It’s not a “plan” in the sense of getting actual legislation passed. It’s more of a grievance cry to the xenophobic base for the election.

Central American migrants seeking asylum to enter the U.S. Growing numbers of them have been trying to get asylum status in recent years.

The Dems wanted to start the process of immigration reform in 2013, but republicans rejected that attempt.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Trump had zero experience in politics before running for president in 2016 and already the country is way better off than it was 2 years ago.

Headline misleading. ONE senator questioned one part of it. Considering that one person is actually Susan Collins, few care. Oh and a “republican official” (who?) claims some (who?) weren’t impressed.

Yes, because the Dems didn’t want to close the loopholes that have created this problem. They weren’t for ending catch and release, ending chain migration, ending the visa lottery program or birthright citizenship, so they rejected it.

A merit based system makes sense to the host country. The question of whether picking the best, brightest and trained from poorer countries who desperately need them being the right thing to do is a different issue.

The quality of liberal responses is seriously lacking now that “but Russia!” or “mueller is coming” can’t be worked into a response.

Just bitterness and complaining not about policy or decisions but just about people you don’t like. If you don’t like Kushner or his plan, where is the Dem plan?

Erm, no. The question of whether it’s right to pick the best from developing countries is an idea which has been discussed on the left and the right. It also doesn’t follow that you then take in the hardest cases.

They have been wanting an end to these loopholes since Mid 90’s. Don’t give me that and since Obama was in office when the Dems proposed it, there was nothing in the language of the bill of what mentioned before was even being considered or enforced.

Skill sets, what you can offer the country, what for an asset you can be, the desire to work hard, carry yourself, not being a burden on the taxpayer, or even joining the armed services for a few years, complete your education.

Yup, can’t argue with that, seems reasonable and logical to me.

The topic never mattered before. Everything was simply directed back into the direction of Russia or Mueller.

Now that there is no choice but to have discussion about policies and solutions, I find the dialogue lacking.

What is wrong with a merit based immigration system? Why can’t we get rid of chain migration? Why would a Republican immigration solution have the protections for DACA they Collins is looking for? That was a Dem program they can protect those illegally admitted under it.

Advisor to the President presents an opening list of ideas around immigration to his party for comments and feedback. Isn't that they way politics is supposed to work?

Then the Reps will discuss it with the guys across the chamber, hear lots of outrage for not including DACA. They will leave that out for a long time as is it going to be used for the final "give" so Dems can agree.

I think immigration should be for people who have jobs waiting that will pay 200%+ of the going rate for the position, so more taxes will be collected and companies have a strong incentive to hire locally first. Using immigration for cheap labor is a problem. It screws over the people here already doing the work.

Dems want open borders to supply new voters for a future Socialist America - which is not doubt a matter of decades from now. Too many Republicans want cheap labor regardless of its current impact on citizens on the low end of the wage scale and whether or not it destroys our Constitutional form of government. They are incapable of putting the countries interests over their ideological goals.

A good percentage of Americans want a regularized immigration system similar to other first world nations that is centered on what’s best for their countries and social stability.

America will get more and more homeless living on the streets of its major cities like the disaster in San Francisco - a Third World living within a First World nation. Throw in a crippling national and city debt crisis and you’re got an ungovernable mess. That’s America’s future.

The Democrats will ultimately get their open borders - it’s practically open already. But will have a disaster on its hands with no ability to pay for the Socialism it thinks could deal with it.

Legal immigrants to the USA come when they have jobs waiting or have savings and skills to get a position. In my field, lots of legal immigrants come, usually from Asia, and get a company to sponsor their work VISA. There are laws which say they have to be paid the same as other workers, but in jobs where 60-80%+ are foreign workers who were extremely deceptive on their CVs, the pay is always less than an American would accept. The companies are violating existing US law.

What this says is that republicans wanted political points instead of beginning to reform immigration. This is a clear example of party over country. Republicans are pro open borders, which is evidenced by them opposing immigration reform twice in 2013. This also tells us their current outrage over immigration is wholly manufactured.

This is all a moot point - the last six years of Republican actions have shown they will NEVER pass any legislation that threatens their open-borders policy.

But paying immigrants twice what a citizen can get wouldn't work. If I'm a citizen offered any position with any company under a law like that... pay negotiations would start with... "I think it's a good offer. Double it." And those companies that are violating existing law would still violate the law. Maybe some sort of registry that companies had to use to select from available and suitable applicants, with a requirement to show the job had been advertised to locals first. It'd be a hell a lot of bureaucracy though.

Someone doesn’t know that Dems have been playing the long game since Teddy Kennedy’s 60’s era immigration reform measures. The very same laws that led to the Reagan era crisis of illegals and the very same crisis that became abundantly clear a mere 20 years later.

Don’t worry- America will in the long run become the ever increasingly bifurcated super rich / super poor Socialist paradise that the Dems have been striving for since Progressives began militating for it more than a century ago. America’s largest cities are on the leading edge - huge numbers of the homeless, a struggling and polarized middle, with a cadre of super wealthy at the top constantly seeking to devise solutions for the problems their previous solutions created.
