Stupid right wingers are gonna cry Fake News!

Nothing to do with left/right wing nor 'fake news'. Pics like this one or of the little boy 'crying in a cage' reek of political opportunism and do a disservice to the cause of undocumented migrants who are sometimes victims of unfair/inhumane treatment at us border.

Many of us (on both sides) like/want fair and 'reasonably' unbiased news. Taking pics out of context is imo even worse than fake news; it insults our intelligence & discernment.

The woman and child crossed the Rio Grande into Texas on a raft. The father, still with 2 other kids back in Honduras, believes she did it looking for economic opportunity.

THIS is exactly the sort of illegal immigrant, violating US borders, that makes law abiding immigrants pissed.

Not only should she be deported, but she should have her fingerprints added to a permanently blocked US immigration and work permit list.

@goldorak

Well put. I’d just add that it also furthers the cause of nutjob conspiracy theorists and their often odious and generally insane spokespeople.

Really poor show from Time.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Please show some of these examples, particularly the $18 million one.

Like I said, I heard it on the radio but here is the first article I found that mentions it. There are plenty of discussions about the photos misuse and it is very easy to find.

https://m.mysanantonio.com/news/article/The-crying-Honduran-girl-on-the-cover-of-Time-was-13016541.php

6 ( +7 / -1 )

And Time originally did state that the little girl on their cover photo was taken from her mother. At least they bothered to print a correction.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

This photo was also used to raise 18 million dollars. It is all over the news here in the US.

Anyone ok with the use of this photo as an example of children being taken from their parents must also be ok with cops planting evidence to get an arrest and witnesses lying on the stand to get convictions. It’s no different and you are no better than those you claim to be fighting against. You should be ashamed.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

'Time' published a fake cover photo to sell a story. Knowingly. That's what publishers have to do, sometimes, in order to sell copies. In this case, the person at 'Time' made the decision to publish the photo based on his politics, as much as his need to sell copies.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

What a stupid mistake by Time. They could have used thousands of other children who were separated, and they chose the wrong one. Now Republicans will pounce on it being the wrong child and ignore the thousands of others who are in fact very real.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

It's really sad the support for misleading journalism when it suits someone's narrative. I guess integrity is a rare commodity these days.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

@extanker. I cannot understand why your post at 7:10am was down voted. I agree that so called "fake news" on both sides is abhorrent. I guess those that down voted your post think fake news is OK as long as it supports their agenda.

Time and the photographer has defended this photo now saying they are trying to make a point. The interview with the child's father (published by a UK publication as the US media - both faux news and NBC/ABC, etc. are no longer reliable) is interesting and I think it should be read by all that have an interest on this issue. (One thing about the Brits - you guys still have a media at least.)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5869829/Father-two-year-old-face-child-separation-crisis-speaks-out.html

I am quite liberal (maybe not by the standards of this website or these modern times) however my thoughts on illegal immigration are that the families should be reunited (and never should be separated) but repatriated to their country of origin. If there is a legitimate case for asylum, by all means offer it. If there is not a legitimate case then people should apply to immigrate to the U.S. as others do. If it is too difficult to apply then the U.S. can consider making the process easier.

The soon to be leader of Mexico has some pretty radical thoughts on immigration. His is that the U.S. should be flooded with immigrants. I have provided the English source (relatively right of center) and the Spanish source (yes I speak Spanish so I can read it) which is not at all right of center.

http://dailycaller.com/2018/06/22/mexican-candidate-immigration-speech/

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/elecciones-2018/amlo-urge-epn-detener-actos-racistas-e-inhumanas-de-eu-migrantes

The countries south of the U.S. border should take more responsibility to bring up the standard of living for their citizens, but they are just as corrupt as Trump and the U.S. system and do not want to do so. Thus they use the U.S. as a safety valve. And yes, it is true some U.S. businesses are exploiting this cheap labor.

If we drive into nearly any inner city in the U.S. nowadays we can see abject poverty. The U.S. should focus more effort on ending this poverty in the inner cities (including the conditions allowed to exist that make it so hard for the urban black population to succeed).

@strangerland

Usually I find you to be fairly informed even though I usually disagree with you. This time I don’t know why you refuse to even listen to facts stated in the actual article above that we are discussing. This photo was not just used as part of the Time Magazine cover, it has been used in multiple places in the US media as an example of children being taken from their parents, unedited. On my drive home from work tonight, it was on the news as having been used as part of a charity to raise money to fight prosecuting illegal immigrants. Thats 18 million dollars raised using a deliberalty misrepresented photo. Good cause or not, that is fraud. It was deliberately stated it was a child being taken from her mother.

This is dishonesty in the media and I cannot understand how anyone would be ok with that.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

@strangerland

The article I posted specifically mentions the Facebook charity that used the photo to raise 18 million dollars. Did you even read it? Have you even read the article we are discussing? It’s like you are all in denial that the media would do anything wrong in its attacks on Trump. This is why Trump and his supporters yell ‘fake news’. Sometimes it’s actually true.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

No one with knowledge of the incident claimed that the girl had been separated from her mother. John Moore, the photographer, clearly stated that the girl began crying when her mother, to comply with a pat-down order, set her on the ground. The girl was traumatized and fearful. Moore stated that after being frisked the mother again picked the girl up, and the two of them walked into a police van. Moore did say he feared that they might be separated later, but he accurately reported the details of what he photographed.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Wow, man, I guess I was wrong about you. I must say I’m disappointed.

It has been openly claimed in the press and elsewhere that the little Honduran girl crying in the photo had been taken from her mother.

Since then, it has been acknowledged by the child’s father, the border patrol officer involved and the media that the child was never taken from her mother and only had been asked to put her down for a few minutes. The mother acknowledges she is only crying because it’s late and she’s hungry. The mother and child are still together at this moment

There is no excuse. This is 100% dishonesty in the media and actual, undeniable ‘fake news’. Everyone here defending it is giving their approval for the media to twist the truth to push whatever agenda they want.

I don’t care if it’s Fox News or CNN, a lie is a lie. It seems the media has actually admitted it in this case, but none of you can.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

It was not immediately clear how the error occurred.

Probably because there was no error. Cropping the image of the girl out of the original photo (which showed her standing next to her mother) then photoshopping it onto a lurid red background with a stern faced Trump towering menacingly over her, was an intentional act. It was obviously created with the intent to demonize Trump and US border policy. At the very least this cover is a photojournalistic op-ed piece, at worst it is propaganda.

The original picture did a very good job at capturing the feeling of despair that many families are experiencing, it would have been an iconic image all on its own. But Time decided to literally separate this baby from her mother by removing her from the reality of the captured moment and exploiting her as a prop for what the editors refer to as a "photo illustration". The subject of the cover was Trump, the intent was to portray him as an evil heartless bully and the girl was just a prop to support Time magazine's attempt to remain relevant.

This is straight up exploitation for gain and is clearly insensitive to the child's actual circumstances now and in the future. Already the Time cover has become the source of a flood of memes where the creators add their own political spin to it or use it as the basis for a joke. Just adding another layer of dehumanizing, self serving exploitation on the pile that Time magazine started.

It looks like a runaway confirmation bias doesn't care who it runs over, once its on a roll.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

So, you’re saying Japan Today is “stupid right winger”? LOL we aren’t surprised the liberal media had to use more fake news for this manufactured controversy.

What??? Now that’s news! Look, all of this contrived BS that the kids were suffering, the tours of these facilities proved the exact opposite.

Support for America interning its own actual citizens during the Pacific War was hugely popular. Hardly surprising there's support for this latest incarnation of inhumanity.

If the children were getting bread and water and sleeping naked on the floor while the guards beat and kick them, you may have a point, this is not what is happening, not even remotely close. They are not being abused or anything like that. You don’t have a right to wander into any country. The MSM have been so irresponsible and grossly over exaggerating this situation and we all know why.

Is the cover staged? Of course it is: the kid didn't actually confront a bemused Trump. That would be just adding to the very real trauma.

Time knew that was a gross lie, but they don’t want to change the cover. But I understand why TIME is doing it. They really are in a jam.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

It doesn't appear that any misleading was done anywhere with this photo, so what exactly are you calling 'misleading'? Did someone report that this girl was separated from her mother?

I agree but who's doing it here?

The photo has been distributed to reporters as an example of children being separated from their parents. It's actually stated in the article above. The photographer only came forward to comment on his photo after it had already been misused.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

This particular case is not the fault of the mother and her daughter. She didn't make the reports or take the photo. But the case does highlight the 2,000 plus children who have been separated.

No it does not. It is a photo of a little girl crying because her mother put her down. It would be no different than if I took a picture of my niece crying.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Yeah, looking at that, it does seem to give the impression that the girl in the picture has been separated from her parents. That's an irresponsible usage of that image by the owner of a facebook group.

The Washington Post was sloppy as well. It's not something a real news organization should be doing.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Stupid right wingers are gonna cry Fake News!

Well, it kinda is fake news in this case. Just like the picture of the child crying in the cage.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/18/us/photo-migrant-child-cage-trnd/index.html

Every time something like happens, it gives credence to the people yelling 'fake news' because that is exactly what it is. Laugh about 'stupid right wingers' all you want, but there is nothing funny about dishonest media, on either side.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

This article has the link to the Facebook campaign that used this picture as an example of children separated from their parents.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2018/06/18/facebook-campaign-raising-millions-reunite-immigrants-children/712502002/

the campaign is called REUNITE an immigrant parent with their child.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

And the time cover was for an article that claimed the child had been separated.

washington post got caught trying to change their article about it without telling anyone.

http://amp.dailycaller.com/2018/06/22/washington-post-hides-time-correction/?__twitter_impression=true

0 ( +3 / -3 )

The media efforts on this issue have been very sloppy. Total emotional blackmail using evidence that is later found to be misleading at best.

Um, there are thousands and thousands of media outlets out there. You don't get to paint the entire media as sloppy due to the owner of a facebook group misappropriating the image, a newspaper trying to cover up misreporting, and a celebrity tweeting it out incorrectly.

I know in your binary world, when one group does something you don't like, it means that every group you don't like is guilty of that one wrong thing. But for those of us who live in the nuance real-world, your logic just doesn't stand.

Hungry has become a rightwing fascist state and not need or wanted in Europe.

So now what will happen with “Hungary” is that correct?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Extanker, right on all points.

and btw, good for Hungary!

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Stupid right wingers are gonna cry Fake News! 'Cause they actually think keeping that image and those tapes in the public eye is a winner for them.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

Don't worry, far right folks. The kid is still being detained. With the mother.

You can still pretend that over 2000 kids aren't being traumatised and abused.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Time has done poorly here, and there were already people on the left criticizing Time's use of this photo days ago.

But posters desperate to fluff their Don will no doubt proclaim that all news that doesn't reflect what they want is fake, even though apart from Time, no news source actually claimed anything false about the picture that I know of.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

On Friday, Time published a correction saying: "The original version of this story misstated what happened to the girl in the photo after she (was) taken from the scene. The girl was not carried away screaming by U.S. Border Patrol agents; her mother picked her up and the two were taken away together."

thats such an entirely different story that it almost sounds intentionally so.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

What a stupid mistake by Time. They could have used thousands of other children who were separated, and they chose the wrong one.

Oh, darn it! They could’ve used kids American kids to make the same point, but naaaah, that would undercut the liberals narrative.

Now Republicans will pounce on it being the wrong child and ignore the thousands of others who are in fact very real.

Do we have to ignore the American kids as well or the ones in Europe, how about in Africa? Lot of kids separated kid there. Because I know liberals care about everyone.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

the EU will have to decide how to deal with a country breaking its own laws and regulations including open border and the free flow of people not being confront by a border fence.

From the way Europe has been devolving, they might get a medal.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Well, it kinda is fake news in this case

No, it is not. Over 2,400 children have been taken from their parents. Illegally and immorally.

If Repubs want to die on that hill, be my guest.

As for the right wingers suddenly caring about scientific accuracy in reporting, I am touched, truly, touched, by their dedication to the free press, the truth and patriotism.

Oh, wait....

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Time and its disgusting fake misrepresentation.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Like I said, I heard it on the radio but here is the first article I found that mentions it. There are plenty of discussions about the photos misuse and it is very easy to find.

Unfortunately the article you posted only mentions that it was misused, it does not show how it was misused or explain what the misuse was. I can believe it has been misused, it would not surprise me at all, but as of yet I haven't seen any examples of it. All I've seen so far is the Time magazine cover, which didn't make any claims whatsoever, it was simply a witty image. If I had not known it was actually a girl coming through immigration, I would have just assumed it was a stock photo or something. The only text given for the image at all is 'welcome to America', under which, this girl's situation applies.

And Time originally did state that the little girl on their cover photo was taken from her mother. At least they bothered to print a correction.

I don't think there is any 'at least' about it. The media will make mistakes, even when endeavoring to be as accurate as possible. When that happens, printing a correction is the baseline. And Time Magazine seems to have a good history of correcting themselves when they need to. This is the mark of a healthy media.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I read both the article we’re discussing, as well as the article you linked. But articles are filtered through the viewpoint of the writer, which is why I want to see the source. What originally sounded pretty bad to me didn’t look bad when I saw the time cover. On the contrary I thought it was pretty intelligent. That it was used by a Facebook group does not by default mean it was used incorrectly. I want to see how it was actually used before making judgement.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

It has been openly claimed in the press and elsewhere that the little Honduran girl crying in the photo had been taken from her mother.

But I still haven't actually seen it being openly claimed. I've only seen claims that it was openly claimed. I would like to see it being misused, not just reports that it was misused. In this day of fake news, we also have to be weary of fake reports of fake news.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Remember, I'm the only one in this thread that actually produced a link to the image being used at all.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The media efforts on this issue have been very sloppy. Total emotional blackmail using evidence that is later found to be misleading at best.

Pic of a child in a cage was staged at a protest. This child wasn’t separated and her mom had been previously arrested for illegally entering the USA. Cage pics were 2014. Physical Abuses were in 2014 but linked to Trump. ACLU report was 2009-2014. Just fuels the “fake news” cries and helps Trump when the media is caught being dishonest.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Time and its disgusting fake misrepresentation.

Time did misrepresent the image initially within the article, and did the thing that healthy media outlets do, and issued a correction.

The usage of the image on the cover however is not misrepresentation at all.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Matt Taibbi: "I basically say this - many Americans will support even the most vicious immigration laws, so long as they don’t have to look at the damage. The operating principle is out of sight, out of mind."

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Ah yes. That would be the thinly-veiled intimidation of those who help asylum seekers.

Good on Hungary, that’s all I can say. Great job!

It's not just the US that demonises and treats immigrants like dirt. Bigotry is in the ascendent.

And yet, liberals can make outrageous lies like this one, spew it all over TV with impunity.

Laws are created to tramp them down. And some applaud it.

Terms are knowingly used to stoke the hatred.

Enforcing the law is now hateful?

Just like the 30s. Where does it end? How many must be incarcerated, traumatised and worse

Depends on the crime.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

So, you’re saying Japan Today is “stupid right winger”? LOL we aren’t surprised the liberal media had to use more fake news for this manufactured controversy.

I agree but who's doing it here?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Watched Moore’s interview. He said they were briefly seperated while she was questioned then the mother and child were taken away in a van together. The child will spend her formative time in prison.

@toasted is right. Even if not separated thousands of others are. Fact.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I believe this is the cover in question: https://goo.gl/images/v4rk1J

There are literally no claims made about the girl, much less anything about separation.

It's actually a great cover now that I look at it.

'Time' published a fake cover photo to sell a story.

You obviously haven't even looked at the photo.
