Gadhafi warns of 'bloody war' if foreign powers enter Libya

Wow, "Thousands of Libyans will die" line sounds exactly like a hostage situation. Gadhafi will get whats coming to him and it may be quite soon.

The Libyan people are going to hang this guy from the rafters. He certainly deserves it.

Intervention is a tough call. You're damned if you do(#1 from an Arab perspective #2 setting a precedent) and damned if you don't(the consequences of Gadhafi remaining in power)

Let's be honest here, the countries likely to intervene don't actually give a damn about the Libyan people, they care about their access to the resources of Libya, and it's a simple cost-benefit equation. As oil and other resources become more scarce the likelihood of an invasion becomes more likely.

Sure those countries will publicise their invasion as being all about human rights, etc, but actually the decision is made on a calculator and based on the prices of the country's commodities.

Gadhafi can huff and puff all he wants about the loss of human lives, but he's barking up the wrong tree. Now if he just cut a deal to provide cheaper oil in exchange for military assistance ... oh wait, he's already done that, which is why he has all the military hardware he has, a lot of it from the U.S. and other countries which have been turning a blind eye to his human rights abuses for so long as he keeps the oil cheap.

At the end of the day the big military powers just care about the oil. Nothing more, nothing less. And that's what's wrong with the world, human lives mean less than spit to these people, and most of the international governments are morally bankrupt.

Frungy: Just to set the record straight: EU countries have sold most of the arms to Libya, almost none from the US. Second, 85% of Libya's oil goes to the EU, mostly Italy.

The presence of foreign armed forces will easily turn Libyan civil war into independent war. Gadhafi is not that mad, he may be right on this assessment: so , giving weapons to his opposition is the best solution.

I understand the implications of the US entering. Normally I am very anti-war, but I think the no-fly zone needs to be enforced.

I don't think the Americans have the resources or will to enter another civil war. Let's all hope the Libyan people can finish him off soon - along with all the Africans he has imported to protect him. And that the subsequent regime is not worse.

Shut down air power and anti-air systems and impose a no-fly zone to protect the innocent. And stay out of it otherwise. Let the people on the ground determine their fate.

This. The US president changes, the burning need to Do Something never seems to change. How about let someone else do something for once? If it's important to other countries, they'll do it. The US should not be the world's police. They can't afford it.

I an American who did not agree with Iraq. So I understand what you are trying to say. I disagree in one major area.

I believe that the world has a responsibility for the well being of all people. The people of Libiya are being killed by their government for asking for change. This is wrong. It is a crime against the people by their government. And it is a crime against humanity to use jets against protesters.

If we look to history, imagine if the US and other countries had taken the initiative to confront Hitler about concetration camps and the treatment of Jews in 1933 or 1936 before Germany was strong. Could we have avoided the war? Or avoided the Holocaust?

The world cannot and should not sit by while people suffer. This applies to every nation.

This is a Libya internal problem and any outside interference/help won't bring any good to the country. Yeah, I know the rebels are asking for help but in the end who made it the rebels or the outsiders?

With outside interference comes price hat needs to be paid back to them and that price might not be as expected nor wanted.

Normally I agree. And I am 100% against the intervention of ground forces in Libiya. But I also don't think the world should allow a state to use jet aircraft of civilians. No-Fly makes sense.

Jet-aircraft or not is immaterial. If you get hit with a big round it don't matter if it was artillery or dropped from a plane.

I hope the Libyans can dispose of him but right now he got the muscle and monies to pay for more.

Barack Obama has said the U.S. will act in concert with the U.N. and other countries, so it's up to the Libyans to get rid of this maniac. I think they will.

As I've gotten older I've started to change my tune a bit. Five years ago I would have supported foreign intervention. Now? I'm not sure sure. You can go in with the best intentions but the media doesn't display best intentions...they will show burned out warehouses, collateral damage from the intervention, families crying. The immediate (if the pages haven't already been written) response from some will be that the west (especially the US) has "once again invaded a foreign country." Others will start printing the OIL! bumper stickers again. You might actually being doing the right thing and you might actually be doing some good but I can guarantee that the media isn't going to show families safe in their houses from the intervention, they're going to show things blowing up with bombs that say, "Made in the USA/France/UK wherever" blwoing up stuff and people will quickly toss out the larger picture just to stop the images. And when I say stopping the images that's what I mean....if 10x more people die from doing nothing the images won't be as graphic and it will get pushed to the back of peoples minds and written off quickly. With no blood on our hands.

Maybe in the end the US should just play the card the Europeans have been playing...do nothing and convince your people that you're a pacifist and against war. Or say it's none of your business. Or say it's no threat to you. The fact is that people are having trouble making a response because the backlash from Iraq was so strong they end up saying the opposite of what they said in 2003 (see tkoind2), and they're going to have a tough time coming to terms with that.
