It's easy to win when you arrest all the opposition.
Despotism painted up as patriotism is the second oldest profession in the world.

Don't confuse patriotism with doing what the current people in power mandate by force. Patriotism has nothing do to with following a dictator or being told what to do to "save face."
Patriotism is protesting against bad govt decisions. Those protests can come in many forms, even just banging on a pot from your balcony is a protest and patriotic. It is a way to tell the govt they should do better and that you expect them to do better.

I disagree. While it would be painful to disconnect from China in the short term, I think it would provide long-term benefits to the West by bringing some jobs back home and investing in other countries where their economic and political systems are less repulsive.
To say that China doesn't need the rest of the world is nonsense - the rest of the world being foolishly accommodating to the CCP has enabled it to become the monster it is now. Kissinger and Brzezinski have a lot to answer for here. Of course nowhere is perfect, but China is not the only choice when it comes to manufacturing and natural resources, even rare-earth metals. Africa and Australia have untapped supplies, but they won't be as cheap because China isn't to concerned about the environmental aspect when extracting them.
I can't predict how long the Russia-Ukraine quagmire will last, but the world will adapt as it has before. Russia will be tolerated again if it behaves and dumps Putin, but we're in for a rough ride in the meantime.

Odd thing to say because it implies she's not a patriot, or less of a patriot than John Lee.
In any case, it's no win. It must be shameful to be John Lee, to win an election where he's the only candidate running. All those Election Committee votes, LOL, as if they can vote for anyone else.

Patriots? But only 1 "patriot" was up for election.

Chinese people love their leaders because it's what in the script. No one can ever definitively analyze the relationship between the CCP and Chinese people, because it's controlled by the CCP. There is no free thought, there is no ideas, there is no self expression. Even outside their countries they are being followed by CCP operatives.
China's rising economy owed much to Taiwanese who invested on the mainland, American trade favouritism (MFN), ascension onto the WTO, American supply chain located in China. Then there's countries like Australia that has steadfastedly (until recent times) prioritises resources export to China.
HK was once a leading financial centre, but its status is now questioned, because of the CCP. That is as direct a relationship as you can get.
John Lee is known as a shameless script follower, he has no ideas, happy to read from a script written in Beijing and keeping to himself. The guy (actually he's more like a weasel) has no shame in standing for election being the only candidate, LOL. Imagine telling that to your grand kids...

'Patriotism', a word twisted up horribly Orwellian claptrap. And now the CCP has their puppet governing HK.

@ Rodney- the Chinese people love their leadership because to say otherwise is fraught with danger.

Most posters here have absolutely no connection to HK. Sorry but HK is for HKers. The government isn't there to please the west. Good to see no more rioting or people being set on fire. The elderly can now go out on the streets feeling safe. You want to experience that then go to USA.
HK does have problems like every other place on earth, but they're working on them. Housing is one, but that's hardly the same as poverty, lack of free healthcare or rampant crime, like you see in USA.

Bwa ha ha. So true, right? Get rid of the petrol dollar. It's obscene how transactions between two non-American countries have to be done in dollar. Hopefully those days are coming to an end.

Carrie Lam sez, Carrie Lam sez, Carrie Lam sez...
Oh can it, you CCP stooge. you are nothing but a mouthpiece and a puppet for chairman Xi and it's written all over your face, How can you even stand yourself, selling yourself and your fellow HKers like you have? Shame!
starpunk
Please look at my earlier postings. John Lee is a puppet for the CCP. he sez what he's told to say, nothing more. He answers to chairman Xi. He has no soul, no respect even for himself. He's a sellout.
He's working for the clampdown now, as the Clash once put it.

Time to isolate China from the rest of the world until the CCP falls. They can do it to Russia, why not China?
Joemusic1980
The ruble is $.14 (14 cents) to the dollar. That’s soaring??? Let me know when it’s equal to the dollar.

Good news, it has obviously been a pretty volatile few years for Hong Kong but some much needed stability and consistency should help. Obviously their first challenge is getting the Covid situation under control, as it has been able to run unchecked a lot more there.
Of course, we have to see how things pan out under Lee, but initially optimistic. He has a lot on his plate to try to fix, I don't envy his position.
@Algernon LaCroix
It hasn't worked that well with Russia, the ruble is soaring and Europe is suffering more from the sanctions. With China it would be even worse, China doesn't need them at all but basically every country needs China desperately. Both at the same time would be economic suicide for the west. Especially when it comes to rare-earth metals that can't just be easily acquired from an alternative source.
Rodney
@Yrral. Chinese people love their leaders because they have risen China to almost the worlds number one economy, and their leaders don’t beat about the bush…telling lies, just say the truth. Name one western leader who you can trust the words that come out of their mouths? Biden laptop, Partygate?
