When foreigners attend our great colleges & want to stay in the U.S., they should not be thrown out of our country.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Attending classes and socializing with international students made my university experiences much richer. US students will lose not having foreign students provide different perspectives.

The various science and engineering departments at most US schools where foreign students play huge roles will be especially hurt. As will the US economy. Foreign students and foreign workers have played huge roles in advancing US technology, a giant part of the engine powering the economy.

The US is rapidly becoming even more of a pariah state. Land, air and sea-locked: no one in, no one out. Stagnation ahead as American shuns progress and descends to becoming an authoritarian led banana republic.

They can go on Tik Tok.....

Don’t get me started on that. The best thing that Trump could do was put a freeze on the H1B visas that have been hurting Americans.

As will the US economy. Foreign students and foreign workers have played huge roles in advancing US technology, a giant part of the engine powering the economy.

Not in Silicon Valley, it’s enriched the tech companies and big businesses you always love to rail against, so if you’re pro-American, the last thing you want is for Americans to be cheated out of employment opportunities.

The US is rapidly becoming even more of a pariah state. Land, air and sea-locked: no one in, no one out.

You guys complain about the COVID-19, so in that case we should take all the preliminary precautions of who can come in and who can’t or certain Chinese organizations that should be banned from our college campuses.

Stagnation ahead as American shuns progress and descends to becoming an authoritarian led banana republic.

If the Dems get power, it will.

Trump can't even take his own college entrance test and then relies on his little ***** man Stephen Miller to concoct this BS. The man has never accomplished anything of substance in his entire life.

What most people don't realize is that a large contingent of international students didn't return to their home countries when universities shut down in March. They were put up in dorms and off campus housing to ensure they wouldn't be blocked from returning by our overlord Stephen Miller.  They're here now, and this new decree means they'd have to try and return to countries that have banned our populace...which is how the rest of the world views us thanks to the trump administration.

Kudos to Harvard and MIT, I hope they throw everything they have at this idiotic measure.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

if you’re pro-American, the last thing you want is for Americans to be cheated out of employment opportunities.

I hope you haven’t bought any trump neckties.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Why doesn’t trump just say “kick out the commie Chinese students”. That what it is really about.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

there were 2 statements

When foreigners attend our great colleges & want to stay in the U.S., they should not be thrown out of our country.

I want talented people to come into this country—to work hard and to become citizens. Silicon Valley needs engineers, etc.

So taken in context. this doesnt mean students. This means graduates who want to stay and work after they graduate, and who want to become US citizens, should be able to stay and work. Context matters.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Context matters? Now, that’s just plain dishonest. Those were 2 separate comments and you know it. The first tweet is about students. The second tweet was days later. Create your own context, facts will win every time.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

How will foreign students graduate US colleges if you kick them out now? Makes your second tweet seem pretty useless too.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

no, it was at the exact same time. Back in the day when Twitter had a character limit.

The second tweet was days later. Create your own context, facts will win every time.

same time, same date. now who is making their own context?

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-foreign-students-tweet/

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Ok you’re correct both tweets were the same day. So? Minor point. You read snopes, read it again. He wanted foreign students to stay. You are imagining he didn’t mean students.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

same day, same exact time. facts matter. context matters.

Ok you’re correct both tweets were the same day. So?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

students dont get jobs in Silicon Valley and stay and become citizens. Graduates do.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

So how are they going to graduate from US colleges now? Having trouble understanding that part.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Online classes, like many Americans also do.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Good that Harvard and MIT, institutions which turn out the future of this country are standing up to a racist, xenophobic president pandering to his uneducated base, still steeped in the past.

Education doesn't mean anything to the racists so not a surprise they back trump on this!!!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Online classes, like many Americans also do.

You haven’t really been following this news story have you?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

students dont get jobs in Silicon Valley and stay and become citizens. Graduates do.

I'll explain this a bit slowly.

Students....................graduate!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Yes I have. No in person classes. So if you can only take classes online, due to the choice of your college, need to leave the country.

so leave the country and take online classes. or the colleges can open up, nothing prevents the college from doing that.

if their schools operate entirely online this fall.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

colleges wanna virtue signal and politicize themselves, there are consequences for their students.

They decided this, so they hurt people. They also even said the class online costs just as much as the in person class. money hungry liberal colleges.

If its not safe enough to attend a college class for foreign students, how is it safe for them to continue to live in the USA? what will they be doing every day in the USA if they arent going to school?

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

It’s all academic (har!) anyway. It won’t happen or trump will change his mind again and you’ll have to find a new fantasy to justify his latest whimsy.

https://nypost.com/2020/07/08/uc-berkeley-students-plan-to-skirt-ice-rules-with-fake-course-for-foreign-classmates/

The plan, which would likely afoul of laws against immigration fraud if enacted, was reportedly hatched hours after ICE announced Monday that foreign students in the US are required to take some in-person instruction or they will not be allowed to legally remain in the country.

Of course liberals had to virtue signal and #resist and post their illegal plan online. oops.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

colleges wanna virtue signal and politicize themselves, there are consequences for their students.

Colleges want to educate and the only consequences for the students should be to receive a good education.

America has been known for it high standards in education and a good many international students have gained and contributed to the country because of it.

The racists stand against education, that is not a surprise .

2 ( +4 / -2 )

It makes no sense to blame Trump for this.

The colleges screwed their students. The resistance backfired as usual. thats it.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Colleges want to make money. Thats why the change to online classes didnt come with any decrease in the course fee for the foreign students. its a money grab gone wrong, thats why the colleges are upset.

Colleges want to educate and the only consequences for the students should be to receive a good education.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

If its not safe enough to attend a college class for foreign students, how is it safe for them to continue to live in the USA? what will they be doing every day in the USA if they arent going to school?

Absolutely bonkers....

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The bottom line is this. If you support trump you are the minority. At home, globally and on this site. That’s indisputable.

Whatever badges you want to assign, Democrat, Republican, Liberal or Conservative are a distraction. There are only 2 sides. One is common sense, intelligence and decency. The other is the opposite of that.

This sudden education immigration policy is against common sense, intelligence and decency.

We’ll put the last 4 years down as a failed experiment. You had your fun, wore some cute red hats, got riled up, felt like a team, snubbed your nose at them uppity folk. But playtimes over and it’s time for beddybyes.

If you’re unsure which of the 2 sides you fall in this site can be a microcosm if the big wide world and the up/down votes are a pretty useful barometer.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Good that Harvard and MIT, institutions which turn out the future of this country

Future what? Marxists? I guess so....

are standing up to a racist, xenophobic president pandering to his uneducated base, still steeped in the past.

Really? Why?

Education doesn't mean anything to the racists so not a surprise they back trump on this!!!

Funny, we are seeing what a 50k a year degree gets you, defunding the police, CHAP, abolish ICE, cancel anyone that disagrees with you, fire them, put foreign students ahead of American students, believe that socialism will work in America will work. Yeah, great education.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Colleges want to make money.

Is that bad? They do need to pay their employees, fund research......

The uneducated might not understand it, but colleges contribute to keeping all of us fed, healthy and safe.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

America's colleges and universities are one of our greatest "soft power" agents for furthering our national interests, and those of our democratic allies, worldwide...

Students from countries that limit freedom, human rights, free speech, experience all of those while here in America, then go home and ask hard questions why they can't have those same freedoms there. They may start democratic movements and become leaders in political change.

Trump of course, doesn't comprehend any of that and just sees it another divisive wedge issue that he can trumpet to his rage-filled, foreign-hating base and leverage for his failing re-election hopes...

And speaking of foreigners, did you see that Trump and the Mexican President met today - and Trump never once brought up "Mexico will pay for the wall"?

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-mexico-immigration/trump-mexicos-president-briefly-discussed-immigration-white-house-idUSKBN24936G

When Trump says "mark my words, mark my words", he means it. That meaning being "I'm lying my #$% off"....

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The uneducated might not understand it, but colleges contribute to keeping all of us fed, healthy and safe.

Not surprising Trump and his far right handlers haven't thought this through.

Those among their 'poorly educated' must think there are enough Ken and Karens who'll make it through medical school and/or become nurses and medical technicians to make up for the shortages the US is facing, and who'll replace the huge percent of those who are foreign born.

They must think there are enough Kens and Karens who'll get an advanced degree in a scientific or technical field to keep US business competitive with China and the rest of the world.

But on that, too they're wrong. Cut back foreign talent and the US economy stagnates. Which is what the anti-progressive, back to the whenever-America-might-have-been-'great' Trump followers seem to want.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

victims of the decisions of their activist colleges.

Do you think there is no liberal political activism involved in these few colleges already deciding now to cancel classes in the fall?

Or do we just say student visa, you dont need to be a student. Work visa, you dont need to work. Spouse visa, single people can have it. Just everyone do whatever they want, live anywhere, do anything.

hopefully the normal classes will resume at some point.

For whatever reason the students are victims.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

more like soft target.

America's colleges and universities are one of our greatest "soft power" agents for furthering our national interests, and those of our democratic allies, worldwide...

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/china/american-universities-are-soft-target-china-s-spies-say-u-n1104291

American universities are a soft target for China's spies, say U.S. intelligence officials

University of Texas professor Bo Mao is the latest defendant in a string of U.S. criminal cases alleging Chinese spying in the academic world.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

ICE should be deemed a terrorist organisation.

In the meantime, education has never been more important, especially when there are actually people out there who believe that graduates of these colleges are Marxist.

In the 50s and 60s, they called Civil Rights activists "communists".

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Mary Trump's claim Trump paid Joe Shapiro to take SATs conflicts with timeline, Shapiro's wife says.

Trump was already at the University of Pennsylvania when he met Shapiro, according to the new video.

Maybe because Trump cheated with his uni entry stats?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

War on drugs failed, war on terrorism failed, next the war on education.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Do you think there is no liberal political activism involved in these few colleges already deciding now to cancel classes in the fall?

Of course there is, what’s the problem? Why so scared?

Or do we just say student visa, you dont need to be a student.

Got anything to back that up or just paranoia? Why do you think students are not studying?

Face it, you just want them all to go back where they came from, don’t try to dress it up.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The international students could be expelled from US if the online study ruling is not observed.

Such measure is counter-productive, unfair and highhanded. Would the admin think again?..

0 ( +2 / -2 )

liberals will believe anything that someone wanting to get paid writes down in a book or a dossier, without evidence

The far right will post any opinion as fact, without evidence to back it up.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Trump was already at the University of Pennsylvania when he met Shapiro, according to the new video.

New video? Another produced/altered by a White House employee (on the taxpayer's payroll), another malicious deep fake?

Trump might have credibility with his followers (fractals, after all) but zero with the majority of the country. Leopards and spots; genomically unable to deal with what most people know is true.

American universities are a soft target for China's spies, say U.S. intelligence officials

Reds under the beds!

You seem to pick and chose when to listen to U.S. intelligence officials and when to ignore the ‘experts’ and their ‘agendas’

2 ( +4 / -2 )

see my evidence above. backed up.

The far right will post any opinion as fact, without evidence to back it up.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Where are the Marxists in this group?

The alt right aren't talking to you. They write for their audience, the 'poorly educated', many of whom have come to understand words like fascist, Marxist, socialist, etc. might have bad connotations to some. They use these words to name-call without understanding what they actually mean. They join terms like witch hunt, hoax, deep state, the media, etc.. Parrots, after all.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

so you dont believe your intelligence agencies now? They say Chinese spies are infiltrating our educational systems and there have been arrests and convictions. Fake news?

You seem to pick and chose when to listen to U.S. intelligence officials and when to ignore the ‘experts’ and their ‘agendas’

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

The far right will post any opinion as fact, without evidence to back it up.

Liberals live in a world of opinions that they claim are facts.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Joe Biden claims all 3 are. Including those fine people who display the Confederate flag.

Trump thinks 2 of those 3 are "very fine people"...

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Most likely Trump is trying to force universities to have in person classes in his push to reopen. Open or lose the revenue from foreign students.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Most likely Trump is trying to force universities to have in person classes in his push to reopen. Open or lose the revenue from foreign students.

Strange hypothesis......

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

It makes sense when you look at his desire to go against the experts and have K-8 open. This is just the higher level part.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Most likely Trump is trying to force universities to have in person classes in his push to reopen. Open or lose the revenue from foreign students.

Strange hypothesis......

It sounds plausible to me. What’s wrong with it? I’m must have the facts to hand to shoot it down.

It surely can’t be a partisan comment dashed off without thinking, can it?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Forcing the students to leave hurts us, and I'm struggling to find any logical justification for absorbing the loss. Something else is a in play here.

Agree 100%.....IF they wanr to stay in the U.S.

Bass:. No, it hurts these rip-off institutions.

That's not any kind of justification. These are some of the top rated universities in the world. And part of that that includes the students they attract.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

One wonders if Trump would have issued this policy if Trump University was still open... Sure he would have, right?

Well, we can only guess - because Trump U was a failure and shuttered in 2010. And several years later a judge ruled in a suit that it was a sham, and awarded former students $25 million, saying; “victims of Donald Trump’s fraudulent university will finally receive the relief they deserve.”

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/04/10/trump-university-settlement-judge-finalized/502387002/

Fraudulent - as in scam, con-job, flim-flam...

Pretty much sums up Trump, doesn't it...

Trump said, 'MIT? Romney owns a school??'

Trump has no idea about education and how elite minds, foreign and US, work together to enhance studies at top universities. Dumb Donald Drivel is getting draining the swamp, his silly promise, mixed up with this brain drain for the United States now and for the future. He has no foresight to realize how lessening the opportunity to have the best minds in the world in America is a stupid thing to do. No irony, there, folks.
