Unforgivable, a very innocent child shot for no reason other than trick-or-treating in a bumblebee outfit shot and wounded critically. What possible excuse can an animal like that could give in court, mistaken identity? I hope the child survives.

What a surprise. If the crime occurred in foreign country, the forum gets a muted response.

A friend of mine in junior high had a similar experience in one Chicago southside public park bathroom when a black teen came in blasting away at them with a handgun. At the time, they were both taking a leak at the urinals when the killer shot them. My friend's older brother (around 10 years old at the time) was shot and killed while my friend took 2 shots to the abdomen but survived. The shooter was a complete stranger to them and was never caught.

Random violence, shooting & killing, possibly a hate crime. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can get you killed in Chicago.

This little girl, just like my friend, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Rest In Peace

Sceptical that is very unfair of you. Not only are shootings like this a dime a dozen in America, there just isn't anything in the article to comment on except to make the often repeated (and somewhat hollow) statements of sympathy for the victims.

The article even claims she was not shot for any reason at all, but rather was an unintended victim. Its hard to have anything to say about this.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your friends. It is truly a tragic situation but please allow me to amend your last sentence as I don't think that it has only happened in Chicago: Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can get you killed in any place.

Mocheake,

Yeah, that's true. However, there are certain neighborhoods and areas of cities in general where a heightened sense of awareness can go a very long way. One of my problems when I go back to the U.S. after having been in Japan for a long time is losing this awareness, and you're right. Bad things don't just happen in Chicago, but can happen anywhere else and at any time. This girl was shot on Chicago's West Side so she probably shouldn't have been outside at all in that area on Halloween night even with an adult.

Well I'm sorry if you took my words seriously but, that's the way how I see it. If you will read thru the past threads about the domestic crimes or even freak accidents, I mean it is not just sympathetic excerpt, and you will know exactly what I meant. And if you notice the nos. of comments here comparable to the local news, the nos. speak for itself.

The article even claims she was not shot for any reason at all, but rather was an unintended victim. Its hard to have anything to say about this.

I share your views on the last part of your paragraph but, correct me if I'm wrong here. A man and a girl were walking along a street in the Little Village neighborhood when a man in a group of males drew a gun and fired at the victims. The shooter did not fire aimlessly. He took his aim and fired shots with intent of hitting the victims. Unless specifically his targets were a little girl in a bumblebee costume and a man on her side originally, and the victims unfortunately fit the same profile, then and there, they were unintended victims. How may it seems that the shooting was parallel to a random shooting thought it is not reported, the crime itself is far from unmotivated. To shoot someone is an intent and to harm someone is a motivation.

What reason there is for the 7 yr. old girl to be shot other than trick-or-treating or walking along a street in a bumblebee's costume. Not an everyday site.

Norman Goodman,

Yeah, I looked back on that and noticed it was a bit disjointed.

What I was trying to convey was that my friend was together with his older brother at the time when he was shot and severely injured but his older brother died as a result.
