Go for it folks. Get married while you can. < :-)

Marriage is between a man and a woman. Period.

"California is so progressive"

I'll betcha that has something to do with California's huge financial problems.

Sarge, you better get past it. People are going to marry, men/women, men/men, women/women.

You can drag your feet, cuss the moon, but it's going to happen.

Times change and beliefs change. You can either change with the times or fight the change tooth and nail.

Your teeth will rot out and your nails will rust away. But times will still change. < :-)

What about one man and multiple women, one woman and multiple men, multiple men and multiple women, one man/woman and one pet, multiple men/women and multiple pets, one brother and one sister, multiple brothers and multiple sisters, a man and his lawn chair,... I could go on.

Certainly you wouldn't object to any of the above since, as you say, times change and beliefs change.

Sarge, Helter Skelter,

You don't get it so I will explain it to you.

The idea is that marriage is a union between two people who love each other. This excludes animals and groups of 3 or more. Being gay is normal, healthy behavior and I'll explain why.

First, 10% of the human population is gay. That is a HUGE number. 1/3 of these people attempt suicide in their teenage years. A great number hide their sexual orientation because of people like you.

You have to accept that there is more than one sexual orientation. We have:

Heteosexual Homosexual Bi-sexual and then transgendered people, male mind/female body and vice-versa

Now, I realize that you've been taught to think this is wrong or gross. However, upon accepting these truths, your heart will open to the idea of gay marriage as a fair and just right. Think of black and women suffrage. It is human, and especially American, nature to hold prejudices against minorities that we don't understand.

People are gay just like you and I are straight. Our bodies tell us to be attracted to people of the opposite sex. For gays, they are attracted to people of the same sex.

So, if 10% of our population is gay, and they as humans, fall in love and want to marry (in a society where marriage is necessary for legal priveledges), what may I ask you is wrong with gay marriage?

How does it not make someone a bigot to be against gay marriage?

Helter_Skelter - There may be a time that any combination you mentioned might be legal. I won't be around, but who knows. < :-)

I feel sorry for the gays in California because, not only might their marriages be annulled by the Federal Government, but a lot of them are being forced into getting married now, as opposed to some time in the future, as the option to marry may not exist in the future.

Think of black and women suffrage

Comparing the issue of gay marriage to black and women suffrage? Gimme a break. Gays are one of the most prosperous and successful groups in America. Many politicians and celebrities are openly gay. They earn more money than the national average. I have gay friends and they're not a victimize minority like you're trying to portray. So don't try to sell me a bunch of nonsense about "gay suffrage."

The issue here is the definition of marriage which America has always defined as being between a single man and a single woman. It's an institution that defines American culture and values, just like other cultures in the world. Polygamist marriage is not allowed in America. Incestual marriage is not allowed in America. Children are not allowed to marry in America. Many groups aren't allowed to marry in America so stop making it a gay issue. It's about the definition of marriage.

The leftist Christianophobes love making an issue of gay marriage. It's really about attacking American values rather than actual concern about gays.

Kind of makes me question why we evolved as two sexes rather than one being with both a penis and a vagina. It would sure simplify those diagrams of the human species that we radio out into space for the extra-terrestrials.

The idea is that marriage is a union between two people who love each other. This excludes animals and groups of 3 or more

You are either illogical or bigotted. Why limit the number to two? Why exclude animals? Clearly, the institution of marriage isn't about the potential for procreating or being the basis of a family. So are you illogical or bigotted?

First, 10% of the human population is gay. That is a HUGE number. 1/3 of these people attempt suicide in their teenage years.

If 10% being gay means that the purpose of marriage should be changed to accomodate the 10%, then why don't you accept that many more than 10% of the male population would enter a polygamous union?

As for 1/3 attempting suicide, maybe their lifestyle has some serious flaws in it. Maybe the lifestyle doesn't lend itself to true fulfillment or happiness. Perhaps, in kindergartens of Massachusettes they should require teachers to not only read "My two fathers", but also to teach how to successfully commit suicide.

How friggin inhuman and emotionally bankrupt are you are for saying that? Its commonly known that self-loathing closeted homosexuals are the most voiciferous and irrational opponents.

I'd wager that most black women have been openly black, too.

You couldn't be more wrong.

First mistake is dividing "gays" into a group that's not "you." The point is that gays are human.

Gays are currently discriminated against, by you, just as blacks and women were in the past. How does it in anyway hurt you if two people are allowed to legally enjoy their love and happiness? It makes no sense.

No one is talking about group marriage. That's just a device that anti-gay marriage activists came up with to scare people from accepting gay marriage.

Also no one is talking about children getting married. We are talking about homosexual adults. I have no idea how you link homosexual marriage to polygamy and child abuse. It just shows how little you understand the issue. If you have gay friends, why don't you talk to them and ask their opinions on the matter? If you care about your friends, why don't you think twice before voting for legislation that will have no impact on your life, while subjecting them to a life without the legal benefits that homosexual couples can receive.

Why the hell do gay marriage naysayers always bring up polygamy when discussing this subject?

Talk about lack of an argument...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's an institution that defines American culture and values, just like other cultures in the world.

what? no, its a recognised legal status that should be allowed to all regardless of their religious beliefs. keep the bible out of marriage and culture and everyone will get along just fine.

I have no idea how you link homosexual marriage to polygamy

If you believe not allowing gays to marry is a violation of their civil rights, explain to me why not allowing a polygamist to marry two women wouldn't be a violation of his civil rights as well?

Are you just playing dumb are do you really have no idea?

OK I'll give you an idea. You're desire to change the definition and role of marriage in American society indicates that you feel that definition and role are arbitrary. If the definition and role are arbitrary then why should you attempt to limit the definition and role of marriage even as you seek to change it? You are inconsistent in your logic.

The naysayers bring up other non-traditional (to the U.S.) definitions of marriage to point out that by breaking with the current definition you make all others equally acceptable.

Now, why do I care? Because marriage isn't just an abstract concept or ideal, but has societal, legal, and financial consequences - all of which can affect me and my family.

I would love to hear how gay marriage will affect you and your family, especially financially

how gay marriage will affect you and your family, especially financially

If a whole new bunch of people who were previously paying income tax at the single person rate are made eligible for tax concessions in the form of spouse allowances etc., overall tax revenue goes down. That means either society has a smaller pie to share out, or those paying taxes pay more to maintain the status quo.

I would have no objection to the spouse allowance being done away with for childless families (If there are no children, there's no reason both partners can't work and pay taxes, whatever the gender balance).

Either way, these things do affect other members of society, so that the 'It doesn't affect you so if you have anything to say you're a bigot' argument is spurious.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

so all wives should work and pay full tax? their lifestyle affects me too?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

so all wives should work and pay full tax?

No. But there's no need for people who have no kids and earn enough to be able to allow their spouse to stay at home keeping their slippers warm, to get a tax allowance for having a live-in maid. If an able-bodied adult chooses not to work, you and I shouldn't be expected to take up their slack.

And yes it does affect you, because the more unnecessary tax allowances being doled out to people who don't warrant them, the more the taxman will need to take from you to make up the difference.

cleo- I am a traditionalist. My wife Mildred satys at home, and has my dinner ready at 6PM sharp for me, after i have finsihed my traffic warden duties.

We should all have tax advantages when me marry, because marriage is the best way society flourishes.

Mildred is happy enough staying at home. She does her chores, cooks, and has plent of time to join commities or have chats with Mrs Fourmille. Us working class need all the breaks we should get. We shouldn't boys and girls who bat for the other side also get tax breaks if the are commited to each other, and don't do abd things? Strewth life is hard enough without taking things away from decent married couples.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As a batchelor, not a confirmed one of course, i weigh up the pros and cons in a relationship. Gawd, tax breaks for people who are commited to staying together sounds greta to me. Does it matter if the gay section of our society wishes to marry? I m very liberated, and beleiev we should all be treated equally. My father is the opposite shouting "poofta" and the like when camp person are on the televison for an evening. The old fashioned views held be elderly person such as my father will be outdated soon. We can all be assured that thr governments of the world will recognise all type of marrige.

Oh yes, i think my vision of the future seems rosey and very nice i'm sure.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

GeorgeRoper- Oooh you are a card aren't you? I don't expect the government to give me tax breaks if i married my partner. But anything thing that encourages people to sty togther sounds awight to me.

Let us let gay and staright marry with teh blessing of all nations. the world would be a more tolernt and lovely place.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

GeorgeRoper -

There's nothing wrong with being a traditionalist, nothing wrong with Mildred having your dinner on the table when you get home from work. I'm sure you appreciate it, and her.

But why should people (like you) who already have the advantage of having your wife at home warming your slippers, be given even more advantages in the form of tax concessions? Why should people who can't afford to have their wives at home and who come home to cold slippers and no dinner ready have to pay more tax than you?

On the other hand, I would have no objection to Mrs Roper being eligible for tax relief in some form if she were at home looking after the little Stringlets.

We should all have tax advantages when me(we) marry

Regardless of whether one or both partners are earning? I could go with that.

So nobody can justify their links of polygamy to gay marriage.

Heh, didn't think so. Welcome to extinction people....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"If you believe not allowing gays to marry is a violation of their civil rights, explain to me why not allowing a polygamist to marry two women wouldn't be a violation of his civil rights as well?"

Of course, nobody answered my question because you can't be for gay marriage and then not allow polygamist marriage. If you believe it's the "civil rights" of gays to marry, then it's the civil rights of polygamists to marry as well. That's the link between the two. You can't be for one and not the other, though libs have never been shy when it comes to hypocrisy.

Gay marriages, pplygomy, what you lot on about?

The good lord made man and women differnet, so they could populate the earth and remain faithfull.

You don't get two fellas making babies do you, it aint natural, ban it like the old days.

Already they've stolen the words queer and gay from the language. If you say these days "i've come over all queer" when you feel ill, people would look at you with disguts. Too bleeding rigt too. haha.
