Sh-h-h Al, these nay-sayers call that a natural cycle.

I am a supporter of the belief that global warming/climate change is and will continue unless we mitigate human's effect to the climate. < :-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Extinction of the human race will be a good thing for the global ecology, although it will take a few hundred million years to get over it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

beelzebub: you didn't see "Life After People" on the History channel? Its much faster than that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Beelze. Isn't that sad? Certainly humans are the only thing on the planet that can solve this problem. Unfortunately, humans are creating the problem and also unfortunately, human irresponsibility will doom many species and habitats also.

Clearly, the responsible course is for humans to right this wrong and show that humans are not just a virus. Humanity must beat this. If humans can do it, they deserve to continue. If not, they deserve to become extinct.

Regarding the article, I want to underline the credibility of Mark Serreze in Boulder. The other guys are a lot closer to politics than Mark is. He is a skeptical, reasonable guy who has seen all the data and has constantly presented what he thinks is an unbiased estimate. Anybody ever played in a football pool? Somebody always wins. Guys like Mark usually win. Look at Mark's attitude, then look at Gore's. Mark is picking the Colts to win the Superbowl. Gore is taking the Bengals.

Mark Serreze is not trying to scare anyone, but look at what he says, and it is plenty scary enough.

Gore says polar ice may go in 5 years

But aren't there more polar bears than a half century ago?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Extinction of the human race will be good for the global ecology"

Oh my...

"Unfortunately humans are creating the problem"

Unfortunately, some people still believe that human activity is significantly altering the climate.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No Sarge, unfortunately some people still believe that human activity doesn't alter climate change. < :-)

New computer modeling suggests...

That's all one needs to read!

BTW, the title mentions the disappearance of polar ice but the article focuses on the Arctic. However, the other pole seems to be growing, and it accounts for 90 percent of the Earth's ice.

About Antarctica: "A paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded."

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes Sabiwabi, computers are crap things that can't do anything right! So, please stop using yours, haha. I doubt you can stay more than 2 hours away from it.

What I saw on TV is that the center of Antartic is indeed getting cooler, on the other hand its outer borders are melting away.

Anyway, I am curious about this article to be published by the BAS. Either computers are wrong or British scientists are truly geniuses.

Gore is a nutcase and should be arrested and put on trial for the biggest scam of the century. The religion of "Man made Global Warming" is a total scam, a lie. The recent emails from the "scientits" prove that, along with all the other misinformation. Gore is a liar. He hasnt a clue what he is talking about.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What I saw on TV is that the center of Antartic is indeed getting cooler, on the other hand its outer borders are melting away.

I believe ice is melting only in parts of west Antarctica, overall its expanding, not shrinking.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

realist: Gore is a nutcase and should be arrested and put on trial for the biggest scam of the century.

You have an odd sense of the ranking of scams. If this is a scam, it would be annoying, but its not getting anyone killed. If I am going to get scammed, I much prefer this one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge; Great post buddy. This data is fabricated so money grabbing guys like Gore can hoodwink the world into panic.

Warming is not man made, it is due to normal climatic cycles and mother nature. I have studied this with other church elders and we can conclude without doubt, that man made global warming is a myth.

I am not saying teh world has not warmed but recent data says it is cooling and there was a massive snowstorm in the States. Seems kinda strange eh! What do the global warming conspiracists have to say about that!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hey, people are going to make money from this even if only a handful of the mandates are set.... I'm beyond caring if its real or not anymore..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Step Right Up!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

numbskull Unfortinately, you are wrong. People ARE being killed by this scam. Gore and these other data-maniuplating scientists whould be tried before the International Criminal Courts. Thousands have died in several countries because of food shortages caused by the actions of the UN Climate Change Council. These evi;l people, for their own Left-wing political goal of setting up a World Communist Government, have decided that countries like the USA should devote one third of their farmland to probucing "bio fules" thus causing world food prices to double and causing starvation in amny countries. We never hear about the food riots in plafces like Nicaragua - caused as a direct result of this massive global deception. Gore and his "scientist" cronies have a lot to answer for. Bring him to the Courts and try him for fraud and mass murder.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh - and there are leaked dpocuments on the internet suggesting that if these vevil people get their way at Copenhagen, another thing they are considering is poisoning the water supply to "reduce the worlds population" and ".reduce childbirth." Gores ideas of the melting icecaps are pure drivel. Why is Greenland called "Greenland?" Because it used to be GREEN. Climate Change has nothing whatsoever to do with the actions of human beings. It is a natural cycle, a natural phenomenon. There is nothing that man can do about it. The data and the computer models these "scientists" use only go back 150 years, and ignore the so-called "Little Ice Age a few centuries ago, and also several periods in history where the earth was a lot warmer. In Roman times, there were vineyards in Scotland and the north of England! There is a definate evil political agenda to curtail our freedoms here. Gore is a dangerous liar.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge... are we going to share OH MY? Or are you going to put a little TM next to it? Maybe I could use OH MY, and you could use OMAE! or something like that.

Sabiwabi: I will look for that article. Thanks. By the way, that is area, what about volumetric measures? Hmm. Maybe the article will tell me what you can't.

"..there was a massive snowstorm in the States." This is classic DickMorris. The scientists must be wrong because..... Dick, who will you blame when you are wrong? Or are you ever wrong? Here is a fun link for Dick Morris, who seems to be interested in today's weather. Read about the the effects of a cold snap and what causes them. Chilling....

Well, it looks like the usual parade of personalities here. I have said it before: we will all be believers eventually. People will deny and resist as long as they can for whatever reason, or for no reason. The persuasive voice is not Al Gore's, it is the guy from Boulder who is calmly and efficiently basing his entire career on his estimate, and sticking to it. He is not running around screaming that the sky is falling, he is just quietly watching it fall. That is the guy I want to buy umbrellas from.

It would appear that Gore was either economical with the truth or scr*wed up. Either way he was wrong.

However when the idea of man made global warming first came about the MAJORITY of scientists disbelieved the theory. Now the MAJORITY believe it. Given that it's a total scam, how can you explain that?

Perhaps Gore isn't the only one who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about?

This was a george bush effort. he's the one who pushed for corn based bio-fuels. It was just a couple of years ago when food prices on corn based foods skyrocketed.

It also cost so much to create these bio-fuels that we're polluting and costing more then we're saving. This turned out to be a bust. < :-)

Moderator: Back on topic please. The subject is Al Gore's comments on polar ice.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Keep the ice breaking research vessels out of the Arctic, and maybe the ice will remain...Gore is no authority on global warming anyway, so he should just practice silence...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"There is a definate evil political agenda to curtail our freedoms here. Gore is a dangerous liar."

Oh my! Enjoying our freedoms are we?

Gore is making some money, I guess, but he could probably do better writing books about election fraud and his thoughts about Sarah Palin, don't you think? I have posted before that I am not such a fan of Al and Tipper, but if it takes someone believing in ManBearPig to motivate Americans to so much as recycle a tin can, then more power to him. Americans are being sloppy and lazy with their resources. Their parks are going to pot, Alaskan oil is ALREADY running out, and they are not making even minimal efforts to control their spew of carbon and toxic waste. If Americans can't do it for the world, they should do it for themselves. Gas taxes could end dependence on mideast oil and save US highways from decrepitude. Emissions controls limit CO2, but also limit emissions of poison gases. Conserving energy kills many birds with one stone. Can Americans do something? We are past the point of expecting the US to really LEAD the world community, but can it do SOMETHING to show it is part of the world community? Anything? I wonder.

Uncle Sam needs to put down the cheetos, get off the couch, turn off the TV, and go out and do something for a change. Picking up the trash and recycling it would be a good start. It sure couldn't hurt. Other countries have been doing it for years, and it hasn't hurt their economies.

Moderator: And do you have an opinion on the polar ice? That is the main subject of this discussion.

I usually prefer to stay out of discussion that delves this deep into a void of intelligence, however if you would take the time to read the AP Impact article regarding the 1700 emails, you will find that those emails prove nothing. Please do your research and read the emails yourself.

Gores ideas of the melting icecaps are pure drivel.

The artic icecap is melting though. The causes are disputed. Even if the process is mostly natural, if we are adding to it, even just a bit, I would rather not add to it as it may buy us time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Look, you guys that are against this, give it up. It's going through. its best you start looking into how you are going to benefit from it. there is a whole new market now.... I missed that dot com boom before bubble, I ain't missing this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Gore is just an opportunist but I believe human has an impact on the environment. Thinking that we can pollute as much as we want is irresponsible. Believing this is a crypto-communist conspiracy is complete nonsense.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If Gore is so worried about disappearing ice caps brought on by manmade global warming, perhaps he should start reducing his carbon footprint on the world.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ramen - There's no chance of that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If global warming didnt exist we would have to invent it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

RomeoRamenII: If Gore is so worried about disappearing ice caps brought on by manmade global warming, perhaps he should start reducing his carbon footprint on the world.

Math. Not a Replican strong point. Look, if Gore creates the carbon footprint of ten men, but campaigns for a reduction to the tune of 10,000 men, he would be in clear by 9,990 men's carbon footprint. In other words, he has not only taken YOU to the mat, but rammed you through the floor, through the ground, through the Earth's crust and mantle and you are now but a speck of dust at the core of the Earth.

Gore is not shooting for little gestures to please the mathematically challenged. He is shooting for results. He is dealing with factories, the world's greatest polluters by far, not the small potatoes of the individual so much.

Long ago I image that people argued over the world being round or flat. Standing in a tower above the city looking at the world curving away over the horizon, some people still insisted that the world was flat. Until something proved them wrong.

Warming is real people. If we are 100% responsible or just contributing, it is real and it has very real consequences for humanity. With that in mind, what does it hurt to take precautions and to try to lesson our potential impact? I mean if someone says you can take a shot to prevent a serious disease, most of you would be first in line to get it. Why then is it so hard for you to support plans to reduce our environmental impact?

The flat earth crowd love to attack the data while ignoring what is going on around the world in hard evidence. They think about profits and money today and don't give a damn about consequences tomorrow. This is why we have so many problems with the environment and with our economy. Too many people have vision that stops a few months into the future.

Reality is that warming will raise sea levels regardless of who is causing it. That means the potential displacement of millions world wide. Add this to all the other issues around climate change and we all end up paying dearly for it in the ver near future.

Oil companies are happy to see the polar ice go, then they can start drilling. Do you think they will tell you the truth?

Too many naive short sighted people too selfish to care about the future and too blind to see that something must be done. Foolishness of this magnitude may be the end of us all.

Sceptics will start believing only when shortage of food hit their tables.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Or water floods out there NY, LA, SF, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong etc... homes and favorite shopping areas.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How funny that the scientist on whose work Gore bases his claim says he never said such a thing: Maslovski said: ""it is unclear to me how this figure was arrived at. I would never try to estimate likelyhood at anything as exact as this."

oops...

But the media never picked up on that. The show goes on...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Lostinnagoya:

" Sceptics will start believing only when shortage of food hit their tables. "

You mean like the tortilla riots in Mexico, based on the US "biofuel" subsidies? No argument there. Idiotic political actions based on false global warming claims will cause disruptions in the food supply.... and are already.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

numbskull:

" The artic icecap is melting though. "

Not according to the folks at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen Norway (NERS). According to them, the arctic ice cap has been GROWING for the last 3 years... to the tune of an increase of 1,000,000 sqare km MORE than in 2007. So who do you believe? Al Gore and his gravy train, or the scientists who study this stuff professionally?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Propaganda has never been more effective than it is right now in 2009. Orwell got it wrong in thinking that the state and powerful people would need to impose propaganda on the masses. In reality people just eat up whatever gets aired. Most of that is generated by interests who want you to continue to consume, consume, consume and buy til you drop.

They are counting on you being too self centered to see beyond your own greed, lust, whims or hunger. And in the end it works on a level that no propaganda minister in history could have imagined.

The base reality is this. If there is a chance we are causing climate change, then we should adjust our behavior. We already know we are poisoning the planet in other ways and that if warming isn't the problem some other environmental issues are.

So why not do the right thing and take every precaution? Would it kill you to walk sometimes instead of driving, or turn down the aircon a little? Or just don't use so much trash producing stuff?

You people are pathetic in that you think it is ok to ignore the obvious negative impacts we have on the planet just because of one news story. Maybe humanity deserves to perish so the rest of the planet can survive. Because most of you are too egocentric and blind to see that you harm the world and too lazy or self deluded to change your ways.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

tokind:

" In reality people just eat up whatever gets aired. "

As proven by the the believers in warming....

" You people are pathetic in that you think it is ok to ignore the obvious negative impacts we have on the planet "

I don´t know who "you people" are, but nobody says anyone should "ignore obvious negative impacts". Fact is there is nothing "obvious" about the claims made by Al Gore et al, and nothing logical about their proposed "solutions", which really look more like a giant power grab than anything else.

The standing applause that Hugo Chaves got in Copenhagen was really telling...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You people are pathetic in that you think it is ok to ignore the obvious negative impacts we have on the planet

Yes, humans do have a negative impact on the planet, we should make every effort to pollute less. But CO2 is not a pollutant, plants need it.

So why not do the right thing and take every precaution?

What Gore wants to impose is going to cost us dearly, and won't do anything for global warming. The human contribution to global warming is not significant.

Would it kill you to walk sometimes instead of driving, or turn down the aircon a little? Or just don't use so much trash producing stuff?

Yes, these are all good things you're suggesting, but that is not what Gore and his friends want.
