So, who broke the truce?

At 6:30 am, 90 minutes before a 72-hour ceasefire was slated to go into affect, Israeli authorities alleged that Palestinian militants captured an Israeli soldier. In response Israel began heavy bombardment of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, killing 50 and wounding more than 220 people.

The Israeli army says the soldier, 23-year-old British-Israeli Hadar Goldin, is “suspected” to have been captured at around 9:30 am, which is after the 72-hour truce announced last night was supposed to come into affect. Hamas spokespeople have not confirmed that a soldier was captured

The double standard being applied here is just plain ludicrous. Hamas attacking Israeli soldiers is "barbaric", but Israel literally blowing up a school full of children is, judging by the reaction in the US government, perfectly OK?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

The BBC reported yesterday that this all started when Israel began blowing up more Palestinian tunnels, then Palestine started to attack those who were blowing up the tunnels and it escalated from there. Palestine should not have defended those tunnels, they should have just pointed out that Israel blowing up stuff is a violation of a ceasefire. Now both sides will justify repeating themselves again, how can each side think there will be a military solution, while their history proves otherwise?

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Finally, the US is making sense!

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Oh come on. Whether or not people believe Israel started it first or Hamas, this cycle is not going to stop. I'd think it would be bloody obvious by now. Either Hamas gets its goal of "destroying Israel" or Israel destroys Hamas. Until then, we're going to be back at square 1 over and over and over and over again xWhenever one destroys the other for good.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Gaza is a blood bath and the amount of Palestinian blood flowing is likely to greatly increase over the coming days. Israel have threatened to level Gaza.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

but Israel literally blowing up a school full of children is, judging by the reaction in the US government, perfectly OK?

@senseiman Not "perfectly ok" You know, those mortars and tank shells, and bombs from the sky, once you release them, who knows where they go? Its all accidental of course. *

*Does not apply to Palestinian Qassam rockets.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

@Crush them When you systematically fail to hit your target and making 1% accurate take down in your body count, "accidental" seems to be the IDF strategy: "Hey, lets release a hell lot of bombs, there gotta be a terrorist down there right?"

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Call me cynical, but aren't IDF casualties PR gold for a country where everyone - rich or poor - is conscripted?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Meanwhile the US does not condemn the the Israeli slaughter of Gaza's children. This is "peace in our time."

The soldier may well be dead, killed be Israeli friendly fire.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Call me cynical, but aren't IDF casualties PR gold for a country where everyone - rich or poor - is conscripted?

I look at the question in another way: In a country where everyone -- rich, poor, man, woman -- and nearly everything is militarized, doesn't it make "civilian targets" rather rare?

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Meanwhile the US does not condemn the the Israeli slaughter of Gaza's children. This is "peace in our time."

The soldier may well be dead, killed be Israeli friendly fire.

Give me a break! All they do is talk about the Gaza children, they they even acknowledged that Israel existed is a miracle in itself.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

they should have just pointed out that Israel blowing up stuff is a violation of a ceasefire.

Well except that the ceasefire specifically allowed Israel to continue destroying tunnels.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

After a few days you can see a bit of a loop/process in how Israel and it's supporters argue: Stage 1. Not sure about facts, we need to wait Stage 2. People were killed but by HAMAS faulty equipment Stage 3. Ok fine we killed them but they were terrorists Stage 4. Ok they were civilians but they were used as support/human shield for Hamas Stage 5. Fine fine you got us there, we've actually made a mistake but hey! at least we kill civilians by accident not like hamas who does it on purpose Final Stage. Why do you question Israel's action so much? Are some kind of anti-semite?

Look, as long as you define current's Israel's action as a legitimate response to a perceived hamas threat, you'll be seen as liars. Why not call it as it is? A genocide operation to eradicate the palestinian presence out of the west bank...

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Stage 1: Fire Rockets. Stage 2: Wait for the response from Israel, then the media coverage arrives. Stage 3: Print pictures of dead Palestinians. Stage 4: Wait for the world to criticize Israel. Stage 5: Call a truce when supplies are low.

Repeat every 18 months as needed.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Mike O'Brian: So bombing tunnels with people inside them is considered a ceasefire? Please show us your where it says that, in the ceasefire agreement.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

SuperLib

Stage 3: Print pictures of dead Palestinians.

Or dead Syrians from months/years ago...

Stuart Hayward

So bombing tunnels with people inside them is considered a ceasefire? Please show us your where it says that, in the ceasefire agreement.

Oh come on now. You're defending the fact that Hamas combatants were in the tunnels to begin with? Unbelievable.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Now that we know the soldier is dead, which sticks in the memory is the adjective "barbaric" which the US was quick to apply to Hamas but never applied to Israel's slaughter of innocent Gaza civilians, many of them children. Here is what is truly barbaric. The July 26 Harretz reported thar right winger taunted a major peace rally in Tel Aviv with the chant "There is no school in Gaza today. There are no children left." People pleaded with them to stop as it was damaging the image of the IDF but they chanted on with renewed gusto. This went past the mainstream media, as did, for most part, the peace rally itself. The worst we have heard said from the US and it's friends about the worst Israeli barbarism against Gaza's children is that it unacceptable, or something like that.

Hey, if Hamas is going to use civilians as shields and fire rockets from behind what they say are their people and the people support them,, hey just casualties of war , too bad! When Hamas thinks it is fine to tunnel across borders, Hamas and Palestinians that support Hamas must suffer the consequences. When Hamas fires rockets into to Israel indiscriminately not carry where they hit or who they would kill, then Palestinians that support Hamas wil suffer the consequences for those terrorists they support! Look at it differently as you wish but there will be no peace when you have a terrorist regime that says there should be no recognition of Israel or the sate of Israel and with the same mindset of Iran that Israel would be totally vanished from the face of the planet to begin with and wants them totally destroyed. Does anyone know how easy it would be for Israel to completely wipe out the Palestinians if Israel took the same play book as Hamas and those that support them??? All the negative comments here about Israel I find totally of a sick minded uninformed stupid people! No one can deal with a people or a group that stands for total nonexistence of another. What is wrong with you people. Too much BBC BS? I do not care about Christian or Muslim or Islamic sentiment between any people but to bow to ignorance of one is totally out of place , but I am also sure many in other countries are scarred to death ther could be repercussions by Muslims within their countries by these extremist groups so they bend over backwards to appease them in all ways they can, so here on JT we read these dumb comments based on support for the barbaric BS by Hamas and groups like them and support people that support these barbaric groups and actions !

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Stuart hayward: Show me somewhere that has the actual words of the agreement. Until then I will believe the news reports and words of Mr Kerry.

Speaking from New Delhi, Kerry said neither side will advance militarily from their current positions, but that Israel will continue to destroy tunnels Hamas has used to smuggle weapons and fighters into Israel.

<www.voanews.com/content/israel-calls-up-16000-more-reservists/1968608.html>

Under the truce, Israeli forces would be allowed to continue sealing the tunnels Hamas has constructed to sneak into Israel.

@tyvtgo1US

I couldn't have said it better myself. Spot on. Why no one else gets it baffles me.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I'm ashamed to be an American with this kind of leadership, present and past. The US should just get it over with and declare itself a corporation, since this headline is no different from a idiot commercial that only marketers could write.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

FizzBit, so I assume Hamas did not break the seize fire and had not again and again before as well.. yeah right. You do not need to be ashamed of being an American since your claim to be one is nothing but a lie anyways! But as for leadership, I will agreed Obama is worthless internationally!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I will agreed Obama is worthless internationally!

I second that.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Lots-a-balls tyvtgo1US lol

The Gaza Strip is basically a walled in prison with Israel as the warden. Israel stole the land back in 48, yet people can't/don't want to understand why Hamas thumbs their nose at Israel who controls the energy, economy and freedom of Palestinians. Basic freedom. Israel is a theologically ruled country. Just like Saudi Arabia. MY GOD IS BETTER THAN YOUR GOD! Oh wait! It's the same God. Oh that's right, I GIVE THIS LAND TO YOU! Yeah right! 2000 years ago and were kicked out by "God" because they f....d it up. The main reason we started America was independence from these kinds of a......s, both religious and economic. How anyone could support this scum country escapes me. OOOPS! there goes another million dollars to Israel everyday.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@Oyajid

but you have to understand

I have Native American DNA in me. Spare me your propaganda. Israel is scum.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

1b$ for military support to Israel vs. 1.1M$ for humanitarian support to Gaza for instance

Well since you didn't link to your source I can't very well check it. But the OECD says that in 2012 The PA received over 2B$ in Official Developement Assistance through their auspices and over 400M$ was from the US.

http://www.oecd.org/dac/stats/documentupload/PSE.JPG

you have to expect that they use desperate tactics.

And groups that use desperate tactics have to expect a heavy response.

I have Native American DNA in me.

So? DNA does not transfer knowledge.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@fizz

The Gaza Strip is basically a walled in prison with Israel as the warden. Israel stole the land back in 48,

Stole the land??? ROFL

yet people can't/don't want to understand why Hamas thumbs their nose at Israel who controls the energy, economy and freedom of Palestinians. Basic freedom.

No, the problem is Hamas. Hamas thumbs their nose at the Israelis, will NEVER recognize the Jewish state, takes them on as if Hamas has a snowballs chance in defeating them, waste of time, waste of lies and mostly waste of life.

If you think like that, then you should be seriously outraged that Hamas is using religion to spread hate and to give them excuses to murder innocent men, women and children, promising them a place in the land of milk and honey and 72 virgins.

The main reason we started America was independence from these kinds of a......s, both religious and economic. How anyone could support this scum country escapes me. OOOPS! there goes another million dollars to Israel everyday.

I think you meant how anyone would even think about supporting or even giving Hamas real legitimacy.

The soldier may well be dead, killed be Israeli friendly fire.

Note that Kabukilover called it right on the money.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Note that Kabukilover called it right on the money.

Note that yabits called it wrong. Nobody knows how he died, it is still speculation. He may have died from wounds suffered in the blast from the Hamas suicide bomber. Unless/until a body is recovered nobody knows, and even then there may still be a question.

Oh, wait I see. This way you can blame it on Israel whether there is any proof or not. Just another day in yabitsland.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Note that yabits called it wrong. Nobody knows how he died

If you don't know how he died, you can't say anyone called it "wrong." LOL!

What was "right" is the fact that he was dead all along. What was "wrong" was Israelis putting forth statements to sway people to believe that he was captured -- putting enough faith in its own false report to start killing civilians in reprisal.

Just another day in Zionist Nazi-land.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

If you don't know how he died, you can't say anyone called it "wrong." LOL!

But you were the one that was quick to run to judgement about how the soldier died. You seemed convinced that it most likely was from friendly fire.

"What was "right" is the fact that he was dead all along. What was "wrong" was Israelis putting forth statements to sway people to believe that he was captured -- putting enough faith in its own false report to start killing civilians in reprisal."

You mean "sway" as in, using propaganda for the world in order to trump sympathy for their cause? Hmmmm, you mean the same thing Hamas does on a daily basis? Hamas is THE poster child for trying to trump sympathy in order to win the PR campaign, so if Hamas and the radical wing of the Palestinians do it all the time which they practically invented and their mantra it's ok, but even IF and this is a big IF Isreal is trying to sway the public, what's wrong with that? It's disgusting that the dirty Jews could even contemplate doing something so dastardly, but if Hamas does it, they have real legitimate reasons and of course, they would NEVER lie or fabricate ANY story, because we know, Hamas are honest law-abiding respectful citizens.

Yabits, I'm gonna stop there before what I'm going to say something next that will get my post deleted.

Just another day in Zionist Nazi-land.

I think I'm starting to get a real clear understanding of what you really are trying to convey here and that's actually very sad.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What was "wrong" was Israelis putting forth statements to sway people to believe that he was captured

Wow, what a surprise. Wrong again.

Hamas' armed wing claims to have captured an Israeli soldier

Palestinians in Gaza ended the most devastating day of Israel’s bombardment on a celebratory note, after Hamas’ military wing announced it had captured an Israeli soldier. A masked spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades gave the name and military ID number of the alleged captive, prompting cheers in Gaza and in Palestinian communities beyond — but Israel has yet to confirm or deny the claim.

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/7/20/gaza-civilians-flee.html

Let's see, yabits. In the other discussion, you completely misrepresent what an Israeli MP said and now you are misrepresenting which side claimed they had captured an IDF soldier.

I wonder if you are going to now attempt to claim Aljazeera is a 'Zionist news organization'. Sorry, they are not and you are shown to be incorrect again.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If you don't know how he died, you can't say anyone called it "wrong." LOL!

But if we don't know how he died then claiming someone got it right is wrong. Meaning your claim about Kabukuilover getting it right is "wrong".

Every report from Israel I saw clearly said they thought he had been capture, making clear they weren't sure. And there were reports from Hamas saying that he was probably captured by the group that they had lost contact with.

Just another day in yabitsland.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

But if we don't know how he died then claiming someone got it right is wrong. Meaning your claim about Kabukuilover getting it right is "wrong".

LOL! You'll twist yourself into a pretzel trying to show how I was "wrong."

But the basic fact is that he was already dead -- as Kabukilover called it. And yet the Zionists went on wrong reports of his being captured to launch civilian reprisals, including an attack on a U.N. school / safe haven in Rafah.

Perhaps the Zionists had lost the phone number so they could not call ahead and warn them.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

@yabits

But the basic fact is that he was already dead --as Kabukilover called it.

But we don't know how he died, exactly.

And yet the Zionists went on wrong reports of his being captured to launch civilian reprisals, including an attack on a U.N. school / safe haven in Rafah.

But it's ok, for Hamas to stash weapons in an UN Hospital facility? Why is it acceptable for Hamas to fire from a hospital at Israeli soldiers? At the same time, why is it unacceptable for the Israelis to fire back at Hamas? Your hypocrisy is unraveling and looking extremely flawed and childish.

Perhaps the Zionists had lost the phone number so they could not call ahead and warn them.

You just hate it that you can't do anything thwart the Israelis. It just bugs you that much. :-)

Personally, I hope and pray that once and for all Israel completely either wipes out Hamas or at least their capacity capabilities of harming and killing anymore Israelis

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Kabukilover said The soldier may well be dead, killed be Israeli friendly fire. and the soldier was not killed by friendly fire.

You said Note that Kabukilover called it right on the money. but he didn't get it right on the money.

Pretty simple and clear that you were wrong, no pretzel twisting needed. But please keep up the entertaining tap dancing.
