He survives several concentration camps, lives to be 96 years old and dies at the hands of a Russian madman. There is a lot of innocent blood on Putin's hands.

He survived both Hitler and Stalin but not Putin.

Horrible, just heartbreaking. RIP

Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.

History will record that Russia, led by ex-Stasi, ex-KGB agent Vladimir Putin (a name that will live in infamy) invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine in 2022.

The demented dwarf lurking in the Kremlin and his kleptocratic crew must face their Nuremberg.

One commentator has likened the Z they use as their swastika and labelled them ZAZIS (pronounced zatzis), a telling comparison.

All the Russian military committing war crimes at every level must answer for their crimes.

To have survived so much only to be murdered in his own home by Russian murderers!

A holocaust survivor has been killed Russian forces, which invaded under the auspices of "de-nazifying" Ukraine. Odd isn't it, that a) it was Russian forces who killed the holocaust survivor, and b) holocaust survivors chose to live in a country "run" by neo-Nazis.

So much for your Denazification, Vladimir Vladimirovich.

Lauren Witzke, a GOP candidate for the Senate in Delaware, said: “Here’s the deal. Russia is a Christian nationalist nation. They’re actually Russian Orthodox. ... I identify more with Putin’s Christian values than I do with Joe Biden.”  Televangelist Pat Robertson proclaimed that Putin is “being compelled by God” to invade Ukraine. That position, btw, is not at all far from the position on Ukraine taken by the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church.  Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill recently preached to his church’s 90 million faithful followers "If we see Ukraine as a threat, we have the right to use force to ensure the threat is eradicated,” “We have entered into a conflict which has not only physical but also metaphysical significance. We are talking about human salvation, something much more important than politics.”

In 2014, Putin made the cover of the evangelical magazine Decision in a piece in which Graham's son Franklin lauded his handling of the Winter Olympics and his protection of Christians. Franklin visited Russia in 2015, and ever since, has promoted Putin as a godly leader. A few days before the invasion of Ukraine, he asked people to “pray for Putin” but not for Ukrainians,

Back on topic please.

I applaud how Germany took seriously it’s own responsibility as part of the former Axis about it’s past horrendous crimes unlike some other countries from the former alliance, and I’m not refering to Italy.

Italy is a weird case. In August 1943 the Italian parliament voted to leave the Axis and join the Allies. The Germans knew this was coming and were prepared. The following day the Germans invaded Italy. The Italian fleet tried to flee to Malta and the Germans attacked them from the air, sinking many of their ships though a few survived the war and serve the post war Italian Navy into the 1960s. Mussolini was even captured but a German commando team freed him. He was caught again in the closing days of the war by Italian Partisans and hung.

The man survives the atrocities of The Holocaust and bloody Hitler only to be taken out by another egomaniac glutting on power and control. Unacceptable. Putin has a hell of a lot of answer for; the blood on his hands will never wash off. Deepest condolences to this man's family. The world has lost a brave and courageous soul but I hope he finds peace and happiness wherever he is now.

Never understood people conflating those two, the only reason anyone survived Hitler was because of Stalin. People act like communists and fascists weren't on opposing sides of the war.

To tweak the above towards the truth, millions of Soviet citizens at the cost of their lives, health and happiness, not Stalin, drove out the Germans. Call Stalin whatever you want. I call him a mass-murderer because that's the most significant thing about the man, like Putin, another of the mediocrities that history regularly spews up. The Germans are a people chastened by the lessons of the past and have rebuilt their country and learned to defend democratic values. The homage paid to the Ukrainian Holocaust survivor is testimony to the decency of Germans today.

Lots of people seem confused about whether Russia is bad or not.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

the only reason anyone survived Hitler was because of Stalin.

The only reason Stalin wasn't beaten by the Nazis was Lend Lease and the lives of a lot of British, Canadian and American merchant sailors who gave their lives defending against murderous German U-boat and surface attacks and the weather to bring convoys of US and Canadian produced armaments to Murmansk to keep the Red Army supplied and in the war.

True but how many of those past laws making their NAZI heroes and making it illegal to call them anything other than "freedom fighters"

Which ones? Which ones are specifically venerated as heroes for being Nazis? Your claim here is highly misleading.

He chose to live in Kharkiv, a surrounded and smashed city which solidly refuses to bow to the invading Russian forces despite a large ethnic Russian speaking population. A brave man.

RIP. The man was a strong survivor to the end. Good to see Germany pay tribute to him.

The death of the elderly Holocaust survivor reflects the reality of Putin’s absurd lies that Russia is fighting against Nazism in Ukraine. Far from it, the Russians are proving by their unjust and violent actions that they’re as bad or even worse than the Nazis.

It was a huge reason but I wouldn't say the only one, because the Nazis did a lot of dumb things like invade the Soviet Union without adequately suiting up their troops, preparing for a winter war, using the wrong equipment, and more. The Russians also had lots of men who were sacrificed and the poor planning, Hitler not listening to his generals, etc ensured their defeat.

They had more more similarities than differences.

Olegek - you mentioned on another thread that you are Russian. Do you support Putin's war?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

But always supported by Germany

The Ukrainians need all the support hey can get to protect them from the murderous Russian military who have invaded their nation and are killing the people of Ukraine to support tiny Putin's ego (I just heard today he's only 5'4").

This man has seen USSR Communism, Nazi invaders'' holocaust, USSR Communism again, post-Cold War Ukraine, Orange Revolution and he dies as a victim of an insane idiotic war. His own experiences could tell us a lot, there was much wisdom this survivor man could tell us. And it's very sad that he dies because of yet another egomaniacal bastard and the lies he made up. May Boris Romanchenko now RIP and cursed be Putin.

Mao and Stalin killed many more people than Hitler did. Funny thing is that they became idolised during the student movement.

The Soviets were also, in a massive nation which was only just industrializing at the time, defending their country from a technologically superior aggressor. You can say what you like about the Soviet Union and its leaders (and I would probably agree with you, and I'm a socialist), but the people - men, women, and sometimes even children - weren't going to let their country go without a fight.

I wonder if there are any modern day parallels.

“His death reminds us that Germany has a special historical responsibility toward Ukraine,

The same thing toward Russian

millions of Russian were murdered by German Nazi as "untermenschen" (subhumans)

History repeats itself.
