Why is it a disputed name though? China is called by numerous names throughout the world and is not considersd a disputed name apart from the Taiwan conflict.

Translations of a name are a very different thing from changing the name altogether. Unless you think "México" is translated to English as "America" the difference should be clear.

I'm still not sure what exactly is the measurable benefit to the United States in renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America". Mexico, as is Canada and all of Central and South America, is "America". I honestly think Trump is the only one that cares and everyone else is just catering to his whims.

Gulf of America? Never seen it just like I have never seen the West Philippine Sea. To summarize, politicians bloviate.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

fundamentalists, Mexico was a previous Spanish colony. fought a war with america. All about real estate ambitions for his ..... offfspring??

He wanted the Gulf of Trump or the MAGA Gulf, but his staff persuaded him to go with the Gulf of America.

15 ( +21 / -6 )

Why stop there? Let's just call this planet America too. That should keep his ego satisfied for a few days. Americans who didn't vote for a third party have no right to complain about this low IQ child-man.

And it's not just in USA. I can see that name on Google Maps in Japan. Both in English and Japanese. Oh wait, I forgot about US vassal states.

Can you imagine Korea having to call the East Sea the Sea of Japan?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

I hate being the stupid country.

4 ( +14 / -10 )

Seems fine, because the term "America" includes Mexico and Canada.

If Trump wanted to exclude Mexico, he would have called Gulf of the United States of America.

But he didn't. So Mexico is included.

Finally, some sensibility.

It was nonsensical to call things by their historical names? What are you going to do when this is changed right back under DT's successor?

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Seems fine, because the term "America" includes Mexico and Canada.

Based upon that geographic faux pas! Google must have already changed the map So that the continent of North America was already the continent of America, mmh not when I worked in Peru. Continent of South America. flew in and out via mexico city (in cough cough days) MTS, ride the pony into toronto in mid winter. Make Armageddon Great America. Sad Sad.

No big deal because it only references the name for US people.

Everyone else in the world can go on calling it it's historical name which has been in use for over 400 years.

Other cases exist.

Is it the Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf? Most stick with the historical Persian Gulf.

Is it the Sea of Japan or East Sea? Both names are used outside of the region. I grew up in Australia knowing it as the Sea of Japan.

Point being locals can call it whatever they want, but others don't have to follow.

US pretension at its finest, again.

Coward. In the end, history will show those who capitulated to this regime.

Stupid promises made....stupid promises kept

10 ( +15 / -5 )

Dumb.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

It’ll get changed back again.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

nah too minor of a thing.

Nah come on, it's a massive win. You now own loads more saltwater. More Lebensraum!

it’s not as big as your colleagues are making it out to be.

How big is it?

The English Channel is called La Manche by France, just for reference, but the names go back centuries.

Perhaps Google could move Kansas City to the state of Kansas, because that's where President Trump thought it was.

Perhaps Google could move Kansas City to the state of Kansas,

you do know there is also a Kansas City in the state of Kansas dont you?

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

For me it will always be The Gulf of Mexico.

@underworld

*"Seems fine, because the term "America" includes Mexico and Canada."*

So Canada is an adjacent country to the Gulf of Mexico?

Always learning something new, thanks!

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Wow, this whole name change is totally making America great again. Does it mean that America can get more fish from that area? Why did Trump mention that the name change was better than the Super Bowl? That's what he proclaimed as he was riding in his plane over that body of water. Of course, it does mean that if anything bad comes out of the "Gulf of America", like more storms, etc., Trump is to blame for it.

Can you imagine Korea having to call the East Sea the Sea of Japan?

They called it East Sea traditionally but called it Sea of Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was only in 1992 that they wanted everyone else to call it East Sea. Naming of waters is based on geography and does not establish any special rights or ownership.

He's your and Ossan's president. Your country deserves him as president.

I actually hope American can colonize a poor country or a poor part of Canada and stabilize it. It is resource poor but strategically located. Eventual statehood would be beneficial to residents. Name the 51st state Trump and the capital city Donald.

No joke. Trump and Musk can experiment building a model authoritarian state. They’ll do a good job.

The Gulf of Mexico is an internationally recognized

name for the sea. We learned it as such in our junior high school geography class.

Now, the Trump administration wants to rename it as "Gulf of America," in disregard of the internationally accustomed nomenclature.

Should all international norms, such as the metric system, be discarded for each country's own measurement system?

5 ( +8 / -3 )

If you are American and your chest now swells with pride because your president arbitrarily changed the name of an international body of water with the wave of his Sharpie, you're almost certainly too dumb to reproduce.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Trump (to Google execs): Right, here are my next demands. "Canada" to be renamed to "51st state of America". "Mexico" to be renamed to "Beanerland". The world map to be rendered such that the earth is flat. And Gaza to be renamed "Trumpland".

Google execs, a la opening scene of Full Metal Jacket: "Sir, yes sir!"

If your country has enough clout to do it! English units are more human scale, btw.

Another executive order that does absolutely nothing to help the american people pay their bills and groceries.

Continuing with revenge naming, Greenland could refer to the US as South Greenland, and require Google to show both names, and Mexico could refer to the American South as the Mexican North. The sky is the limit.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The US is becoming a basket case, isn't it. It's a global joke with this guy in charge, the guy they have collectively chosen to best represent them.

He's their pick to model their national character to the rest of us, and it sure don't pass the sniff test.

It's a messy media grabbing, attention seeking cantered circus.

Yuck.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

It’ll get changed back again.

Maybe, if Democrats get back in power, but the way they are ranting at the moment, and them unwilling to change their ways and look more into why they lost, they won't win another election anytime soon, they lost too many of their largest constituents Blacks and Latinos, so they have a lot of soul-searching to do.

Continuing with revenge naming, Greenland could refer to the US as South Greenland, and require Google to show both names, and Mexico could refer to the American South as the Mexican North. The sky is the limit.

They could in theory, but that's not going to happen since we are the ones that keep the entire continent safe.

US pretension at its finest, again.

I do think the name has a nicer ring to it, geographically makes more sense to change the name.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Should all international norms, such as the metric system, be discarded for each country's own measurement system?

yeah we don’t use the metric system either.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

The US is becoming a basket case, isn't it. It's a global joke with this guy in charge, the guy they have collectively chosen to best represent them.

If you ask the average person if they care, they would probably tell you they don't. many Americans feel that there are many countries outside of the US that are basketcases as well, it goes both ways and I don't think those countries care what we think as well, so it's all good, we all have our opinions.

He's their pick to model their national character to the rest of us, and it sure don't pass the sniff test.

But they have to deal with it, that's it, even if the people don't (the leaders do)

It's a messy media grabbing, attention seeking cantered circus.

Yuck.

Naw, I love a disrupter, this is what we need, the status quo has been screwing the nation for too, too long. it is finally coming to an end.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

Does this mean Google is becoming a government mouthpiece? Will this lead to Google News being as selective, reliable and honest as Pravda was in Soviet days?

The world believes it is the Gulf of Mexico. A map should not change the name just because one man wants it to: it should use universally accepted names.

What is more disturbing is Google including Google News is following Trump's orders? Will Google also prioritise searches to please him, hide items that displease him?

It seems to be time to move to another search engine, and not an American one.
