Going two years in this pandemic and many people still know as much as they knew when it started, basically nothing =)

What could media have meant by official figures?

Official figures released Thursday show Germany has become the latest country to record 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

its neighbors crossed months ago but which some in Western Europe's most populous nation had hoped to avoid

How can you avoid that, if your people walking around without masks, without any prevention, traveling within Europe without any serious restrictions rules, and with completely ignoring that the protection of the vaccine is going down rapidly day by day.

One of my friends over there said, he will get his booster shot this week.

But he is on a priority list because of some health issues.

My understanding is that there is no differentiation between "with" and "of", if the person who has passed away was Corona positive it counts as a "death in connection with Corona". And for a majority it's quite plausible that a Corona infection doesn't help with any other pre-existing conditions or whatever you might have at the same time...

@WilliB

Care to elaborate what "authoritarianism" you're referring to here? There never was a similarly strict lockdown as in Italy or Spain, nor are mask mandates or other rules really enforced. It all played out rather to the contrary if you ask me.

I understand what you're saying, but that's just the way it's counted, and there are enough reasons to do it that way. If someone has passed away in an ICU in the end due to multiple organ collapse which was caused initially by a Corona infection, shouldn't that count as a death "in connection with Corona"? It's similar with HIV, many of the deceased have passed away due to pneumonia or other infections, but the connection with HIV is there.

So no "muddying the waters" here from my point of view. No idea if you have been following German media, but there have been plenty of debates, various opinions, an outrageously stupid tabloid campaign journalism and so on.

If you have any culprits who have been muddying the waters, please name a few, I'd be interested who you're referring to.

It is an accumulated number which means nothing out of context.

There's a very clear difference. "Of" means that the virus was the key cause of death. "With" means that the person had tested positive for the virus, but that it was not the actual cause of death. It's not that difficult, but still the media and anyone else who stands to gain from muddying the waters has been happy to do so.

Vaccination passports, travel restrictions, massive discrimination against the unvaccinated, and now even talk about forced vaccinations, new "vaccination laws" in content very similar to the "emergency laws" that we old leftists used to protest against back then, basically removing basic citizens rights. You should check again and not take the corporate media at face value.

Of course it’s an accumulated number. The context is also obvious.

What a bizarre complaint.

Accumulated numbers by definition always go up, thus saying nothing about a current development.

And a raw number without ref to population size is meaningless. I.e. do you want to compare the total number of deaths in Germany population 80 million to that of Andorra, population 70,000? A reference to population size is needed for such figures to make any sense.

You are welcome.

Again. These are all things that anyone with a lick of sense already knows.

@ Sven Asai

So, the number infections are high and other European counties similarly afflicted as was/is the UK in certain areas…still.

It would be interesting to find the true split between "with COVID" and "of COVID".

*It would be interesting to find the true split between "with COVID" and "of COVID".*

Agreed. If only the article stated how many people died with COVID.

Oh, wait, it does. The very first sentence:

BERLIN

Official figures released Thursday show Germany has become the latest country to record 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

There's one little word in my original comment that really counts: "true".

What the news report says and what is actually true are likely to be two very different things, considering how fast and loose the media has been with the facts since this whole thing began.

Yes, it’s become difficult to get more population vaccinated. The specific problem there is, besides of having too early closed bigger mass vaccination centers when numbers were low, there’s quite an amount of anti-vaxxers, let’s say 10% , and also another 10% part of the imported from anywhere, but still not able or willing to decipher any German or English word, including of course sentences like ‘Please get vaccinated.’ You would need legions of translators into all globe’s languages when trying to reach and convince all of them. So it’s an illusion to get near the 95% vaccination rate that would be necessary to hold delta variants in check and turn this pandemic in a more normal and bearable endemic state in a shorter time. Next waves are therefore pre-programmed.

Alas, do not hold your breath for that. The German authorities and media have decided to use Covid as an excuse for ever more authoritarianism.
