“The people who determine these things need to be representative of a broad constituency,"

'Broad constituency', what the Trump admin is not. It's not even broad in the billionaire class.

Trump does not represent the breadth of Americans; he represents his fellow 'elite' and many from his demographic, i.e. a minority of the population.

Mohammad Ali, who refused to fight in the Vietnam War and instead fought the corrupt system in America. Harriet Tubman, who operated the Underground Railroad to free slaves. Desmond Doss, who refused to fight in WWII and became a battlefield medic instead. Clara Barton, who founded the Red Cross. Anthony Borges, aka "Iron Man", who used his body to barricade a door at Stoneman Douglass while protecting 20 other students. He took 5 bullets doing that and lived.

No cops or post-WWII soldiers need apply. Not very warm feelings for government types either.

The four federal agency heads that Trump specifically named to the heroes task force are white. Asked if that was appropriate for a diverse country, Goldey responded, “Your question is completely offensive.”

Goldey is correct. Objecting to a persons nomination because they are white is, in fact, racist.

My personal choice for the hero statue would be the inventor of the air conditioner, Willis Carrier.

He is already memorialized in the Capital building. There is a statue room where each state chooses two statues to place under their flag. Willis Carrier is one of the two individuals memorialized by Florida.

George Floyd was no angel but keep in mind the police were called and he ended up dead because a merchant thought he was passing a counterfeit $20. That has happened to me some years ago where a merchant rejected nice fresh Jackson from the ATM I offered in payment for groceries or whatever it was. I took it back to the bank and had it replaced. No one called the cops on me.

@desert. I wonder if you are white?

regarding statues I would go for Snowden because he is still alive and can make a difference to the future.

How about not building this 'Garden' period because it's another gust of hot air and an ego trip from a traitor with an ego bigger than the planet Jupiter. We can honors our heros by not doing anything this immature jerk suggests. Why should anyone even listen to anything Trump says?

Liberals have no way of knowing this, none.

Neither do the Democrats or their predecessors either.

They urged the task force to consider a statue to Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old high school senior shot to death last year while lunging at a gunman in his British literature class.

By Kyle Rittenhouse logic, Castillo's shooting was justified because the shooter was acting in self defence.

Floyd didn't deserve to die under a police officer's knee, but he wasn't a hero.

By Kyle Rittenhouse logic, Castillo's shooting was justified because the shooter was acting in self defence.

The right to self defense was lost the moment the school shooter starting shooting at random people despite no threat to himself. From that moment on it was self defense by everybody else. Kyle Rittenhouse only fired after having a guy chase him at length and directly on his heels. Its totally different, even if Rittenhouse is a gun loving, police boot licking, Trump butt kissing, fascist little war criminal wannabee.

Kendrick Castillo had every right to act in his own defense and those around him. Several teachers also died in acts of heroism that day. They should probably all get a group statue.

The police preliminary reports say he was being attacked as does the video.

So you’re saying the kid was in the wrong? God, I hope not.

Exactly.

Stop!Hammertime

By Kyle Rittenhouse logic, Castillo's shooting was justified because the shooter was acting in self defence.

Are they not showing the actual video on the mainstream news? Rittenhouse was chased and knocked down by 3 violent individuals, one of them hit him with a skateboard, another kicked him and the third had a weapon of his own and want to shoot him. If there ever was a clear case of self-defense, that would be it. The 3 attackers, by the way, all had criminal recordsm one of them a violent child molester.

Yeah, great "peaceful protesters", CNN.

True, but he was being chased because he had just shot and killed an unarmed man before being chased. The other unarmed protesters feared that if he could kill one person, he could kill others, like a mass shooter. So, they did what they thought they had to do to stop him from shooting others.

In my opinion, I think the main culprit in all of this is the police force in Kenosha. They did nothing to keep the peace. They only emboldened armed people like Kyle Rittenhouse to hunt down protesters, whether they were doing violent acts or not.

Again, to be fair, as wrong as it is to use violence in protests, it is also wrong to use vigilantism; especially when it comes to a loss of someone's life. That to me is the fairest statement that can be made. We must condemn both actions on both sides.

Dessert tortoise.... George Floyd didn’t end up dead because he passed a fake bill. He ended up dead because of an overdose of the cocktail of illegal drugs he had consumed.

Violent, criminal junkies should not held up as heroes. The black community has many better example to offer

Precisely. I think there's a good case for self defence in the first incident (the used car dealership), not so strong in the second. Particularly if we count the two incidents as one. I'd even argue the second and third victims were attempting a citizen's arrest, during which, I believe - but happy to be corrected- force can be justified.

But we're getting of topic. Sorry.
