Many things wrong with this culture, gang rape is just one of them.

In rowdy scenes in the upper house of parliament, the opposition accused the government of not doing enough to protect women,

I know. If only the government subsidized the cost of every woman have a gang of three male bodyguards to follow her down every dark alley she goes...hey, wait a minute!

India has many wonderful things about its culture but its treatment of women in general is certainly not one if them. My partner felt uncomfortable and angry at the attitude of many Indian men, from looking straight through her to speak to me at restaurants and bars to a manner, tone of voice and way of speaking which differed markedly from when speaking to me. Staff were extremely polite and warm, but its pretty easy to see a sense of treating people differently. For many it seems that women most certainly don't fall into the category of those deserving respect, with this being a horrific extreme.

I just cannot get my mind around this. These are the rape news that we hear of. I'm sure there are many others that we don't know about. Not only that, the rapists either do not get caught or get away with light punishments. Is rape part of Indian culture?

A life sentence and castration for the rapists would be fine.

Given that Suttee pretty much stopped when the British threatened to kill the families of those who tried imposing it on unwilling subjects...yeah, India still has issues. But then the entire region seems to have problem with women

Sure India has many problems, but it would be ignorant, arrogant, racist to say the least that ONLY INDIA has these rapes etc...

Gang rape has nothing to do with culture, it is the act of idiots who know they can get away easily because of lack of actions from the Government authorities. If harsher penalties or sentences are imposed such as cutting off their 'D', surely would-be-potential offenders would re-consider carefully before they act.

India is definitely not a safe place to move around for any female. A female in India is just like a deer surrounded by crocodiles in a lake.

Another horror.

I would always encourage a woman to get revenge. It's easy. Just find them and cut off their fingers. It's hard to gang rape someone without any fingers.

Indian society never respect a woman in general.......what a shame!

Honestly, this isn't helpful. To anyone.

I agree. Surely cutting their knobs off would be more efficient?

Make rape a death penalty and it will stop.

Ninety percent of claims are rejected by the police and not reported. And ninety percent of victims won't go to the police for fear of shame. So, probably 99% of rapes in India are not reported. This is a huge problem in India, but nobody seems to care. And the religious authorities (Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian) all want to blame the victim. And they cannot be criticized, lest you violate India's laws against defamation of religion. The problem here is that religion has way too much power in India. People make decisions on faith, not objective reality. And that decision? If she was raped, she deserved it.

true. but i would add that a woman would have a much higher chance of being raped/gang-raped in india than in japan, china, singapore, germany, canada, australia, etc.

I don't think that anybody HAS said that 'only India has these problems', but I do think that there seems to be more of such behaviour happening in India than say, Japan, Canada, France, Spain, Ukraine, Estonia, Korea, New Zealand...
