Why there were no US marines showing up in the soil of Libya? Does that means America has betrayed 'people seeking freedom' or they believes American lives were more valuable than the Libyans? Gadhafi was a criminal he was responsible for the PAN AM mid air explosions, he should be 'arrested' for mass murdering etc. And why did the 'world police' refrained to take actions? So they are no longer making committment to what they believes or a new calculations of oil and blood?

We must all follow Egypt's (Ghandi/MLK) example and not give in to the chaos which brings in tyranny.

Ghandi and MLK held religious beliefs the vast majority of Egyptians consider heretical. Aint gonna happen.

It makes me sick to see these Libs trying to start a another war. Stop the chaos/wars and peacefully protest for "real change." Power to the people like in Egypt where they are still trying to get rid of the criminal military junta. We must all follow Egypt's (Ghandi/MLK) example and not give in to the chaos which brings in tyranny.

Solidaritea-Reuters is a pro western newspaper, what can we expect?libyans should learn from iraq, the country is worse than before the invasion. Anyway, who listens to the west anymore.Libyans will solve their problems・

As far as i know, they haven't asked so far for any kind of western assistance

There are reports (Reuters) of some of the Libyan anti-Quaddaffee forces begging George Bush (sr) to intervene. Like 99.9999 percent of non-Americans they have no idea of how my country works.

France should attack and liberate Libya and then no one would take notice or even care.

Dreams of a colonial past? I think Libyans themselves must solve their own problems. As far as i know, they haven't asked so far for any kind of western assistance.

Triumvere, my guess is that is happening even as I type, but it very much needs to stay on the hush-hush so that xenophobia does not tip any weight towards Qaddafi's side. This is an incredibly complex situation, and I'm afraid the US faces a greater chance of screwing things up by being more activist than by being more passive.

Any day now, I expect to hear Gadhafi announce his candidacy for governor of Tokyo...

From what I've read Gadhafi's hold on power isn't much. It's too bad western powers have so far taken a hands off position, because with just a little more help he would be history.

Perhaps the western powers have finally learned that the enemy of my enemy is not necessary my friend, especially when it comes to the Middle East.

World put out the fire in Libya. Save more lives, don't make the fire bigger.

A far cry from "Give me liberty or give me death!"

Most of the country wants Gadhafi gone, and many are willing to fight for it. Gadahfi is bombing his own people from the air, and firing into crowds of peaceful protestors. Really, you aren't going to get a better case for an international intervention.

That said, setting up a "no fly zone" is much more difficult than one might think. It means going in and taking out all the airfields an AA positions. It means going to war.

Ideally, the UN security council would step in with a resolution, but global politics being what they are, this is unlikely to happen. So, a no-fly zone is unlikely.

I say: arm the rebels. My assessment is, given the right tools, the Libyans can liberate themselves. That means guns and ammunition. A few man-portable SAMs should be enough to deal with Gadhafi's air power.

For the West the most important thing is to maintain high oil production levels in Libya. A long lasting chaos in Libya will make oil prices spike globally.

Quoting from energybulletin.net

The current situation for oil production in Libya looks like this: When the unrest began the production level was 1.6 Mb (million barrels)/d (day). The international oil companies such as Italy’s Eni (that produces 250,000 barrels/day, b/d, in Libya) and Spain’s Rapsol (producing 45,000 b/d) have closed down their production. German Winterhall (100,000 b/d) and French Total (60,000 b/d) are thought to be producing only a fraction of former volumes. Deliveries of natural gas to Italy which account for approximately 10% of Italy’s imports are closed off. On March 1 the head of Libya’s National Oil Corporation said that oil production had been halved (although by that he could mean either that half of Libya’s production is stopped or that half of the company’s production is stopped). They will keep producing for as long as they can but their international expertise has left the country. International Energy Agency tells us that the production is down with 800,000 to 1,200,000 b/d.
