“The fact that Nazis with imperial war flags try to storm the Bundestag recalls the darkest period in German history,”

It's not just Germany seeing a rise in national socialism. The far right are spreading throughout the globe, getting support from Russia (cyber warfare see Internet Research Agency, etc.) , one of the globe's regimes led by an authoritarian and his system of national socialism.

In the US the far right are probably more powerful today than they've ever been. Armed far right militias are being used as backup by police departments.

I still feel sick at what happened in Berlin. This is exactly why the protest demonstration should have been banned but it seems democracy only serves to empower the forces using it to abolish it.

I'm at my wit's end. How to deal with antidemocratic nutjobs while adhering to democratic values?

It's a rhetorical question and I don't expect an answer that gives me hope.

The real issue is not the far right, the real issue is lockdowns, masks and freedom of movement.

A short summary in simple German, just run it through a translator: https://www.mopo.de/news/politik-wirtschaft/-querdenker--aufmarsch-jetzt-kann-keiner-mehr-sagen--er-haette-nichts-gewusst-37267306

You keep people down, you downplay illegal immigration, you treat immigrants better than the native citizens, you disrespect and give preferential treatment to illegals you will see a rise in Nationalism and you won’t be able to contain it unless the playing field changes and needs of the majority are firstly recognized.

Yes, as long as Democrats threaten the 2nd amendment, the nation and the constitution expect militias to grow.

Any protest that the legacy media does not like is "far right" these days. At this point, the label has lost all meaning.

Fact is, this a large reaction of the mainstream population against Merkels government overreach. Nothing to do with "far" anything.

But trust the media (both German and intl) to put the typical spin on it.

Big yen

Looking at the photos of the Berlin protest I saw a lot of images in the crowd of Trump, some US flags and MAGA signs, people professing their belief in QAnon, etc. An occasional one of Putin, one of "Vladimir Q. Putin", (Vladimir Loves Q Loves Donald, Give Us Freedom, just to bring everything together), and even one with Martin Luther King's face, would you believe.

They may derive some support from Russia. But I think the major inspiration for these "antidemocratic nutjobs"

Are we looking at the same pictures? The only antidemocratic nutjobs are the Antifas with their camouflage and aggressive posture. And yes, Angelan Merkel and her cronies.

The protest (and yes, this was a peaceful protest and not a violent riot like the ones in the US that the media mislabels as "protests") represent the mainstream population that had enough of being muzzled and locked in by Merkels authoritarian policies.

Video of the event here. "Antidemocratic nutjobs"??
