Harris' debate plan: Goad Trump, call out lies, create social media moments

By Jeff Mason and Nandita Bose

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is preparing for her highly anticipated Sept 10 debate with Donald Trump by focusing on ways to unnerve the Republican candidate and draw attention to his frequent falsehoods on policies and recent history, all with an eye toward social media, aides and advisers say.Harris, the Democratic nominee, last appeared on a debate stage in 2020 against then-Vice President Mike Pence, a night heavy on policy discussions and punctuated by Harris' rebuke of Pence's interruptions, yet probably remembered by most American voters for the fly that photobombed the event.

This time, Harris plans to focus on what her team calls Trump's failures on the U.S. border wall, infrastructure and the COVID-19 pandemic, while hoping to avoid getting pulled into personal attacks, they said.

For their part, Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have attacked Harris and President Joe Biden for inflation, the high number of illegal immigrants crossing on the U.S. southern border and economic proposals they say will drive up government spending. More COVID deaths occurred during Biden's term than Trump's, after Biden lost political battles over masking and vaccines.

Trump's personal attacks on Harris have escalated as she has edged ahead of him in national opinion polls since Biden was pushed out of the presidential race on July 21 after a disastrous performance in the June debate.

Harris has delivered a handful of policy-focused speeches but U.S. voters will be watching closely for more details.

"Independents in swing states still need and want to hear more detailed policy proposals from her," said Republican strategist Rina Shah. "She will also need to hit back at Trump ... with facts, figures, and data on what he got wrong during his administration."

How Harris interacts with Trump, who has repeated his false claims that he won the 2020 election, is another point of interest.

"She should let him talk over her. Not just let him, but goad him into spouting insane conspiracy theories about the previous election," veteran Democratic strategist James Carville wrote in a New York Times opinion article on Wednesday.

Harris' team believes the debate will be watched by many as video clips on social media platforms like TikTok and X, and will be looking for ways to create moments that people want to share. That includes trying to push Trump into saying things he shouldn't say, two sources said, such as potentially inflammatory or offensive remarks.

CLINTON AIDE PLAYS TRUMP

Harris has been conducting mock debates for the prime-time face-off with Philippe Reines, a longtime adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He has played the role before.

For several days before the matchup, Harris will park herself on Pennsylvania's western border in Pittsburgh, doing a mix of campaign events there before flying to Philadelphia for her first encounter with the former president.

President Barack Obama, who has been informally advising Harris, followed a similar strategy in 2012 when he was running for reelection, basing himself in the swing state of Nevada for days of prep ahead of his first debate with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Denver.

Harris' campaign has been seeking to get under Trump's skin since she became the Democratic standard-bearer, calling him "weird," a term Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, first wielded against the Republican.

Her campaign expects the debate to be important but not necessarily move the needle in terms of how it affects public perceptions of the former president.

Trump's June debate demeanor against Biden was more measured and disciplined than some of his past performances.

One Biden adviser, speaking to Reuters, expressed concern that Harris was getting overprepared, just as Biden was stuffed with statistics and numbers he stumbled over at the debate lectern.

Seems sound, but he did that at the last debate.

Harris needs to clap back with some of that focused questioning she did in Senate Committee hearings.

Like when Trump recently said he has the right to interfere in elections.

Trumps arguments about the border can easily be rebuffed by simply pointing out there was a bi-partisan deal agreed to that among other things, would have provided 1500 additional patrol officers. It was a done deal - many republicans helped author and signed off on it (it was widely reported at the time as well) but then Trump at the last minute told them to kill the deal, as it would look bad for him if the Dems were able to pass the bill. He said this publicly by the way and the main Republican sponsor of the bill has publicly said "Trump killed" the bill. There are many other republicans who have publicly stated the bill should of been passed.

The inflation argument is not good either - every country on the planet experienced high inflation due to all that covid relief money, and then of course shipping costs went through the roof for everybody as well. No country avoided this. The US is actually in a very very good position with regards to inflation compared to most other countries (ie Australia) so I don't see how this is a winning argument either.

If Trumps goes on about crime, again, this is a losing argument. Official statistics show violent crime was up under Trump compared to Biden (Buttigeig pointed this out on Fox news much to their embarrassment), so unless he is going to argue the figures are fake, what else are his main points against Kamala?

She could just quote him saying he “lost by a whisker”. Even he admits it now. The game is up chumps.

Will Trump to claim Russia, China and Iran have the right to interfere in elections to help him again? With so few US Americans willing to support him, he needs all the help he can get. He's got the big tech billionaires and their media backing him, now he needs more help from the axis of totalitarianism and their media.

The only single recorded interview that Kamala Harris has, to date, attempted is with a fawning Dana Bash,

Barely 18-minutes, bookended with CNN editorial nauseous sycophancy.

To then rhetorically stuff the broadcast with a veritable “smorgasbord” unintelligible cackling gibberish, with Walz 90% a preforming political lifeguard/nodding donkey.

When called upon, to then mumble incoherently embarrassingly attempting to explain justify his stolen valour.

Review the first three paragraphs to this Thomson Reuters piece.

Kamala Harris could take the opportunity to promote the Harris agenda, the Harris manifesto, to give full insight to the US electorate, the Harris policy portfolio, for Harris in high office, President of the United States, the first black/Indian/Jamaican/Asian woman.

Yet Harris ducks and dives, excuse after excuse, mics on, mics off, let there be “notes”, what next tape Donald Trumps mouth shut, lock him up before the November vote?

The Harris campaign has duplicitously refused all press conference, any possibility of a challenging confrontational interview.

Any danger of a moment that the US voting electorate can scrutinize the freebee tax payer funded pledges and promises, any examination of Harris appalling incompetent record in office.

Harris is a empty shell.

The way Trump has been spiraling down these past few weeks, I doubt if he can make it half-way through the debate before they have to carry him off...

What's he going to say, that Harris "was mean" to Mike Pence again?

The debate moderators need to put Trump on the spot - like the previous ones haven't...

"Mr Trump, does life begin at conception? Yes or no"

"Do you still believe the COVID vaccine is "safe" and that all your supporters should take it? Yes or no"...

"Are EVs a "hoax" or are they "fantastic"?

"Is RFK Jr a "Liberal Lunatic" or someone you "like and respect?

"Did your campaign receive an illegal $10 million in "duffel bags" from Egypt in 2016? Yes or no"...

"Did you instruct your aides at MAL to re-hide classified documents under subpoena to a different location and then destroy the security tapes showing that? Yes or no...

Trump's June debate demeanor against Biden was more measured and disciplined than some of his past performances.

Nah that was only because Biden could only come up with a shell-shocked expression and canned responses to Trump's torrent of lies and accusations.

See how Trump reacted to Harris' questioning of his officials in the senate.

And you can rebuff that by closely looking at what a disaster the bill was and thankfully Trump killed it in its sleep.

ALLOWS UP TO 1.8 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS TO ENTER BEFORE TEMPORARILY CLOSING PARTS OF THE BORDER: The Secretary of Homeland Security is only required to shut down the border if there are 5,000 average illegal crossings over a consecutive seven-day period or 8,500 in a single day. The Secretary may shut down the border if crossings are at 4,000 daily average over a consecutive seven-day period. Even during a border emergency, this bill requires the administration to process a minimum of 1,400 illegal immigrants a day. This is 400 more per day than Obama's DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said constituted a crisis in 2019. (SEC. 244B)

CODIFIES CATCH AND RELEASE: Gives the Secretary of Homeland Security unchecked authority to release an alien into the United States under ineffective "alternatives to detention." The illegals only have to express

"credible fear" of persecution or the intent to apply for "protection determination." (SEC. 235B)

Which would mean, all of them.

Not what your fellow conservative Repub Senator Jim Lankford says...

“The border security bill will put a huge number of new enforcement tools in the hands of a future administration and push the current Administration to finally stop the illegal flow. The bill provides funding to build the wall, increase technology at the border, and add more detention beds, more agents, and more deportation flights. The border security bill ends the abuse of parole on our southwest border that has waived in over a million people. It dramatically changes our ambiguous asylum laws by conducting fast screenings at a higher standard of evidence, limited appeals, and fast deportation.

“New bars to asylum eligibility will stop the criminal cartels from exploiting our currently weak immigration laws. The bill also has new emergency authorities to shut down the border when the border is overrun, new hiring authorities to quickly increase officers, and new hearing authorities to quickly apply consequences for illegal crossings. It changes our border from catch and release to detain and deport.

“Our immigration laws have been weak for years. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to close our open border and give future administrations the effective tools they need to stop the border chaos and protect our nation.”

Official statistics show violent crime was up under Trump compared to Biden (Buttigeig pointed this out on Fox news much to their embarrassment), so unless he is going to argue the figures are fake, what else are his main points against Kamala?

Well the numbers are interesting.

And it all depends on where you like to start.

If we start in 2016 when Trump took office, the number of violent crimes was at a 3 year high but lower than the first year of Obama's second term.

After 2016 crime during Trump's term violent crime dropped every year untill 2020 when another peak high as Biden took over the rate was near identical as when Trump took office in 2016 and dropped to again nearly identical number each year and again 2023 the numbers jumped up, now 2024 numbers dropped in the first 6 months and this on a single stat, murderers are way down, but Rape, assaults, etc..are actually up murder dropped 33% and this is why violent crime for 2024 up to now makes it seem that crime is down, but rape up by 9% , assaults up by the same.

So as I said very interesting because the first year of Trump's term and that of Biden's the numbers are nearly identical and the next 3 years of each president are nearly mirrors of each other.

Where things are different is theft as more and more places now refuse to even respond to certain crimes like in California where businesses can no longer even call the police from shoplifting a sudden massive drop in these crimes, so if you stop responding and taking reports I guess that is one way to lower crime stats.

So basically they are both right and both wrong, they just choose at which stats or which point to start doing the comparison.

Have you actually watched or listened to her?

Yes but not as often as I've read all this parroted stuff about cackling and having no policies.

"He’s a shell filled with solid waste."

Makes him more dense against lib attacks

You agree he's filled with solid waste?

He’s an idiot.

Managed to survive bankruptcies, restructure, make a comeback, successful TV for 14 years straight, compete and win the Presidency despite all attacks from the swamp and was able to thwart every lib and establishment attack, raise money and retain his wealth, not bad actually for an idiot.

How much help did he get from his dad?

"He’s a liar. "

Who isn't

So if Trump says something in the debate that you know is a lie what will you think?

Have you? Or is Trump now lying when he says they are "fantastic"?

R&R: his ability to stand his ground, could bring about compromise

The above suggests 'compromise' has a different meaning in the poster's idiolect. Not surprising when many far right extremists misunderstand 'majority' and half'

Just like in 2016 and 2020, Trump is getting backing and help from his BFF in the Kremlin in 2024...

"The Department of Justice indicted two employees of the state-backed Russian media company RT on Wednesday, saying they funded and directed the coverage of a U.S. conservative media outlet in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act."

"The indictment alleges that two Russians, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, funneled nearly $10 million into the U.S. media company as part of a Kremlin-backed effort to influence American audiences, and says they failed to register as agents of a foreign government as required by law."

Harris' debate plan: Goad Trump, call out lies, create social media moments

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is preparing for her highly anticipated Sept 10 debate with Donald Trump by focusing on ways to unnerve the Republican candidate and draw attention to his frequent falsehoods on policies and recent history

Excuse me, they’re both “liars” (welcome to the world of politics, my friends), but while Trump distorts reality in an attempt to defend himself from an extremely biased media (note that, when it comes to the job of POTUS, Trump has been clear about his policies and has always kept his promises), Kamala hides and lies about what she intends to do for the American people (so, which is more/less dangerous?).

Most elections depend on which candidate seems more trustworthy to voters; Kamala is a flip-flopper, she changes her accent depending on who she's talking to and avoids reporters by pretending to be on the phone—you can't tell me with a straight face that she's trustworthy (in other words, she's fake.. AND incompetent); —I’ll say it (again), some people vote emotionally, others vote rationally. Fact.

Trump / JD Vance: 37 interviews; Kamala / Walz: 1 (softball) interview—the debate will finally be the hostile environment that Kamala has been desperately trying to avoid.

"Harris' campaign has been seeking to get under Trump's skin since she became the Democratic standard-bearer, calling him "weird," a term Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, first wielded against the Republican."

As an impartial observer I actually find Tim Waltz with his over the top ear to ear grinning and "joy" outbursts to be pretty "weird". Looks like he is on a Red Bull drip, whats up with that? On the other side Trump's outbursts are pretty much what people expect of ..well, Trump.

create social media moments

How about creating an actual policy platform instead.

Good point, that.

No, you never answered it, but I'll just go on your previous posts where you said they were "crap"....

So you haven't FLIPPED like Trump...therefore, you believe Trump is a shameless, principle-less FLIP-FLOPPER when he NOW says EVs are fantastic...

Got it...

ABC News releases rules for presidential debate between Harris, Trump in Philadelphia

https://abc7chicago.com/post/abc-news-releases-rules-2024-presidential-debate-between-kamala-harris-donald-trump-philadelphia/15268377/

I doubt this debate will be an even playing field.

ABC has been unashamedly bias towards democrat/Harris/Biden.

However let wait and see.

Underworld, respectfully, Joe Biden, for at least the last eighteen months, would struggle to find the steering wheel. Let alone figure out which direction to steer.

The "weird" thing by the Dems is hilarious.

This is the party that their most ardent supporter say if a heterosexual man or a lesbian woman refuse to date a woman with a penis or a heterosexual woman or a gay man refuses to date a man with a vagina, then they are discriminating and transphobic.

Honestly the Reps don't have a monopoly on weird!

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Harris and the Democrats cannot attack Trump’s program as all polls show him well ahead on the economy, immigration, taxes, crime, and the principal concerns of foreign affairs, and he has effectively eliminated the former Democratic advantage on abortion. The only argument the Democrats have had against Trump since he was elected eight years ago has been their endless pompous claptrap about Trump as an aspiring dictator and a morally bankrupt personality.

It is also becoming uncommonly difficult for them to complain about the Trump agenda to make America great, when Ms. Harris is folding her tent in key policy areas one after the other and stealing through the undergrowth toward the Trump position.

To liberate herself from the encasement of her feet in electoral cement as she defends the regime of which she has been the co-leader, given that Trump leads in every major policy area, Ms. Harris has no choice but to deny what she has done and said, and try to cover her tracks with pieties about the constancy of her “values.” Those values appear to consist entirely in an unshakable determination to seek and hold high public office no matter what depths of hypocrisy and evasive casuistry are excavated.

As of now, the Democrats have fired all the ammunition they have, their candidate is afraid of serious public exposure, the attempt to make the election a referendum on Trump’s personality rather than the performance of Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris has failed, and there is no longer any reason to believe that the country is especially averse to Trump’s personality anyway. The Democrats will not win with a hollow candidate, tainted by the far left, and wallowing around in her pants-suit trying to exude “joy.”

Trump is a criminal, a rapist, and an all around bad person.

Everyone should trash him, everywhere.

And yet he has been able to effectively do his job - the most recent being the negotiations in the US - Russia prisoner exchange.

So this Marxist admin...

Hilarious. Continuing the radical American ignorance about Marxism, communism, socialism, leftism, liberalism. No wonder they are in deep doo-doo. I don't think they know their @r$e from their elbow.

Continuing the radical American ignorance about Marxism, communism, socialism

The other day I was saying, not entirely facetiously, that the typical "conservative" US-American couldn't explain the difference between Marxism, communism, and socialism to save their life. The reaction I got from such a conservative was, "Of course not, conservative Americans don't expect Marxism, communism, and socialism to save their life". I'm fairly certain one could write a complete dissertation dissecting that answer.
