I would like to condemn harassment such as this, but it puts me on the same side as neocons, Islamophobes and people who want minarets outside of Saudi Arabia torn down.

I would like to condemn harassment such as this, but it puts me on the same side as neocons, Islamophobes and people who want minarets outside of Saudi Arabia torn down." Because you would prefer to be with the right wing zealots who prefer to use violence as a means, jail and even kill people who are homosexual, make you believe in a god and on only one terms - won't let you convert out, disallow you to have rights, and in going back to the article, actually jail/stone women once they have been harassed or even raped. By all means stay on that side of the fence.

This occurs not only in the "Arabic" world, but in the entire islamic world. The inferior place for women and their limitation of access to public life is part of the doctrine.

But, unsurprisingly, the article is carefully written to avoid the "i" word.

Also no mention of Taliban means problem is there and they have no solution.

You know, WilliB has a point. Not all Arabs are Muslim. Most of the non-Muslims I've come across are real cool. I personally think men who treat women this way are weak.

“He hissed at me and kept asking me if I wanted to go with him to a quieter area, and to give him my phone number,” said Madbouli, a mother of two. “This is a national security issue.

chill out. according to this lady there is a massive national security issue in japan right now, specifically in the minato-ku area of Tokyo.

It will take time especially in this part of the world to absorb the gender mixture and the role each gender can play in society

Heh, it's almost 2010. How much more time do the Arabs need to catch up with the rest of the world?

Why don't they just have separate train carriages for men and women, like we do in Japan?

I think some of this is do to the fact women are so isolated. It is like children and alcohol. If you tell them they shouldn't drink then they become curious and more likely to drink.

For these men who live in suppressed cultures. They almost never have the opportunity to meet women. When they do they have a very short time to put it all out there in hopes the woman is interested. If not they have to be well off to acquire an arranged marriage.

Unfortunately, this lack of interaction means they have not become sophisticated enough to meet women without scaring them half to death. Like the Japanese truck driver peeing in the woman's mailbox. It is sometimes quite extreme. Like many things in life total suppression which many religions try to sell is not the solution.

I would like to condemn harassment such as this, but...

What a cop out. The treatment of women in Islamic, but especially Arab societies, is expressly against everything that feminists have been fighting for since women won the right to vote. Anybody who thinks that they can abdicate their responsibility to resist this kind of abuse puts them on the side of the abusers. This type of thing is wrong. If the neocons and the left agree on it then the only thing left to discuss is the methods used to end it.

Besides, any culture that throws out half of it's intellectual capability is doomed to failure. This is probably why the Arab world is mired in a feudal system. Islam needs a reformation the way the Catholic church got hammered by Luther, et. al. Until that happens expect the Arab world to be a backwater with oil. If it wasn't for oil they wouldn't be worth spit.

In the meantime you all better buy fuel efficient vehicles. Put up or shut up.

I dont get it, why arent women across the globe taking up arms against these neanderthals? Feminists in a niqab? Where is Hilary? Has feminism gone PC? Could this be a reason to redifine the mission in Iraq and Afpak?

The veil can be seen as a certain sign of a willingness to submit to men, and therefore an invitation to harassment. A 90% rate of abuse in a place like Yemen pretty much proves it.

Where are all the human rights people when it comes to these nations that regard women as something less than human??? Guess money talks...

Christian Arabs do not treat their women like that. Conversely, Indonesians in Aceh (where islamic Sharia has been adopted) do.

Christian Philippinos do not treat their women like this. Muslim Philippons in Mindoro do.

Buddhist Thais do not. Southern Thais, in the islamic areas, do.

You can continue this list as long as you want, the same pattern emerges.

This is not "Arab" issue, this is islam.

Pfft. This is like saying the veil doesnt actually work, or that it doesnt convey modesty but instead it brings out the worst in men.
