Berlin on Friday took control of the German operations of Russian oil firm Rosneft to secure energy supplies which have been disrupted after Moscow invaded Ukraine.

Putin has used Rosneft to enrich himself and create his loyal ban of oligarchs. https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2022/03/29/1088886554/how-putin-conquered-russias-oligarchy

Putin's predatory form of state capitalism is as nasty and greedy as the 'West's putative 'market' capitalism, and like western nations at their worst Putin uses his military and wars to protect his personal financial interests. Plus he's not afraid to use prison camps to hold his enemies, similar to his pals in the CCP. The new bosses are probably going to be even worse than the old ones. And will probably pollute the planet much more, with no one able to check them.

Can't see it hurting Germany. Can see it taking some profits from Rosneft the motherland company and Putin's share of it. Good move, Germany.

Trump warned Germany about over relying on Russia for a high percentage of their energy needs. The German representatives laughed at such a suggestion. They're not laughing now. Another example of Trump being right! Not far-right, just right!

@ETHAN1001 what do you mean Trump being right?

If the US didn't coerce Germany into cancelling North Stream 2, we would still be getting plenty of gas from Russia I believe.

From the very beginning this has only been about two super powers and Germany being sandwiched between them.

Germany effectively stole these refiners.

They will have to be returned as part of the peace deal.

Good luck to Germany getting any oil to refine in them.

Don't forget NK does it, and trump wanted to do it and steal an election.

No worries. They don’t want Russian oil.

The refineries' operations had been disrupted as the German government decided to slash Russian oil imports, with an aim to halt them completely by year's end.

By taking control of the sites, the German authorities can then run the refining operations using crude from countries other than Russia.

The European are making side deal to appease Russian, looking out for their own interest, they have an opportunity of making Russian lives miserable,by cutting off train service to Kalingrad, they choose not too, American will have a Merriest of Christmas,I cannot say that for Europe

I wasn't worried.

It's just as well they don't want any Russian oil because they aren't going to get any. They did the same with a Gazprom owned gas company so the Russians just shut off the supply of gas to it and deducted it from the total amount they send Germany so anther company couldn't make up the shortfall.

A good German word schadenfreude comes to mind. Germany was warned for a long while of the danger of relying on russian energy supplies but chancellor Gerhard Schroeder pushed for russian energy (and was rewarded with well paid position on the board) and Merkel arrogantly and blindly ignored the warnings and now the chickens have come home to roost and the German people are paying the price..

Why does Russia and Russians take this. Supersonic missiles can destroy every major European city in five days. Stealing peoples boats, money, houses, companies. It’s going too far.

Rodney - Russia left us with no choice.

The Kinzal missiles have proven to be no more of a menace in Ukraine than the subsonic variety, a bit more difficult to shoot down but no more destructive. So no they can’t destroy every major European city in 5 days, russia despite its criminal bombardment of civilian targets hasn’t destroyed every Ukrainian city in more than 6 months and NATO would be a damned sight less restrained in hitting back than Ukraine has been and wouldn’t hesitate to target russia.

Well, for one thing, if a single missile lands on NATO soil, the Russkies will have way more than just the Ukrainians to worry about. And given how much of a slap down that single nation is giving them, I can only imagine how laughably poorly a war with NATO would go. And unlike Ukraine, NATO wouldn’t stop at the Russian border.

Also, I find it hilarious that taking a bunch of oligarchs’ yachts is going too far, but bombing cities indiscriminately, targeting nuclear power plants and water works, and mass executing civilians and dumping them in ditches in the woods is perfectly acceptable.

At this point, anyone who thinks Russia could do anything but abandon their posts and run like hell in 5 days probably shouldn’t be trusted around anything sharper than a crayon.

Why does Russia and Russians take this.

Because Russia is weak. Look how poorly their military has failed in Ukraine. They have been exposed for pretending to be tough, but being all talk, an no walk.

Supersonic missiles can destroy every major European city in five days.

If they started, NATO missiles would destroy Russia in two days. War over.

Russia lost, now they just need to deal with their Putin problem, then accept that they will be pariahs on the world stage for a generation or two due to their attempt to invade a sovereign nation and take it over.

It's official, Putin is a loser. Shoulda stuck to horse pics Putin, everyone thought you were tough then.

Putin made the most devastatingly fatal error any despot could make: he believed his own propaganda. He became an unquestioning acolyte of his own cult of personality. But like with all religions, faith is nothing when it runs into cold, hard reality.

It’s the reason Xi is giving him the cold shoulder. You can accuse Xi of being many things, but one thing he is NOT is an idiot. He understands perfectly well his power is based on his ability to produce wealth, growth, and economic prosperity. If that fails, there are dozens of other politburo suits ready to take his place. So he’s not about to start throwing his weight and credibility behind the losing prospect of some balding Slavic half pint whose delusions of grandeur have been battered to splinters in Ukraine.
