States Congressional Research Service on International Relations..

In addition, there should be global condemnation of the west for not living up to the signed agreement during the fall of the Soviet Union. The agreement was that the west would not expand NATO to expand the sphere of influence to surround the new Russian federation.

Just a reminder that Ukraine is not a freedom-loving democracy. It’s an autocratic regime like many countries.

Finally someone with common sense..

Let's remember that the troubles in Ukraine started with the coup against the last truly democratically elected government be

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

The 'elections' since the coup installed regime took over have featured the rejection of any votes from the Eastern provinces of Ukraine where the population rejected the legitimacy of the coup, which, completely coincidentally, resulted in a majority of the votes the regime bothered to count supporting people who see the coup as legitimate.

You can designate that as democracy, you just can't expect those excluded from the process to view it as bestowing legitimacy on the regime.

Gurzuf

And Lavrov is not a bully. Lavrov is a highly and well-educated intellectual

Lavrov, 'the intellectual', that said: Russia is hitting only military infrastructure, Ukraine is governed by a pro-Nazi regime (and that Hitler was part Jewish), Bucha’s horrors are ‘a fake’.

Let's remember that the troubles in Ukraine started with the coup against the last truly democratically elected government be

An uprising by the people of Ukraine. They weren't actually trying to topple the government, just get their wishes heard about joining the EU.

But when Yanukovych countered by shooting protestors, things went awry and Yanukovych fled to Russia.

Elections since Yanukovych fled to Russia have indeed been democratic.

Xi told French President Emmanuel Macron during a bilateral meeting that China advocated a ceasefire in Ukraine and peace talks, Chinese state media reported.

Supporting Russia in pursuit of core interest is contradictory to a ceasefire, LOL, can any one take the CCP seriously.

So much context, nuance and history missing from any media story on Ukraine, this is why it is mostly propaganda. No mention of the fact that Indonesia is now buying oil from Russia. The US wants Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire or peace treating to allow the West time to re-arm and train Ukraine. Word is that Ukraine has run out of young men to draft into the army and is now drafting 45+ men. Russia will be wary of agreeing to any ceasefire as Ukraine/US has not honored the Minsk accords and is therefore unlikely to honor any treaty.
