It's only a matter of time until the human infestation (there's no other word for it with 7 billion of us) receives a proper malthusian event. Not sure if this will be it or not, time will tell.

“We think this virus is more transmissible to humans than H5N1,” he said, referring to the strain the WHO estimates has killed more than 360 people globally since 2003."
360 people in 10 years. I'd be worried if that figure had several more zeros.

It can spread around the world very easily. Ah the wonders of modern transportation. A Pandemic could do it in four days. So far we have ben lucky. Someday we will not be lucky. Over crowded areas are wonderful places for a plague to get a good start. Poor people make wonderful incubators as always. But once it gets a god start it will no longer matter and plague can be very democratic.

It's not a question of "if", only "when". One of these days the jig will be up.

Lets hope travelers are VERY cautious in China and Taiwan and it spreads no more and subsides.

Surf O'Holic, yea, I believe the number of regular U.S. flu deaths is about 30,000 per year.
The fact that the rate of infection is slowing is a very good sign, just as long as it not a result of under reporting of the actual figures or undiagnosed cases.

I wouldn't take this lightly. Back in 1918, 50 to 100 million people died during an influenza pandemic. The more people that get infected, the more likely the virus will mutate into an extremely virulent strain.

I'm not going to China or Taiwan anytime soon. Guess it is only a matter of time before some tourist or businessperson brings this to Japan....

It's playing out just like the movie Contagion.
maglev101
maybe the birds that the virus came from migrated from japan to china?
maglev101
i might be wrong, but i think back in 1918, medical science wasn't as good as it is now.

China, Taiwan maybe next Japan. Set a quarantine zone in the Senkaku. That will solve some problems...
