For those not in tune with maritime events, busy confined waterways like the Turkish Straits, Singapore Straits, Straits of Malacca, Straits of Homuz and all experience a steady drumbeat of collisions and allisions (yes, these are different things). In fact a tanker went aground in the Suez Canal yesterday in the same spot the Ever Given grounded.

Steering failures in ships are not uncommon. When they happen in blue water it is not usually a crisis but when they happen in a busy strait the results often make the evening news. Here is one of the more spectacular allisions in the Turkish Straits.
