The politics of today is a lot more conservative and outwardly racist that it was during my time as an officer. Our military values then and today were inclusion and diversity. We were in fact proud that poor kids of ever race could join the military and succeed in an organization that did not discriminate. That has not changed. What has changed is that society now seems to accept open racism and all kinds other bigotries that I used to think the nation had finally overcome and certain elements of our politics openly embrace that racism. The kinds of filth that comes out of some white politicians mouths today would have never been tolerated in the 1980s and 1990s. Now being a bigot is considered cool.

The general with his Yankee common sense nailed it: swearing an oath to the constitution makes no provision for wannabe dictators. Trump acted in violation of his own oath from day one. Why are oath-breakers tolerated in both Houses, too? Without legal consequences for these hypocrites nobody can take these oath ceremonies seriously.

Phew! That's a deep dive and few will want to go there, but while US democracy is indeed deeply flawed and corrupted and needs a radical overhaul, history teaches that the military is an authoritarian organization, hardly a friend of democracy and, cannot be entrusted to "create" democracy.
